08.01.2022 In celebration of Indigenous Literacy Day, we repost this WIN TV story about amazing parents making education and literacy a priority in their homes and the lives of their little ones. 3rd of June 2019, WIN News aired a story about Student Education Trust. In collaboration with CYP, they interviewed SET donor Katrina Gibson, Mossman Gorge MPower coach consultant Terrence Douglas and CYP General Manager of Cape Operations, Audrey Deemal. Transcript of story:... WIN News Cairns EDUCATION SAVING: Indigenous families in remote FNQ communities are making children’s education a priority. With the Cape York Partnership celebrating 10 years of supplying school books and through the self-funded, Student Education Trust. Reporter Siobhan McKenna: Success at school requires more than just attendance. Getting the right books, uniforms and equipment can be costly but are important to getting the most out of an education. That’s something that kids and parents in the remote communities of Far North Queensland have been working to ensure. SET donor, Katrina Gibson: A lot of them don’t have that kind of money, soon as O-Hub opened up the SET's accounts and I was interested and I applied for it and I’ve still got money saved up for my kids right up until today. Reporter Siobhan McKenna: The funds started in Cape York 10 years ago and has since rolled out to other remote communities like Coen, Aurukun and Mossman Gorge. It’s fully self-funded, with each parent encouraged to open an account when their child is born, gradually putting away money for the day that child starts school. Cape York Partnership - Terrence Douglas: So the first day of school the child has all the stuff from your uniforms, shoes, bags, lunch box. Reporter Siobhan McKenna: Today over 1000 students hold an account with a total of 3.3 million dollars saved over its years. Cape York Partnership, Audrey Deemal: It is a remarkable achievement especially for low income earning communities and disadvantaged communities. Reporter Siobhan McKenna: The money can only be unlocked for education, paying for camps, buying uniforms, books and even boarding school supplies. Making sure money is no barrier to a good education. Cape York Partnership, Audrey Deemal: What they love about the trust is that the money is available there whenever they need it. They don’t have to stress about trying to find the money to pay for things. Reporter Siobhan McKenna: The program has been so well received the Cape York Partnership hopes to one day roll it out to all remote communities in Far North Queensland
