20.01.2022 Yet another oil refinery bites the dust. The closure of ExxonMobil’s Altona oil refinery could trigger a domino-like series of closures of petrochemical busines...ses in Melbourne’s west, causing the loss of up to 2,000 well-paid unionised jobs as well as critical manufacturing capability and fuel security. About 300 jobs are directly affected by the closure but the Australian Workers’ Union warns the loss of the 72-year-old refinery means the effect would be much broader hitting contractors and manufacturers that rely on its outputs for six. Two of Australia’s four refiners have now rejected the Coalition’s ‘rescue package’ and will close and doubts still hang over Ampol’s refinery in Brisbane only Viva Energy has accepted the subsidy for its Geelong plant agreeing to keep its facility running as long as the handouts last. There are now just four oil refineries operating, down from 10 in 2010, and two Altona and BP’s Kwinana in Western Australia have confirmed their closures. As the Labor member for Brand is quoted as saying the government’s fuel security plan is going so well. See more
