25.01.2022 "There had been discussions about a new building for years but there was no money, and no plan to find it. In those days, Wayside had a small handful of part-time staff and by the end of 2004, the handful had been reduced to just a couple of paid staff. Thankfully, enthusiastic volunteers have never been in short supply and it was they who kept our doors open and our wheels turning even through the days of heavy mud. Contrast that to today, where every day we see people arriv...e to be greeted with a fresh set of clothes after a lovely shower, perhaps the only moment of the day they are free to relax and have a moment alone. They can emerge clean and showered to a healthy array of dining options prepared lovingly in our professional kitchen with produce that is picked from our rooftop organic garden. And if today is the day that someone wants to turn their life around, there are talented staff and tailored care coordination provided to walk with them as they move to better health and better days. None of this was inevitable nor could it ever be taken for granted. It took vision and tenacity." In this week's Inner Circle, Pastor and CEO Jon Owen pays homage to a key person in our history. 25.01.2022 "More than ever were understanding that the health of each one is critical to the health of all. I hear the pain of puny individual wills being set aside in favour of a will for the health of all. Maybe, just maybe, this could be a lesson learned world-wide. If we could get everyone in this country COVID free, there is no way that we could head into the future with confidence, while the health of near neighbours suffered. Australia wont be able to rest until Indonesia, East... Timor, Papua New Guinea and indeed, the whole world has this under control. To look after just our own, is a puny ambition. We dont often think about the health of the whole world, but what a wonderful new world it would be if this became our new priority. Yes there is pain, but theres also a big destiny calling us too. Only someone who knows the shattering of the puny, knows anything about the freedom and joy that comes from heading toward a shared destiny. Someone who generally gets whatever they want in life, will be the last to understand that freedom." 23.01.2022 To celebrate the start of NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week, our community at Wayside Chapel Kings Cross was honoured to have Uncle Les perform a smoking ceremony for us. This was followed by a small lunch at both Kings Cross and Bondi. Although we couldn't commemorate the week with a massive Mob lunch like we normally would, this was a very meaningful moment for all who attended. The theme of NAIDOC this year is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ which acknowledging that the First Nations people have occupied and cared for our continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC also allows us at Wayside to acknowledge and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of our Aboriginal Program, our Aboriginal visitors and the incredible Aboriginal women who lead our program. #NAIDOC2020

19.01.2022 Our next volunteer wed like to profile isAndrew Webster! Andrew has been volunteering at the Wayside Chapel Community Service Centre front desk for the last six years. He always likes to say that he didnt choose to volunteer for Wayside, Wayside chose him. Andrew recalls on his first shift, that there was a man who walked in who was desparate need of shoes. When Andrew was able to find a pair of shoes that had the perfect fit, both Andrew and this man he had just met bega...n crying with joy and relief! This was a small moment, but a meaningful moment where two people truly met. Its moments like these we are thankful for our volunteers like Andrew, who are able to help people experiencing homelessness on what could be the worst day of their lives and give them fresh clothing, access to a hot shower, or just someone to talk to. Throughout all the moments that are hard to deal with or difficult to comprehend, Andrew loves that Wayside is still a place of love and laughter. Andrew has walked with us in the Long Walk Home, represented Wayside marching in the Mardi Gras Parade and celebrated with us at Volunteer parties. To Andrew, and to all our volunteers, this is a note to say you are missed, and we cant wait until we can work alongside each other once more. Watch this space for our next volunteer profile!

16.01.2022 After 15 years as Chair of Wayside Chapel, Ian Martin AM will retire from the role on 30 November 2020 at the Annual General Meeting. Ian’s contribution to Wayside has been extraordinary he was instrumental in leading Wayside out of financial ruin in the late 2000s and has worked tirelessly to build Wayside into the strong organisation it is today. We thank Ian for leaving a legacy of strong leadership and governance. In Wayside tradition though, Ian will continue to serv...e our community as a volunteer rather than a Board member. Wayside is delighted to announce that Graham Rich will succeed Ian as Chair of Wayside Chapel from 1 December 2020, with Cassandra Michie as Deputy Chair. Graham Rich is Managing Partner and Dean of Portfolio Construction Forum and has been part of the Wayside community for over a decade. Graham became a member of the Wayside congregation in 2011 and was appointed to the Board in 2013. Graham was also recently made Chair of Wayside’s Nomination and Governance Committee. Cassandra Michie is a partner at PwC Australia and a member of PWC’s Board of Partners. Cassandra is a long-serving volunteer at Wayside and has been on the Board since 2016. Both Graham and Cassandra are passionate about Wayside Chapel and the people we help, and will lead the organisation towards a strong future. Please join us in thanking Ian Martin for his service, as well as congratulating Graham Rich and Cassandra Michie in the comments below.

14.01.2022 One supporter Helen has given Wayside an incredibly thoughtful gift. Spending much of her time at home with limited vision, she has been knitting scarves all day every day to keep Waysides community warm over winter. This week, our outreach team is going to drop them off to vulnerable people isolated in their home, so they can spread Helens love across Sydney. Give a big shout-out to Helen in the comments below!

12.01.2022 "I was recently invited to lunch with a mate who was excited to tell me that he has just been accepted into the course of his dreams. We simply sat together and smiled. His has been a life of difficulties and disappointments and through it all he has emerged filled with hope. As I was captured in this moment he snuck out the back and paid for our meal. This was a gift of immense generosity, I know how tight his budget is and what it would have taken to save enough for it. I w...as a little embarrassed and insisted on paying, but he proceeded to tell me off, I am doing this for the same reason I’m studying, to be there for others, the way others have been there for me. It’s hard to not melt in the presence of such love, and I’m grateful to say that even though we aren’t related by blood, he is my brother." 10.01.2022 "On Sunday a group of about 20 Waysiders met at Bondi Beach to celebrate a different kind of birthday; a last birthday party. A dearly loved brother is in a grim fight with cancer and the doctors have ceased treatment. You wouldnt know it from speaking with him, he is so full of life. We surrounded him in love and in Wayside fashion sang a song that expresses how precious he is to us. One of our angels, Bronwyn, must have worked most of the night to make sure there was a tab...lecloth, beautiful homemade cake, and flowers for the table...Our birthday boy is also our hero who has emerged from the depths of despair and risen to the heights of love. Whenever anyone is tempted to lose hope, I always point to him, our dear James, for whom a life of vicious addiction has been overcome. Good news stories have been rather crowded out of our consciousness so ponder this story of hope and change. Even though the end of life looms nearby, there is no despair here but just gratitude for life and the satisfaction of victory that a smooth, comfortable life would never yield." 10.01.2022 "I wont pretend the way forward is easy and I wont say anything clever that minimizes our pain. The health of each other is too important. Some wonder if it is the end of our mission to create community but the truth is that we endure whatever we need to endure for the sake of one another. It is sad to sit in our empty cafe at Wayside Chapel devoid of people in the early to late afternoon in dead silence which was not long ago was the beating heart of our community. I m...iss the scores of voices and even the raised voices that this space was designed to provide. Yet it gives me comfort to know that our teams are out on the streets armed with care packs, finding people wherever theyve crashed for the night and doing all we can to offer the comfort of community with love that for now is on wheels and on foot, instead of in our buildings." 08.01.2022 Today is Wear it Purple Day, a day about fostering supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for rainbow young people. This year, its the 10th anniversary with the them "We are the change!" At Wayside Chapel, we strive to create this inclusive environment. Unfortunately we also see many young people who have not been, or are not accepted or feel safe in their communities, and the emotional toll this has on them. Today, our staff and furry friends dressed in pu...rple to show our support and to send a clear sign to rainbow young people that they are seen and safe at Wayside. Wed also like to thank the Kings Cross Police Area Command for having a few members of our community at your brunch for this special day. Among the pictured is Alex Greenwich, Independent Member for Sydney, Assistant Commissioner Gelina Talbot, Superintendent Paul Carrett and Waysides Community Educator Amanda Perkins.

Elizabeth says of her time at Wayside "I always knew I wanted to ...be involved in an organisation that helped vulnerable people. Each shift something magical happens when one of our visitors shares a little of their life journey. It has become a big part of my life, it has enriched my life. I can't imagine a life that doesn't include Wayside." A big thank you to Elizabeth for what you do and who you are. Watch this space for the next story of one of our beloved vollies. See more

07.01.2022 "Wayside is the place of the 13th attempt. Last week we had someone walk through our doors for the first time, but it was their 13th try. Theyd been shuffling up and down nervously past our doors a dozen times before steeling themselves to walk inside. There are a lot of people who are walking past our doors at the moment, attempting to pluck up the courage to come inside and whisper the words that their heart is screaming. They are words our culture has gone out of its way ...to train all of us from saying: Im struggling. We will always be there for the 13th or the 31st attempt because Wayside is the place where love and grace hit the road. We have always been there for the 13th attempt at rehab, or the 13th attempt to leave a bad relationship because we are the place that says to everyone, We are here, we love you, we see you, we stand with you. For todays R U OK Day, Pastor & CEO Jon Owen talks about the words that we struggle to say. Read it at http://bit.ly/ItisOk. 07.01.2022 "The hardest people to love are those who are closest, mostly because we cant see them; we tend to see only our own version of who they are. Were looking into our heads not at the person as they are in front of us. Intimacy requires constant adjustment, a constant movement away from, and back into closeness again. In this age of painful social distancing, perhaps there is an opportunity for us to step back and see the real person again. To see afresh, behold them in wonder,... free of our own interpretations and our own constructed ideals and images. This is a chance to heal relationships. Perhaps now we have room to see that mostly what annoyed us, are qualities that we least like in ourselves? Use this season to adjust your distance and the lens with which you see the people you know and love. You may be the one that is surprised." 02.01.2022 "I was met in a park in Kings Cross near the fountain this week by someone whom Id only known as a cranky fellow. To be honest, with this particular fellow, smaller doses are usually better than large. Id never been aware of doing anything to upset the man but always he seemed unhappy with me. As soon as I saw him this week, I knew there was a difference in him. He told me, I found out that you can be a carrier of more hurt and disappointment than you know about. He ackno...wledged that hed been quite rude to me in the past but that, Something about you reminded me of all that Id lostand even of things I didnt even know Id lost. Nothing Id done had brought about this change and when he left, I still wasnt sure what had set him on a better path, but was grateful to have witnessed a moment of transformation."
