22.01.2022 Where all our ladies at? This week is Women's Health Week, and here at Wellness Embodied, we highly value the fitness of our female clients, and focus on the specific differences between men and women to optimise our training programs. Did you know, that a lot of common guidelines we have around diet and exercise training comes from male-based studies? This can make it difficult to generalise the data for females who are exercising and training, and wanting to optim...ise their health! So lets bust a few quick myths for you, in the hope that it may help with your training! Women need less protein than men BUSTED: women who are consistently resistance training should be consuming approximately 2.0g/kg of body weight per day, with 30g being consumed following a training session. Our protein needs also increase as we age! Intermittent fasting will help with fat loss BUSTED: when women intermittently fast, it actually increases our sympathetic drive, which increases respiratory rate, anxiety and levels of depression, and can even increase the visceral fat percentage in your body, even if you are meeting your body's needs! Resistance training should be avoided as we age BUSTED: when women reach the post-menopause period, our bone density actually begins to decrease. This is the best time to lift heavy sh*t! Weight training can increase the amount of cortical bone in our skeletal tissue, increasing bone density and strength! This is super important as we age and our risk of falls increases, it can help to prevent injuries in the long run! If you have any questions on how to improve your training techniques, the physio's at Wellness Embodied will be happy to assist you in personalising your training program to ensure that you are getting the best out of your body that you can! And remember: who run the world? GIRLS! #WomensHealthWeek2020

15.01.2022 Balance Awareness Week is an annual awareness campaign to broaden the public’s understanding of balance-related vestibular disorders, such as Meniere’s disease and vestibular migraine, and symptoms ranging from dizziness and imbalance, to vertigo and tinnitus. While many of these conditions are incurable, faster and more accurate diagnosis, along with effective coping strategies, can greatly improve patients’ quality of life. Nearly 1 in 5 people suffer fro...m vestibular dysfunction. Yet despite the widespread occurrence of vestibular disorders, the word vestibular is not commonly understood. Few know that vestibular refers to the inner ear and brain the complex, mysterious human system that controls our sense of balance. When something is amiss in the vestibular system it can greatly affect a persons day to day life. It doesn't have to be like that. Here at Wellness Embodied we successfully treat many patients with vestibular disorders. We offer a comprehensive 1 hour vestibular assessment with our physio Clara, to get to the root of the symptoms and help live a better, more comfortable life. For further information on our assessment please call 42319777 or email us on [email protected] to discuss your case in further detail. 14.01.2022 There are many causes of recurrent headache that can persist for many years. 3 common types are tension-type headache, migraine, & headaches secondary to a disorder in one of the top three or four joints in the neck. These neck-related headaches are commonly called ‘cervicogenic’ headache. Cervicogenic headache is usually felt on one side of the head. It is always the same side & unlike migraine, neck headaches do not swap sides. Cervicogenic headache is o...f mild-to-moderate intensity and is always accompanied by neck pain. Most typically, the pain begins in the neck and then spreads to a headache. What causes cervicogenic headache? Excessive strain caused by poor working postures can irritate the upper joints of the neck and cause a headache. The joints can also be injured by trauma such as a sporting or recreational injury or a motor vehicle crash. In the late middle-aged to older age groups, osteoarthritis of the upper neck joints is another common cause of cervicogenic headache. Neck pain and headaches are typically made worse by sitting or working for a long time in one posture, and are typically aggravated by neck movements. The neck is tender & movements are often slightly restricted or stiff. About one-third of people with cervicogenic headache also report some light-headedness, unsteadiness or visual disturbances. Our therapists use a variety of treatment methods for best practice management of cervicogenic headache. >Education, advice and assurance >Manual therapy >Postural Ergonomics/Advice for work/home >Exercises >Stress Management >Self-Management Program >Dry Needling If this sounds like you, we can help! 10.01.2022 There are numerous potential health benefits for women who exercise during and after pregnancy. After all, childbirth is often compared to a marathon and theref...ore, preparation should be considered. To coincide with #WomensHealthWeek, Vice-chair of Queensland chapter of the Womens, Mens and Pelvic Health group Brooke Dobo, APAM, and Men’s and Pelvic Health Physiotherapist Tory Toogood, MACP, contribute five evidence based practice points about the benefits of exercise during and after pregnancy. 09.01.2022 Physiotherapy plays an important role in stroke rehab. They use a variety of assessment tools and measures to determine the most effective treatment plan. Resea...rch suggests that physiotherapy is highly effective in retraining functional movements. This may include task-specific training, where specific tasks are practised according to your ability and goals, and assisted treadmill training where you engage in high repetitions of stepping practise to relearn walking. Research is ongoing in determining what dose, frequency and mode of therapies works best. #StrokeWeek Stroke Foundation https://choose.physio/your-condition/stroke-recovery

01.01.2022 October is Mental Health Awareness Month! Our mental health has a huge impact upon our physical health. It can impact upon our fatigue levels, our pain levels, and limit the extent to which we participate in our daily life. Have you noticed that when you feel more stressed or more tired, your injuries, or little aches and niggles tend to feel worse? This is our body's way of telling us to slow down, and take a minute. ... So, what can this look like in the context of looking after your mental health? For some people, it is getting out and exercising, which has been shown to release endorphins, our body's natural happy hormones! For others, it can be taking the time to complete some mindfulness or meditation, just to bring you back into the moment. At Wellness Embodied, we value our mental health, and understand the part it plays in our recovery from injury. Next week, we will be sharing some tips and tricks on how to look after your mental health at home, which will assist you in your recovery journey. In the meantime, if you or anyone you know is struggling, you can contact the following services: Source - https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/mental-health-services-info
