23.01.2022 Today I acknowledge the colonisation of this great country, along with its dark history that ensued for the traditional owners of the land. I feel privileged to have worked within the community of the Kariyarra Peoples of the Pilbara, WA, for 2 amazing years of my career as a nurse. I could never profess what it means to be an indigenous Australian, but thanks to the many Indigenous Health Care professionals, residents and community members I worked amongst, my understanding,... appreciation and recognition of their culture ran deep within my soul. The language, the landscape, the spirit of the connections, the stories, and the experiences. So on this day, I may sit quietly with my own thoughts about what it means to be Australian, but honestly i don’t need today’s date to do this. I acknowledge that today’s date is not one of celebration, but of historical significance for our Traditional Custodians and my deep desire for harmony and hope for a collaborative and all inclusive future as a nation.
