24.01.2022 February’s woodland bird of the month is the Painted Button Quail. Feeding on insects by doing the twist to search for insects, this bird is often noticed by ...the impressions left in the dirt, rather than seeing the bird itself. A Woodland Bird Conservation Action Plan has identified 50 woodland birds in decline across the east coast of Australia. Birds are important indicators of landscape health, and provide a myriad of landscape function and ecosystem service. And they are beautiful too! Help the declining Painted Button Quail by retaining leaf litter and debris, and controlling foxes or wild pig on your land. Quail are are nature’s own bug controllers! You can also monitor woodland birds at your place using the mobile Birdata App. Learn more about this amazing bird, go to: https://birdlife.org.au/bird-profile/painted-button-quail #woodlandbirds #nlp #landcare

04.01.2022 The Central West region is home to many threatened native fish species in our beautiful waterways. Keeping our rivers and creeks in good condition is critical t...o the survival of our native fish. Here are some ways you can help: Retain vegetation along the waterways - this helps to provide a food source and shelter for many species, and the shading provided from tree cover helps to keep water temperatures within a healthy range. Don’t remove fallen logs of branches from waterways. Fish and other aquatic animals need this for shelter or to attach eggs to. Remove exotic fish species such as European Carp, Eastern Gambusia and Redfin Perch. These fish can destroy habitat, prey on threatened fish species and provide competition for food sources for native fish. If you do think you have spotted a threatened fish species, you can report it to DPI Fisheries at https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fis/species-protection/report-it
