19.01.2022 Alexander Bell threw down this challenge 100 years ago: We have very many different kinds of smells, all the way from the odour of violets and roses up to asafoetida. But until you can measure their likenesses and differences you can have no science of odour. Now this challenge has been met by researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Some ground breaking research that could digitise aromas. Read more about how they did it here: #smell #aroma #digital #science #research #perfume #odour

16.01.2022 Hebrew below Mauritius, an island of paradise in the Indian Ocean, has been painted black due to an oil leak from a sunken oil tanker. It is an environmental... emergency and one of the most horrific natural disasters the island has ever known. The leak endangers the corals, fish and other creatures that live on the beaches. The leak also poses a direct danger to the health of the islanders, and especially to that of the many volunteers who enlisted in an attempt to limit the spread of oil and save as many animals as possible. One of the biggest dangers is the inhalation of hydrocarbon contaminants. In the absence of dedicated protective equipment, some volunteers went into action equipped with N95 masks, which are used to protect against COVID, without knowing that they are ineffective against hydrocarbon contaminants. Beyond the health hazard, there are also many economic dangers to the country and its inhabitants: Fishing, which plays a significant part in employment on the island, is at risk - the fishermen are worried about their livelihood. The extensive pollution on the beaches has killed much fish. They anticipate that they will not be able to make a living from fishing during the next five years, and moreover, food security on the island, much of which is based on fish, could be undermined. Also, the pristine lagoons in Mauritius, which have now been damaged by the oil spill, attract many tourists each year and on whom, in fact, the island's economy is based (with a revenue of $ 1.6 billion a year). As of now, they have finished pumping most of the oil from the tanker, but not before more than 1,000 tons of crude oil spread in the azure waters off the southeast coast of the island. The Weizmann Institute's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences conducts experimental and theoretical research focusing on understanding the complex inter-relationships among the major Earth systems, as well as other planets. 15.01.2022 New #cancer #researcher joins the Weizmann Institute of Science:

14.01.2022 Proteins are dynamic entities given to internal motion, as well as constantly exchanging loosely bound hydrogen atoms with surrounding water. Weizmann Institute of Science researchers have now used a new spectroscopic tool based on hyperpolarised nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), to show that protein 'segments' are more exposed when 'folded' instead of the conventional thought of being 'unfolded'. Curious? Read the link below:

14.01.2022 The Jerusalem Post / JPost.com reports on Weizmann's new technology that may help treat cancer. 07.01.2022 New research at the Weizmann Institute of Science - recently published in Nature - has found that beyound verbal and non-verbal communication, the neural circuits that underlie the processing of eye contact are embedded in a relatively primitive part of the brain called the amygdala. They also found that found that this eye contact encoding occurs in the same kind of amygdala neural circuit associated with encoding positive and negative stimuli.
