22.01.2022 Just over 20 years ago, on September 20, 1999, an Australian led, multinational peacemaking mission known as INTERFET (The International Force East Timor) helpe...d to bring peace and stability to East Timor after years of unrest. In the days leading up to the INTERFET deployment, the Chief of the Defence Force at the time, Admiral Chris Barrie, said INTERFET would be ‘the most significant military undertaking we [Australia] have had since World War Two.’ To help commemorate this significant anniversary, RSL Victoria has published seven stories from servicemen and women, civilians and journalists who were in East Timor during INTERFET. Their stories are ones of service, resilience and hope. We encourage all of our followers to click this link: http://interfet.rslvic.com.au/ and explore our commemorative feature on INTERFET. 20.01.2022 It's R U OK?Day, a reminder that every day is a day to start a conversation that could change a life. Today we're calling on Australians to learn what to say after R U OK? so they can keep the conversation going when someone says they're not OK. There's more to say after R U OK?... Learn what to say when listening with an open mind Learn what to say when encouraging action Learn what to say when checking in Learn how to continue a conversation that could change a life. When we know what to say next we can help someone open up and find pathways to support long before they're in crisis. Learn what to say next and help us move closer to our vision of a world where we're all connected and are protected from suicide. Head to www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

16.01.2022 Every year on Remembrance Day, 11 November, we mark the date in 1918 when the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare, the end of the First World War. The day originally honoured 330,000 Australians who served in this war, and the 60,000+ who died. Remembrance Day has now become a time to remember all those who have served in all conflicts. 2020 marks the 75th Anniversary of the end of World Two and from October 1945 onwards, many Victor...ian soldiers started their long journey home. Share your stories of family and/or local veterans who returned from the Second World War. We may not be able to mark Remembrance Day as we usually would, but we can still observe a minute’s silence from wherever we are, in honour of all our veterans. Explore other ways you can safely recognise Remembrance Day, and learn more about the immense WWII sacrifice of Victorians on the frontline and changes on the homefront at www.vic.gov.au/world-war-2-75th-anniversary #RemembranceDay20 #VictoriaRemembers #redtoremember Image Courtesy: State Library of Victoria, LAC Eric Patterson, of Richmond (Vic.), disembarking from vessel Wanaka, 1945. 09.01.2022 Today we commemorate Victory in the Pacific and the end of the Second World War! Victory in the Pacific Day, or VP Day, commemorates the end of the Second World War on August 14, 1945, when Japan accepted the terms of the unconditional surrender set by the Allied Nations. Also known as VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, it is commemorated on August 15, the day that Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced the end of the war in a radio broadcast, before the signing of... the official surrender took place on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan, on September 2, 1945. VP Day meant an end to Australia’s war against Japan in the Pacific; a war that had begun half a world away in Europe that was brought close to home after Japan’s unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941, We remember the sacrifices and service of our Diggers who fought for our freedom in the Pacific. #wewillrememberthem. 06.01.2022 Join us to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day, marking the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan (1966), where D Company 6 Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) fought... a fierce battle against North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops close to the village of Long Tan. In 1969, 6RAR veterans held a memorial service there and, over time, the date became synonymous with all those who served in Vietnam, until 1987 when Prime Minister Bob Hawke officially declared Long Tan Day as Vietnam Veterans Day. The Shrine is a living monument, a building with a soul. Throughout our closure period, we will continue to honour the service and sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of Victorians. See more

04.01.2022 Our Air Force, Our People | Wing Commander Mary Anne Whiting works in our History and Heritage Branch and she’s sure seen her fair share of #AusAirForce history... first hand in her almost 50 years of service. Mary Anne enlisted in the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force back in 1970, and stayed on to take advantage of all the opportunities that unfolded when the WRAAF was absorbed into the RAAF. And we’re very glad she did. #AirForce100 #ThenNowAlways
