25.01.2022 Yeah I know I say it ALL the time, but c'mon, this truly is the best place on earth! Dark brooding sky, stunning vistas and sights that make you audibly draw breath... Unquestionably, I'm in the Derwent Valley This shot I took today, looking over Lake Gordon. My favourite road trip ever!

24.01.2022 Looking forward to chatting tourism and catching up with so many industry people celebrating small wins for a tough year. If you're in Hobart grab your ticket now and come say hi. Will be an awesome breakfast.

23.01.2022 Fresh falls of snow overnight with more due tonight. Awesome way to start the school holidays!!! See you for a SNOW WEEKEND!! As always we love be the work of the Southern Tasmania Ski Association who provide these webcam images so we can see what the mountain is doing

22.01.2022 In a topsy turvy world this is one constant I welcome. APT Travel Ltd and AAT Kings - Australia have always heralded the start and the end of our peak tourism seasons. The drivers and guides are like family to us here at Waterfalls Cafe. With the return of our first bus, the excitement in my team is back. A little slice of normality to finish the year.

22.01.2022 Winter weekend special! Curried sausages served with rice and sour cream. $12.50 This dish was a massive take-away hit during our Covid shutdown last year, so it will also be available as a take-away (frozen) without the sour cream. ... #tassieoffseason

21.01.2022 It's that time of year!! We are open every day except Christmas Day (first year ever I get the day off!!) Full kitchen service, awesome coffee and fantastic local creations from the gallery all await you every other day. Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all very soon

21.01.2022 It's SPEAK UP Stay ChatTY Shorts Day!! Brave the cold, brave the conversation to support mental health. Brave the cold... It was -1 and is currently 4 degrees... The socks may be pulled up as the day goes on!! My tourism industry, and I, have faced a long tough road with the 2019 bushfires and covid taking its toll in an industry that is tough at the best of times to continue to smile through. If it wasn't for my family, my friends and laughing through it all with my team, ...I don't think I'd still be doing this today. The conversation is what helps, to get it out and to support each other is what gets us through. Start the conversation... (Disclaimer: sorry for blinding you with my "don't see sun ever" white legs ) Tourism Industry Council Tasmania Destination Southern Tasmania

21.01.2022 ROAD UPDATE: Lake Dobson road is open to 4wd and 2wd FITTED with chains. Drive safety and to conditions.

21.01.2022 Wow, just wow! Check out that blue sky!! Tassie weather never ceases to amaze me. Love it

21.01.2022 Proud day for Mt Field National Park (and me) as Junior Discovery Ranger Jasmine Power (yep, my daughter) has just been announced as a finalist for the Tourism, Arts and Heritage category in the 2020 Tasmanian Volunteer Awards. Living in Mt Field since she was 9, Jasmine has attended every Discovery Ranger activity held in Mt Field each summer. Recognising Jasmine's passion (and encyclopaedia type knowledge of random facts and puns) she was given the role of the first Junio...r Discovery Ranger in 2018, hopefully paving the way for other passionate youngsters and starting off her dream career of being a Park Ranger. Now 17, Jasmine is hoping that the Discovery Ranger Program for Mt Field will continue in light of current events so she can share her passion, love and knowledge (and very funny puns) of Tasmania's most diverse National Park. A huge congratulations to Jasmine, and to Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service for having such an amazing and engaging program and creating this role for such a passionate young lady. Now, for the awards night (PS: she was also recognised for her volunteer work as stage manager for end of year dance school events)

20.01.2022 Woohoo... The berries are coming!! Now what new creations can we come up with

20.01.2022 Hmm, what's this? Something new is happening... Can't wait to show you what we're doing! Change is as good as a holiday... That phrase has taken on new meaning these last few months

18.01.2022 What's the deal with no cash? I'm glad you (nicely) asked. When we first reopened the cafe in June we accepted cash. Very quickly we noticed that fewer than 5% of our customers paid cash. We also noticed how much our hands excruciatingly hurt from the amount of handwashing/sanitising that our jobs now required. The move to card payments only (made months ago) saves more time than you realise, leading to much more efficient service in an environment where we don't have the sp...ace for queuing. It saves our hands enough to make it through yet another shift. When we looked at the economics of not accepting cash, it means no till reconciliation, holding of cash on premisis and the two hours it takes just to get change. Not accepting cash saves us more than $300 per week. At a time where every cent counts, that is an amount that can mean the difference between our doors open or closed. Now my personal story - in the time since we reopened I noticed a spot on the back of my hand change, become raised and become a concern. While I cannot say it was from the affects of the handwashing and sanitising I do know that my hands have suffered tremendously, to the point even warm water is agony. Last week I had my spot removed and confirmed it was a skin cancer. We are doing our best at a very difficult time, making the decisions required to stay in business. Our decision to not accept cash IS NOT PERMANENT. This situation is monitored daily, as is every decision we have to make along this rollercoaster ride that is 2020. Thank you to all our understanding, loyal and downright awesome customers who are keeping the smiles on our faces. For all our mainland and international friends we can't wait to see you all as soon as possible.

17.01.2022 Time to escape the rat race, embrace the digital disconnect and breathe... Or as we say, #ComeDownForAir Weekend goals... Mt Wedge overlooking the Sentinel Range and Lake Pedder. With stunning weather today Greg took the trek. Roughly 5 hours but views for days

17.01.2022 Merry Christmas from our team to yours.

16.01.2022 Tough job... someone has to taste test all our new products Seriously though, we have some of the most awesome creations from our Valley and beyond... Valkyrie from The Eleventh Order Brewery (brewed with raspberry) the new Spreyton Cider Co Young Sturmer and the most exclusive of the three, Honey Lager from Grumpy Bee (won't find this one elsewhere). Lots more products from these creators available now too. Perfect long afternoons in the Park taste testing something new...... Why not pop in and grab a few for Christmas celebrations or to take back to camp with you (takeaway available). A tasty way to support local! Did I mention I have the best job in the world?

14.01.2022 Greg went for a paddle this morning with Cameron from Derwent Valley SUP School. How stunning is the Derwent this morning. Little did Greg know he would turn into a paddling advertisment... Love you're work Cameron Not only is there so much fun for a visitor here, we absolutely love living here. So many great adventures to be had. Best place on earth.

14.01.2022 A little Flash Back for you to a wonderful event and media coverage that really shone a light on Mt Field Fungi. On this day in 2017 we ended up with 3 news stations and one took us National. A few weeks later while talking fungi with a gentleman from SA he remarked "now I know why you look familiar, I saw you on the news. You're the reason I'm standing here today." Mt Field is so much more than a waterfall, it is a truly enchanting place. Not only am I lucky to share my backyard with you, I'm the luckiest person in the world to do what I love so so much every single day... So who's coming fungi hunting this weekend

12.01.2022 I really wasn't sure if I'd be making this post this year. I'm so excited I am though!!! Time to ask some new team members to come on board for the season. We have various positions for the right people ready to work SO HURRY UP ALREADY!! Please email resumes to [email protected] or even better drop them in personally if you want to be in the front of the pack. Skills not necessary, our philosophy is to employ the right attitude, we can teach you everything else yo...u need. Be fast, early bird catches the worm

12.01.2022 And the snow is falling! Woohoo

11.01.2022 I've been challenging the team to come up with some new offerings lately and the results have been very, very yummy!! This weekend on the specials board we've got chicken curry, pulled pork rolls with apple slaw. In the heated display Ange has had some fun and discovered one of the tastiest tarts ever! 04.01.2022 Take a closer look! The added joy of hunting for our tiny native orchids is spotting the other tiny gems of the forest.

04.01.2022 Oohhh yeah... The best part of stocking local producers is getting all the new stuff when it comes in stock!! Gotta say, if you haven't tried Plenty Cider you are missing out but this new creation is A-Mazing! I know what I'll be drinking for Christmas, why not pop in and try some too (available for dine in or "souvenir" purchase)
