23.01.2022 Its late afternoon. The front seems to have passed. And the sun is out again. And another, small but perfectly formed, cruise ship is in Port. Albatros, yes, A...lbatros, with just one s. Not sure what thats all about. But someone will, we hope. Maybe its how they spell it in the Bahamas whose flag she sails under, or in Norway where shes spent a lot of her earlier life? See more

15.01.2022 #flashbackfriday - With the arrival of Cunards Queen Mary 2 (149,215 gt) at Fremantle on Tuesday 18 February, we hark back 77 years ago to the same date, 18 Fe...bruary 1943, when the convoy carrying the returning Australian 9th Division arrived at Fremantle from the Middle East. The convoy operation, designated Operation Pamphlet, included the first Queen Mary (81,237 gt) together with Aquitania (45,646 gt), Ile de France (43,450 gt), Nieuw Amsterdam (36,667 gt) and Queen of Bermuda (22,575 gt) together with escorting warships. The five troopships were carrying a total of 31,451 service personnel, 9,995 of whom were onboard Queen Mary. In October 1942, the Australian Government had requested the 9th Division, which had fought with notable distinction in the Western Desert, including Tobruk and El Alamein, be released from service in the Middle East and return to Australia to bolster forces for offensive operations against the Japanese in New Guinea. These were dark days for Australia. Singapore had fallen in February 1942 and between February 1942 and November 1943 the Australian mainland, including Darwin, Broome, Port Hedland, Townsville, Exmouth Gulf, Wyndham, offshore islands and coastal shipping had been attacked at least 97 times by the Imperial Japanese Air Force. The return of the 9th Division was one of the best kept secrets of the war. It was not until the convoy had entered port limits, that their presence in Australia was known to more than a handful of people. The presence of police barricades, the large number of military transport vehicles, buses, military police and a welcoming band Victoria Quay soon told residents that something big was afoot. Word soon spread with thousands of people converging on the wharf to welcome the troops and Australian Army nurses home. Queen Mary, Aquitania and Ile de France anchored in Gage Roads with Nieuw Amsterdam and Queen of Bermuda berthing in the Fremantle Inner Harbour. Four of the troopships continued their journey east on 20 February 1943 amid tight security due to the presence of Japanese submarines off the Australian coast. After the convoy had arrived at Fremantle, civilian communications between Western Australia and the east coast were cut for several days with Prime Minister Curtin requesting the media not report the movement of the 9th Division. He later admitted to journalists that he had not slept too well for three weeks due to concerns over the convoys safety. The three-funnelled Queen Mary can be seen in the background of photo 3 with Nieuw Amsterdam entering port, the veteran four-funnelled Aquitania is seen in photo 5. 08.01.2022 We are shocked to find out initially when attempting to book accommodation at Rottnest Lodge that the name has changed to Rottnest Karma. I rang the nominated n...umber and my call was taken by an overseas call centre who had absolutely no knowledge whatsoever about Rottnest. Upon eventually telling me that Karma had no availability this weekend she then asked if she should look for an alternative. I said yes so she gave me an option in Cottesloe.
