24.01.2022 COME AND PAINT THESE HOPE POLES! You may have heard of peace poles (there’s one in St Lucia) but you’ve likely never heard of hope poles. These 5 poles are the first Hope Poles in Brisbane. In short, they are going to provide a visual reminder of the resilience and grit people showed through the coronavirus of 2020 a pretty tough year by all accounts.... Fittingly, Indooroopilly’s Rainbow Forest Park is the home of the hope poles. I hope children will be able to paint the poles in bright, happy designs to reflect the positive attitude of 2020. If you’d like to get involved, please give me a call so I can connect you with paint and brushes. It’ll be lovely to cheer up the neighbourhood a bit. 34070005. Feel free to tag someone (a parent?) who might like to paint a pole as a holiday activity with their kidlets.

23.01.2022 SIR JOHN CHANDLER PARK UPGRADE Thanks to local resident Ross, who made the suggestion of putting more park benches in Sir John Chandler Park. This park, where the boat ramp is at the end of Meiers Rd, Indooroopilly, is extremely popular with all ages. With such a wonderful view of the river, the idea of more bench seats was spot on.... I'm pleased we were able to get a couple of benches installed, so there's more for you to see and do in the park. It might seem like a little thing, but they all add up. Got an idea for a park improvement? I'm on 3407 0005 and I'd love to hear from you!

22.01.2022 SCHOOL'S OUT, FOR THE SUMMER Although some schools have already finished for the year, the state schools break up today. Congratulations to all students (and teachers & parents!) for being resilient in a tough year.... A special congratulations to our graduating classes of 2020. 22.01.2022 MERRY CHRISTMAS, INDOOROOPILLY MEN'S SHED! It's been a tough year for community groups all over the place. Yet another of our local groups showed their resilience in a time of adversity. They pulled together and pulled through. The shed was kind enough to invite me along to their Christmas Party in Keating Park, Indooroopilly. Lovely people, yummy food and great conversation.... Well done to the executive and the members of the shed. Here's hoping that next year is nothing like 2020! Indooroopilly Men's Shed

21.01.2022 A GREAT HONOUR Thank you to the wonderful students of Indooroopilly State School who made this wreath, which I laid for Remembrance Day, today. They also made a purple wreath, to signify the sacrifice of animals in war, which I laid at Toowong Cemetery.... Don't you think a wreath made by students has so much more meaning than a simple flower arrangement? The RSL was quite chuffed with the effort of the students. Indooroopilly State School Toowong RSL

21.01.2022 STREET LIBRARIES COMING SOON Need a book? Take a book. Got a book? Give a book! 11 of these little libraries have been ordered. We've received our first and the rest will be delivered soon. Where would you like to see them? One very popular suggestion was at the dog off leash area at Perrin Park. Feel free to comment below or call the office: 3407 0005.... Can't wait to roll these out around the neighbourhood. It'll bring people together and encourage kids to get more engaged with reading!
21.01.2022 BRISBANE STREET, ST LUCIA: SPEED REDUCTION Be part of the conversation and hear what is being proposed for Brisbane Street speed action.
20.01.2022 PUBLIC E-BIKES ARE COMING TO BRISBANE! E-bikes are coming to Brisbane as part of a vision for a more modern, connected future. E-bikes will be coming to Brisbane next year as part of Brisbane City Council’s e-mobility strategy to provide more travel options to more residents around the city.... Since e-scooters arrived two years ago Brisbane residents had jumped on board the e-mobility trend and that Council would now take steps to introduce 2000 e-bikes for residents and visitors to enjoy. The CityCycle scheme would be phased out over the next 12 months, at no cost to ratepayers. Brisbane has embraced the CityCycle scheme over the past 10 years, but with ridership declining since November 2018, a decision needed to be made over the scheme’s future. The reality is that CityCycle is not as popular as it used to be, and COVID-19 has seen numbers reduced further. Today there are five trips being taken on an e-scooter for every trip on a CityCycle. Residents have voted with their feet and are opting for more modern transport options, like e-scooters and it’s up to Council to continue to innovate to meet the needs of today, not 10 years ago. Every single trip taken out of a car means less congestion in Brisbane and a more active and sustainable city. This transition would be supported by the new E-Mobility Strategy, with the draft now open for community consultation until the end of February next year. #cycling #citycycle #ebike #ebikes #bike #bikeride #brisbane
20.01.2022 COUNCIL'S DRAFT OFF-ROAD CYCLING STRATEGY Cycling in Brisbane is booming, so Brisbane City Council is working with the community to find locations for a range of new facilities as part of the "Off-Road Cycling Strategy". We have 31 kilometres of multi-use tracks on Mt Coot-tha and we need to find the right balance between off-road cycling and nature conservation. Obviously, people are discouraged from creating their own tracks in nature conservation areas.... For more information you can follow the link below, and make an online submission. Your feedback will go right to the Council project team who will be able to compile the feedback to form the next stage of the draft off-road cycling strategy. More here: https://jamesmackay.com/councils-off-road-cycling-strategy/

18.01.2022 TARINGA COMMUNITY GARDEN: UPDATE Progress! We're getting there... Council has now constructed 3 "pads" at the garden, which will be the bases for things like the shelter, storage shed, and so on. The second hand-made planter box is now also onsite! We're getting pretty close to actually being able to use the space!... The entrance to the community garden is now unlocked and available for public access, so pop down and check it out. The compost bins are now re-opened and ready for use. Huge thanks and pat on the back for the work and patience of the dedicated volunteers in the Taringa Community Garden group!
17.01.2022 EVERYONE LOVES CONSULTATION! All sorts of paw-ple attended the green bridge consultation sessions recently, including Sadie the Groodle (how cute!). We had three green bridge consultation sessions in our area: Toowong library, St Lucia Bowls Club and on Saturday morning we had a session at Toowong Rowing Club.... I attended all three sessions and was thrilled to meet and speak with locals who had lots of ideas about bridge use, alignment and purpose. Whatever your opinion, you are encouraged to make a submission about the green bridges. 14.01.2022 ARTWORK INSTALLATION DELAYED You might remember back in July I advised that Toowong's High St Rail Bridge was getting a new mural. See the image for the artist's impression of what it will look like. Unfortunately, COVID has seems to have hit art very hard. A few of our planned art pieces around the Walter Taylor Ward have been delayed, and I've just been advised "Marginalia Wrapped" has been delayed until 2021.... Council says it's to do with QR granting approvals but it could just be this topsy-turvy world in which we live. Here's a bit more about the artwork: Artwork Concept Marginalia Wrapped brings together enlarged gestural marks and abstracted details to wrap the Toowong Overpass. Starting with a collection of shapes from the built environment I have applied these to patterned fabric that is captured in a moment of flowing movement, further abstracting these shapes and creating an illusion of shifting perspectives. As patterned shapes wrap the mural surface covering and enfolding the structure they are overlaid with enlarged gestural marks celebrating the individual and creating a human connection in urban space. These enlarged gestural scribbles transform the incidental into the monumental in this work. The design references an idea of simultaneous concealing and revealing as the gestural marks are painted as a translucent overlay on the surface of the work.
14.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS TARINGA COMMUNITY GARDEN! Brisbane City Council's WasteSMART Awards were held today in Brisbane City Hall. 14.01.2022 MERRY CHRISTMAS TO THE FUR BABIES! Thanks for coming along to the "dogs' breakfast" in Perrin Park. ICYMI, we had free dog washes, free coffee, free gift bags, free sausage sizzle, a bouncy castle and more.... It'll happen again next year, so keep an ear out for the next event. 14.01.2022 GUYATT PARK RIVERBANK STABILISATION If you've been down to Guyatt Park CityCat terminal lately, you might have noticed there's some erosion of the riverbank. You'll be pleased to know funding has been secured to stabilise the riverbank at Guyatt Park. ... Work will include the installation of rock protection and there will be vegetation planting, too. This is complex work which required a detailed design, which has now been completed. Approvals (it's a sensitive area, so it needs to be done according to spec) are expected in May 2021, and construction is expected to be completed by the end of September 2021. Meanwhile, the riverbank is being monitored by Council. We've arranged for a fence to be installed and it is currently safe. Need more information? I'm on 3407 0005.

12.01.2022 LOCK YOUR HOMES, LOCK YOUR CARS <
12.01.2022 TOO MUCH SPEEDING ON HILLSIDE TERRACE Residents of Hillside Terrace and The Esplanade in St Lucia keep reporting cars speeding on those roads (it's really one road with two names) as a racetrack. We've contacted Indooroopilly Police, and they've said they'll get more enforcement on the street.... Interestingly, Indooroopilly Police seem to have indicated they have reduced staffing for this sort of thing, at the moment. Maybe their resources have been re-directed to other local issues? I'm only guessing.
12.01.2022 GETTING THIS BUS STOP SEAT FIXED This seat is in Taringa. I've asked for it to be cleaned up a bit, so people might actually want to sit on it. The better we can make public transport, the more people will use it. That means more cars off the road, and less congestion.... If you see something that needs some TLC, I'm on 3407 0005.
11.01.2022 TOOWONG TUNNEL: DO YOU KNOW WHERE IT IS? I won't lie: this tunnel is currently terrible. But it has so much potential! If you don't know the tunnel I'm talking about, watch this video. And watch to find out the "out of the box" thinking we're trying to apply to make this more attractive, and more importantly: more useable.
11.01.2022 The Fix A Footpath Blitz continues! The big gum tree had lifted and cracked this footpath. We reconstructed the path to improve safety and to make it more accessible. If you see a broken footpath please report it to the office so we can get it fixed: 3407 0005.
10.01.2022 GREEN BRIDGE UPDATE There’s been a terrific amount of interest in the Toowong to West End and St Lucia to West End green bridges. As an update this post has information about three things: Extended consultation period Factsheets Transport modelling... I’ve loved meeting and listening to all the people who came to the consultation sessions on this side of the river. We had events at Toowong Library, St Lucia Bowls and Toowong Rowing Club. Council wants to work with local residents to get these critical projects right. Accordingly, you might be interested to know that the deadline for providing feedback (for the bridge alignment options) to Council has been extended to Wednesday 31 March. It’s great that so many people have given feedback, because it’s feedback from the community and stakeholders that has a critical role in developing each project, including the proposed alignments, landing locations, designs and ongoing connections to the city-wide walking and cycling network. Some people have asked about the proposed alignment options and transport models. I’m told the shortlisted options have been informed by a range of technical investigations including traffic and transport modelling, environmental studies, site investigations and initial cost estimates, as well as feedback from initial consultation on these projects, in late 2019. You’ll be pleased to know that, based on the community feedback, Council has prepared a series of detailed fact sheets. You can check them out on Council’s green bridge websites. Here’s the Toowong page: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au//toowong-to-west-end-green The fact sheets outline: the proposed bridge alignment and landing locations potential private property requirements potential impacts to local character, amenity and green space the required width and height of the navigational channel connectivity to the existing public and active transport network estimated daily trip numbers opportunities for new or enhanced riverside open space. You’re encouraged to check these fact sheets and provide your feedback on the alignment options during the consultation period. Remember, you can provide feedback by contacting the project team directly on 1800 318 166 during business hours or by email at [email protected]. The expected daily trip numbers for each bridge alignment option are estimated using the Brisbane Strategic Transport Model (BSTM) which is the standard model developed by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads for transport modelling in the Brisbane region. The estimated daily trip numbers are based on the combined volumes for walking, cycling, walk to public transport, recreational and e-scooter trips modelled for the years 2031 and 2041. These numbers are initial estimates only and will be subject to further refinement through the development of the project’s preliminary business case.
09.01.2022 IMPROVING ROAD SAFETY AT SCHOOLS Let's make this as positive as possible... Sometimes busy parents forget to obey traffic rules in the hustle and bustle of school pick-ups and drop-offs. OBEY TRAFFIC RULES = IMPROVE SAFETY AT SCHOOLS... To remind drivers how important it is to stick to the rules, we've printed some banners to go up at schools. These are available - free of charge - to highlight road safety, especially when kids are about. If you think your local school needs one, let me know: 3407 0005

09.01.2022 INDOOROOPILLY AVENUE OF SHADE: STAGE 1 Construction of the new Avenue of Shade has started in McCaul St, at the back of Indooroopilly High. Stage 1 was widening the road, to make it easier for cars to pass and safer for passengers to get in and out of cars. They also paved the walkway.... Residents have written to me and pointed out how, unfortunately, the road surface now looks pretty average. It looks like there are 4 stripes in the road, and there are some rough edges. I agree! I requested Council put McCaul Street on the list for resurfacing. Fingers crossed. Meanwhile, work will soon commence reconstructing the footpath and planting the new shade trees. The footpath will be wider (from the kerb to the fence) meaning students will have more room and the trees will make it more pleasant while they're waiting for their lift. Watch this space!

They've done a great job getting things this far and we're all excited about pulling it all together in 2021. I'm excited to see this garden get up and running. 05.01.2022 ST LUCIA TO WEST END GREEN BRIDGE Have your say (consultation now open): Brisbane City Council has proposed 3 green bridge options in St Lucia. One of the alignment options connects Guyatt Park to West End, with the other alignment options landing at Keith or Munro Streets.... As the former president of the St Lucia Community Association, I have advocated for some years for no bridge in Guyatt Park. For this reason, I will be supporting option C. I encourage you to have your say on the current options, to tell Council your preference. Consultation on the proposed green bridge is now open, and Council is seeking your feedback. I encourage you to make a submission about your preferred alignment. Submissions can be made online and can take less than 3 minutes. Importantly, submissions: Need to be in writing so they can be classed as valid (use the online form for speed) Close on 29 January 2021, so act now to make your voice heard For more information or to view the bridge alignment options, visit: https://jamesmackay.com/guyattpark

02.01.2022 BETTER FOOTPATHS, BETTER ACCESSIBILITY It's the small things that count. Down at Robertson Park in Indooroopilly there has been a small path worn into the grass from the car park to the concrete path. It's notorious for becoming a muddy slush pit. But now, it's fixed. It's a small thing but the 1 percenters all add up to providing better accessibility, better amenity and a better place to live.... 02.01.2022 DISABILITY PARKING: IMPROVEMENTS IN TARINGA As you've probably seen, people continue to park illegally in spaces reserved for people with disabilities. This is Oakman Park, Taringa. Up until last week, people could park here illegally but then challenge their fine, because it wasn't signposted properly. It had the massive blue logo painted on the asphalt, but not a sign.... Anyway, we've fixed it now: correct signage installed at Oakman Park. Now there are no excuses and no loopholes. Please don't park in this space unless you are entitled to; reserved spaces like this one are reserved for a reason.
