07.01.2022 #Repost @npywomenscouncil with @make_repost Jail can cause great harm to children. In Australia 10 yo children can be arrested, charged and jailed. 06.01.2022 CULTURAL HERITAGE BILL 2020 CONSULTATION TOO SHORT The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs will be asked to extend consultation about the proposed Cultural Heritage... Bill 2020 designed to replace the outdated Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972. An informal group of archaeologists and stakeholders known as the AHA Collective say the document is too large for the time period allowed for public consultations and feedback. AHA Collective spokesperson and convener, Anthropologist and Archaeologist Robin Stevens told Ngaarda Media the Bill is touted as giving greater protections for heritage and Indigenous people more say, but queries raised by the Collective with the Department have raised more questions than answers. "They talk about recognising cultural landscapes. Now you think, well that sounds like a good thing. But they say recognising, not protection, and when we queried them about that, and they go 'oh well, it's not really protection', or then another one explained it as 'it's reduced protection". Mr Stevens said an important example is songlines which are unique to Australia in terms of world heritage. According to Mr Stevens, one songline could go over 200 or more kilometres, across three language groups, six local shires, across 150 individual mining tenements owned by sixty different companies, as it follows the journeys of ancient creative ancestors. "The Department's ideas of managing that is for traditional owners to negotiate an agreement for every single tenement with all the different proponents along the way. That's just simply unmanageable. It only needs one group to maybe say 'oh well you can quarry that hill', and they destroy the songline". The Collective will request an 8 week extension to the deadline of 9 October to allow, in particular, smaller Aboriginal organisations to consider the proposed laws intended to protect and respect Aboriginal culture and balance outcomes for all stakeholders. 01.01.2022 I’m on an Island!! Had a small surreal moment yesterday sharing with the p-1 kids about my Traditional homeland. I was explaining the desert to them and ho...w my Ancestors only water source were the Mikiris. Then explained the Mikiris to them. Their beautiful little faces told me that they were struggling with the very idea of it. (Remember these are bubbas who have lived their whole lives on an island). Then I had this surreal moment of imagining how my Ancestors would probably be the same and not be able to grasp the idea of being surrounded by all of this water. I’m so proud to be a descendant of Desert people! I imagine life could not have been easy to say the least and the colonials wrote off my homeland as ‘uninhabitable’ (thank goodness!). But my Ancestors lived, and thrived, in the desert and i am extremely lucky, and proud, to have their blood run in my veins. #alwayswasalwayswillbe #wangkangurruwarrior #mungathirrimob #proudaboriginalwoman
