23.01.2022 "Karin Schaupp’s playing is so perfect, so complete, that it seems like a miracle." Badische Zeitung (Germany). In just 2 week's time, on Sunday, November 10, at 2:30 pm, Karin Schaupp will be performing at Wesley. Karin is an outstanding guitarist on the international scene. In her teens she won prestigious international prizes in Italy and Spain, and is today sought after internationally as a recitalist, soloist and festival guest. She has collaborated with the world’s top performers, and in 2017 she won an Aria for her third album with singer Katie Noonan, Songs of The Latin Skies. Karin is Head of Classical Guitar at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University.

21.01.2022 A close-to-sellout audience was magnificently entertained by the mastery of classical guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan at their "Past, Present and Future" concert at Wesley of Warragul on Saturday night. The performance was presented by the West Gippsland Arts Centre and it had the audience spell-bound throughout the entire concert which featured an extraordinary variety of the brothers' extensive repertoire. It would be a brave person who would pick "favourites" from t...he concert that included compositions from Handel, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, and Towner as well as from several composers from South America and including some of Leonard's compositions. One notable diversion was their performance of pieces that they had composed and arranged for the soundtrack of a movie "A Boy Called Sailboat" that had the audience applauding for more. We did mention in our "reminder" post on Friday that it was "highly recommended and not to be missed" - those who didn't attend are the poorer for it. See more

15.01.2022 We are delighted to announce our first 'Simply Music' concert for the 2020 season, "A Sunday Afternoon in Vienna", based on a format used by the Robert Stolz Vienna Music Society. The Robert Stolz Viennese Music Society Inc. was established in 1984 to promote and perform music in the Viennese style. Robert Stolz (1880 1975) was an Austrian songwriter and conductor as well as a composer of operettas and film music; it was his work in the film industry from 1930 onwards whic...h made him popular to a wider audience. In America, Stolz achieved fame with his concerts of Viennese music, starting with "A Night in Vienna" at New York’s Carnegie Hall after which he received many invitations to compose music for shows and films, and he received two Academy Awards nominations: Waltzing in the Clouds was nominated for Best Original Song in 1941, and his score for It Happened Tomorrow was nominated for Best Dramatic or Comedy Picture Score in 1945. The Wesley concert will include popular favourites from the Viennese operetta, opera and song presented by Soprano, Lee Abrahmsen, Tenor, Roy Best, Accompanist, David McNicol, Violin, Nyssa Sanguansri, and Piano, Lesley Yim. Some examples of what to expect are songs from Johann Strauss, ‘Die Fledermaus’ The Laughing Song; from Franz Lehar’s, ‘The Merry Widow’ (Vilja) (Lippen Schweiggen) and from ‘The Land of Smiles’ You Are My Heart’s Delight. My Hero from the ‘Chocolate Soldier’ by Oscar Strauss and from ‘The Student Prince’ I'll walk with God and Be my Love. The Robert Stolz concerts always conclude with ‘Vienna City of My Dreams’ which will have the words printed in the program for a ‘sing-along’. The final details will be confirmed on this Facebook page closer to the concert date, but the above is a good indication of what one can expect to hear.

12.01.2022 On Friday evening we were hugely entertained by a magnificent performance by the West Gippsland Chorale who presented their 2019 "Hallelujah! It's Christmas!" concert at Wesley of Warragul. We were introduced to the Chorale's recently-appointed Music Director, Kim Butcher, and also to the Chorale's new Accompanist, Chris Sim. Between them, Kim and Chris can boast a vast amount of musical experience, both locally and internationally. Kim has an absolutely charming manner and m...ethod of presentation and she soon had the audience enthralled in the programme which included a variety of Christmastide music ranging from Barber's "Agnus Dei", to Vivaldi's "Gloria", to Britten's "A Century of Carols" and quite a range of the more traditional carols (some of which included enthusiastic audience participation). Additional, vibrant and professional performances were provided by instrumental soloists from local secondary colleges (Nate Lucas, trombonist from St Paul's Anglican Grammar School who performed Goffin's "The Philosopher"; and Nathaniel Jackson from Chairo Christian School, who played Holst's "In the Bleak Midwinter" on the cornet). Another soloist, Mary Ockerse, one of the Chorale's sopranos, delivered an excellent rendition of Lorenc's "Ave Maria". Members of the Lucas and Sim families gave great accompaniment support on the piano and violin for the soloists. The finale was the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's oratorio "Messiah", a fitting ending for a wonderful concert. This concert will be presented again today (Sunday 15 December) at Wesley of Warragul at 2 pm. If you weren't there at Friday evening's performance, go to the concert this afternoon and be charmed, entertained, and leave elated. Highly recommended.

09.01.2022 A final reminder! This Saturday... 8:00pm at Wesley of Warragul, the West Gippsland Arts Centre will present the return of The Grigoryan Brothers with their new show, 'Past, Present and Future'. Highly recommended and not to be missed.

08.01.2022 A sizeable and appreciative audience attended Wesley's final concert in its 'Simply Music 2019' season last Sunday afternoon. They were not disappointed. Classical guitarist Karin Schaupp performed a rare solo concert in Wesley's intimate space, and she was moved to comment how refreshing it was to perform with guitars made by two of Australia's internationally-renowned luthiers - WITHOUT the need for amplifiers! The sound was clear and natural, a pleasant rarity these days. ...The highlights were too numerous to describe here but a couple of examples will provide a taste of this excellent concert. Mauro Giuliani's "Sonata Eroica" was truly "heroic" because the composition stretched both the instrument and the performer to their limits. Karin also performed a new work for spoken word and solo guitar composed especially for her by Australian composer Richard Charlton entitled "Suspended in a Sunbeam". The words included a quote from famous astronomer/astrophysicist Carl Sagan - "a pale blue dot" - which describes the view of Earth from the Voyager 1 space probe, and hence the title of the piece, "Suspended in a Sunbeam". Then, towards the end of the concert came some more familiar tunes from Isaac Albeniz - "Asturias". Compositions from Fernando Sor, Giulio Regondi, Franz Schubert, and several others, rounded off a most enjoyable afternoon. See more

01.01.2022 The penultimate 'Simply Music' concert for 2019 (The Melnychenko Duo) has received another good review from John Hart, one of our strongest supporters. Read what John had to say in his letter to the Warragul and Drouin Gazette (Tuesday, October 22 issue). Also included is a photo. A short video may be added later if this computer (or Facebook) allows me.
