24.01.2022 We and our members are all concerned and support measures to reduce the spread and duration of the Covid-19 virus but disagreed with the recent decision by the WA Commissioner of Police to close Gun Shops on the 27th March and the subsequent direction that it only apply to the part of the business that is used for the sale of firearms or ammunition with the implication that the states licenced firearm owners are a threat to public safety. A letter offering constructive points to consider was sent to the Hon Michelle Roberts MLA Minister for Police.

23.01.2022 At a time when further restrictions are now affecting our members, with applications for initial Firearm Licences and additions being declined, it is pleasing to see the number of organisations representing licenced firearm owners standing up against the closure of gun shops and the general sale of firearms and ammunition in WA, Qld and Victoria.

22.01.2022 POSITION AVAILABLE The WA Shooting Association (WASA) is currently looking to appoint an Administration Officer to carry out the Association's administration and secretarial duties. Are you interested in the future of our sport and recreational shooting, or know someone who is? WASA is the representative umbrella body for WA's shooting and archery state associations and you will be working with an enthusiastic Council of Delegates. The position is voluntary with out of pocket expenses and honorarium paid. Computer skills are essential and except for meetings, work will be from home. 21.01.2022 Just received attached to an email from WAPOL Licencing Services (Firearms). Declined applications are being reinstated. It's good to to see a result when organisations work together supporting their members.

21.01.2022 It is good to see that the State Administrative Tribunal action is continuing to establish whether the recent decisions made by WA Police in declining firearm applications were unlawful. Consultation is important and should be continued by all shooting associations acting together for the benefit of firearm owners but that does not mean other alternatives are wrong. All avenues available, consultation, political and legal should be utilised together to achieve what is fair and right for all licenced firearm owners and we should be less critical of those working towards that end.

17.01.2022 Back to normal as from tomorrow. Gun Shops can resume the sale of firearms and ammunition and declined firearm applications are being reinstated. We hope that the inconvenience to licenced firearm owners, disruption to the business of gun shop owners, dealers, manufacturers, repairers and their employees was beneficial and assisted policing during the COVID-19 emergency.

14.01.2022 What better sports for social distancing are there than shooting and archery. Many clubs in our member associations with the restriction of the 2-person rule being allowed to gather had chosen to close their ranges, others allowed members access to continue shooting within the restrictions. With the easing of these restrictions, particularly allowing non-contact recreational activities such as private picnics in the park, fishing, boating, hiking and camping - all in complia...nce with travel restrictions and the 10-person rule clubs can now look to commence activity on their ranges as long as they comply with the directions issued on the 26th April. We have all been affected by the restrictions, whether competitive shooters, (firearm and archery) or recreational hunters involved in gathering food or the destruction of feral pests. 06.01.2022 IS THE TRUTH OUT THERE [The WA Government said it had not been made aware of any concerns about the closures, which it said were necessary because of the declared state of emergency.] On the 8th April WASA wrote to the Minister for Police, Michelle Roberts MLA with these concerns.... ["The closure of gun shops and firearms dealerships was based on advice from WA Police and was made to protect the WA community during this unprecedented time," a spokesman said.] WA Police protecting the WA community from who? You, a licenced firearm owner, who is background checked, required to comply with all regulations of the WA Firearms Act and are approved by the WA Police, following a rigorous process before being issued with a firearm licence.
