22.01.2022 Gun Shops are back open...well done SSAA WA !

22.01.2022 Mickey Creek Shooting Complex is CLOSED. A number of source have stated that as of today (3.4.20) that all sporting facilities are to be closed. So unfortunately, this includes even solo use of the SSAA Range. So, stay at home, stay safe, and well be permitted back soon enough.

22.01.2022 Category H update New South Wales SSAA NSW have been in regular contact with the Firearms Registry regarding the requirement of completing attendances. SSAA NS...W have sought exemptions for all members at this time due to the escalating events regarding COVID-19. A decision is expected to be made shortly. Tasmania A spokesperson for the Tasmanian Police said a meeting was held earlier this week and it was agreed nationally that a reduction is justified. Most jurisdictions will be reviewing the requirements on 1 July to determine the impacts on social isolation at that time. A final position for Tasmania is expected to be formed in early July, which is anticipated to be either: a) Pro rata reduction of pistol participation rates based on the impacts of social isolation policy in Tasmania and Nationally (likely to be around a 50% reduction); or b) Complete removal of pistol participation rate requirements for the year 2020 if social isolation policy continues after 1 July. For the time being Category H licence holders can determine their participation knowing that there will be a sensible reduction in requirements based on the health risks to the community. All Tasmanian Pistol Clubs have been advised of this situation and many have decided to close their ranges now that they have the certainty of reduced requirements. Licensees are still required to submit participation rate record cards for 2019. Relevant bodies for ACT and Victoria have been contacted, SSAA is yet to receive a response.

19.01.2022 Must be an election in the air

19.01.2022 The SSAA(WA) would like to wish all of our members a happy, healthy and safe Christmas and New Year. 2020 has been full of challenges for Sporting Shooters thro...ughout Australia, but we're really impressed with how positive, proactive and resilient our clubs and members have been. Right across WA, clubs rapidly and effectively implemented Covid Safe practices - keeping our members safe and facilitating State Titles for several of our disciplines as restrictions lifted. It's also been great to see clubs offer more shoots for members to ensure they meet their requirements for the year. We look forward to supporting you in 2021 and seeing continued growth, enthusiasm and participation in the shooting sports in WA. Sincerely, Ron Bryant & the State Executive Committee

18.01.2022 To all our many customers and friends Just an update with what is happening at Barry & Son Firearms. As most of you would be aware, the police have stopped us s...elling firearms and ammunition with certain exceptions that allow farmers and other nominated persons to acquire ammunition that can supply statuary declarations permitting them to acquire ammunition for special purposes. We will stay open until 5 PM Friday 3rd April 2020 As we are mainly a firearms orientated business it is simply not viable for us to continue fully operating, we will be closing until such time the Police allow us to open for normal trading. During the period we are closed our manager Tony Bysterveld will be available by appointment for: Tony can be contacted on mobile phone 0439 921 386 or email [email protected] for you to make an appointment or to answer your queries. As for me I have been out of action recovering from a complete shoulder replacement resulting from my kidnapping and assault last September. Am due to get out of my sling today after six weeks and hopefully should be all back to normal shortly. Thankfully my son Darryl and daughter in law Shery have been looking after me. I would like to thank all of our many customers for their past support and regret any inconvenience this shut down has caused through no fault of our own and look forward to the time when we can fully open for normal trading and once again look after you which I sincerely hope is some time soon. I would also like to thank all our staff for their help and assistance through this very trying time. In the interim stay safe and let's all hope we get through this Coronavirus (COVID-19) soon. Barry Lathwell Dealer Principal

17.01.2022 Category H participation - various states South Australia In South Australia, the Firearms Branch has applied a six-month exemption between March 1st and Septem...ber 30th this year. The branch said category H licensees should still supply information (relating to the number of shoots completed) to the Firearms Adjudication Section as per current procedure but no action will be taken if the required number has not been completed. Northern Territory The Northern Territory Firearms Policy and Recording Unit said while the mandatory participation rates are governed by regulation and will not be altered, its office will not will not be taking any action on licence holders who fail to meet their minimum requirements for the rest of the calendar year. Western Australia The Western Australia Police Force Licensing Enforcement Division has advised firearms clubs to manage their members according to current social distancing protocol and Government recommendations and regulations. The Division said this may include affording members the opportunity to catch up once the COVID-19 risk has been averted. Information will be provided on other states as it is available.

09.01.2022 Click the link to listen to Barry Lathwell on 6PR earlier this week explaining the kidnapping and robbery last year at Barrys Firearms. The sentence on the criminal caught is beyond comprehension ! Barry and his team has been massive supporters and sponsors of WCPRC for a very long time. The shop has now re opened for Firearm and Ammunition sales, so now is the time to support these guys that have always supported West Coast.

09.01.2022 SSAA (WA) COVID 19 STATEMENT The SSAA WA continues to be at the forefront with our commitment to playing our part in stopping the spread of COVID-19 and protec...ting our members and the wider community. All SSAA WA clubs are to be highly commended for their recent proactive approach in suspending their club operations and competitions from the 23rd March through to the 31st of May 2020 in line with all the major sporting codes across Australia. Since the beginning of this crisis, and in the space of less than one month, the WA Government have issued twenty-eight orders and directives under the powers of the Emergency Management Act, to deal with this serious threat to the health of everyone in our community. Many of these orders change daily as the situation escalates and we will continue to monitor and engage with Government at all levels. SSAA WA understands tough decisions need to be made and we will continue to support all health based recommendations to protect the people of Australia. We will continue to update members throughout this crisis and encourage all members to follow all Government Health advice and directives. Gun Shop Closures In light of this, we do not accept the recent decision by the WA Government to forcibly close Gun Shops and the Firearm Dealer Network, implying that Sporting Shooters and 85,000 licensed firearm owners in Western Australia are in any way a threat to public safety or pose any greater risk in being allowed to trade in the same way other hardware, sporting or camping suppliers remain open for business. Unlike any other sporting or recreational groups or individuals, all licensed law abiding firearm owners are background checked, required to comply with all regulations of the WA Firearms Act, and are approved by the WA Police, following a rigorous process to be issued with a firearm licence. To imply with some vague justification that since shooting clubs and shooting ranges have voluntarily closed, and due to the public health crisis, all licensed firearm owners cannot now be trusted is political grandstanding at best. Golf clubs remain open as do shops that sell golfing equipment. Furthermore to attempt to create an environment that suggested stockpiling of firearms and ammunition was occurring due to the pandemic, and refuse to accept the evidence available that international supply and demand, the falling Australian dollar, the traditional Easter holiday spike and the recent release of long awaited new sporting firearm models were all major contributors to a surge in sales, is further evidence of the recent and ongoing disregard shown to the firearm industry, that has been part of the Australian vernacular for over 100 years. Sporting Shooters, WA Firearm owners and the WA Firearm Industry are vilified and insulted yet again, with no justification to support this decision, zero consultation with key stakeholders and a complete contempt for the thousands of people now unemployed throughout the industry. This is clearly evident with the daily back flipping on the decision by the WA Police and the unworkable changes that have been hastily convened in an attempt to appear to be consultative with the sections of the firearm community that are now deemed essential. This call was made, despite the Prime Minister and the National Cabinet stating that all jobs are essential and as long as all rules relating to social distancing and hygiene could be maintained, businesses could and should remain open. The SSAA WA will support all measures to have this decision reversed and is actively consulting with the WA Firearms Traders Association, Members of Parliament and our legal team to ensure a fair playing field is maintained for our industry and all Firearm Owners across the State. The most highly regulated industry in the country and members of our community should not be treated any differently with regard to continuing to purchase, trade, maintain employment and support their families, whilst actively contributing to this National Emergency and following all the measures set down by State and Federal Governments. Firearm Applications being cancelled SSAA WA has recently received reports of firearm applications being declined and when questions were raised in Parliament, the following response was issued by the WA Police: Recent applications have also been assessed taking into account current directions made pursuant to the State of Emergency in Western Australia and legislative requirements. WA Police have also issued a response with respect to a question on refunds of firearm application charges stating the police component of firearm application fees is refunded if an application is declined. When an application is declined, the refund process is undertaken automatically, Australia Post fees associated with firearms applications are retained by Australia Post and is a fee for the service it provides SSAA WA has been in contact with the WA Police Ministers Office regarding this issue and we have yet to receive a clear answer to the questions posed relating to recent changes to the processing of firearm applications, genuine need or refunds of declined applications. Whilst it may be the situation that essential WA Police are being re tasked to other duties during this crisis, or for any other reason, law abiding new applicants and licensed firearm owners should reasonably expect a simple and direct answer to any changes to firearm licensing applications and the reasoning behind any changes. SSAA WA will continue to direct our enquiry to the WA Police Ministers Office and provide an update as soon as possible. In addition, should it be the case that WA Police are suggesting only partial refunds for any declined firearm applications is to be implemented; this is disgraceful and will be addressed immediately. The SSAA is the pre-eminent law-abiding firearm owners association in Australia, and by virtue of our responsibility to our members and all licensed firearm owners, we will always be part of the Australian community and contribute to dealing with any National Emergency. We will not tolerate emergency measures being used to unfairly target law-abiding firearms owners and allow rules to be created by WA Police, outside of the powers of the WA Firearms Act or Emergency Regulations. Members Role Now more than ever, we all need to follow the measures introduced to protect ourselves and the community. With hard borders to be introduced and regional travel across our state severely restricted, it is difficult to not feel that our freedoms are being stripped away on a daily basis. Our regular hunting and shooting activities are being curtailed, as are most other parts of our daily lives. Take this time to organize, clean and prepare your gear. Some gun shop retailers remain open and now is the time to support them. Buy some cleaning gear, update that scope you wanted, grab a new gun bag. These actions can be performed safely and within the rules around social distancing. When this crisis is resolved, we need our retailers to still be there, so we can all get back to doing what we all love to do. The SSAA WA will continue to fiercely advocate on your behalf, with the strong belief that every member also has a key role in your local community. Wherever you are across the State, ensure the message gets out there that we will always be law abiding and responsible members of the Community. Laws are made by the people and the people elect their politicians to ensure Laws are implemented for the benefit of everyone. The SSAA WA supports unity and solidarity amongst the Firearm Community and now more than ever we need to combine our energy and resources to be part of our own future. Ron Bryant SSAA (WA) State President

05.01.2022 G'day Team - Some info from ADI relating to Powder in Australia. "Domestic Propellant Demand... Australian Munitions has historically kept stock on hand, to allow our distributors (OSA and Winchester Australia) to place orders on us at any time of the year. Granted there have been occasions where particular orders have exceeded the current volume of stock on hand, and deliveries were delayed for a number of internal and external factors, but generally speaking we had stock of popular propellants available. However, over the past 12 months, and as far back as mid-2019 for certain propellants, we haven’t been keeping up with demand from the market. This isn’t some big conspiracy designed to short change our Australian customers, and contrary to the rumours we hear all the time, no, we don’t ship propellant offshore to the USA to the detriment of Australian reloaders. Quite simply though, the volume of propellant that the facility can produce has an upper limit. Combine this with the length of time it takes to manufacture a single batch of any type of propellant (roughly 6 months) and it is easy to see how sudden increases in market demand can affect availability on the whole. The 2020 calendar year was no exception; not only did we have a pandemic that saw people sitting at home for long periods of time with additional time to reload, but we also saw a sudden influx of sales across the domestic firearm industry as a whole, which resulted in a level of demand for our products that we haven’t experienced in at least 6 years. The level of demand was so unprecedented that we required an additional 40% of our typical annual volumes to maintain adequate supply. As a result of this, we’ve spent the second half of 2020 working extremely closely with both OSA and Winchester Australia to establish some new strategies. These have now been implemented, and it is our hope that moving forward these types of events can be managed and minimised." See more

02.01.2022 SSAA INTERNATIONAL TEAMS As we are all aware, the World Health Organisation has declared coronavirus (COVID-19) a global pandemic. With that in mind, it has bee...n decided by the SSAA National Executive that, with immediate effect, the SSAA will not send teams overseas to compete in events while the virus maintains its pandemic status. It is highly unlikely travel insurance would be available. This matter will be kept under constant review and any changes notified via the SSAA National website and by email to the National Discipline Chairmen. We regret having to take this action but the health and wellbeing of our members must remain our top priority. Furthermore, some of the 2020 National Championships have been either cancelled or postponed and this situation will be updated as information comes to hand. In the meantime, please contact the relevant Discipline Chairman for updates.
