18.01.2022 Dear Class of 2020, You have faced the hardest year 12 anyone could imagine. We know that. We see that. We see the imagination, creativity, and sheer determination you have shown to add meaning to this year. We don’t know what it's like to miss our formal, or our valedictory, or our final house singing and honestly, we can't quite grasp what that would be like. Thank you for all the effort you have put into making this the best year you could. Despite being faced with the im...possible, you have somehow kept moving, kept trying and always had the energy and motivation to keep on going. You made this year unforgettable for those who watched from the sidelines. Every small push and effort you made to make this year memorable has left us proud to know that we will be your successors. We can't offer you a party, or a final assembly or even a small celebration. But we can tell you that you are seen. We can only hope to match your resilience and kindness. Thankyou. - Senior School Students

17.01.2022 Languages bringing countries together. Japan sister school, Fukiai High School students May and Moe were planning to visit Melbourne in July this year via the exchange program until Covid-19 struck. Whilst on Zoom during intense Japanese conversations, a surprise birthday celebration was held for May!

17.01.2022 The Class of 2020 Media students have done a great job creating a series of films under intermittent periods of lockdown. They have created a variety of engaging animations, dramas and documentaries, and have planned and documented them from conception to production. Traditionally the work has ‘premiered’ at the Westbourne Grammar Media night but the same conditions that required the students to be innovative in their studies, required us to be flexible in how we showcase their work. We hope you enjoy the showings and in order to retain some of the traditions of the event, please remember to vote for your favourite Year 12 Film. - Mr. Tim Horton https://media.westbournegrammar.com

17.01.2022 As the school year quickly comes to a close, we have a very special Christmas message for our Westbourne community from Reverend Steve Morrison. In a time where we would be gathered together for our Carol Service at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, our School Chaplain took some time out to record this reflection on Christmas for the Westbourne community. It was filmed in Holy Trinity at Williamstown which has deep historical ties with the school. Merry Christmas.

09.01.2022 Happiest of birthdays to Mealor Higham (Cook) who turns 100 today. Mealor is our oldest former student. We were lucky enough to visit her yesterday (as restrictions have been eased) with the 100 cards so beautifully and thoughtfully made by our students and families. She was absolutely thrilled. Her daughter Lynn McLaren made us morning tea Lynn and her sisters also attended Westbourne (Strathmore) and amazingly she and her sisters were also taught by Miss Mabel Molland like their mother Mealor.

03.01.2022 Students tackle war on waste Students from Westbourne Grammar School in Truganina are working on a project to help minimise the impact of food waste on the community. Year 9 students Sarah and Madi, who are part of a group of four working on the initiative, said the aim of their year-long project was to spread awareness of food waste. The girls said a key part of the project has involved setting up an Instagram account which contains facts, recipes and tips. We have been try...ing to inform the community on the effects of food waste and how they can make a positive contribution on our Instagram page @lovefoodnotwaste, Madi said. If we all start actively trying to reduce our food waste then the positive effects will only go up. The students have also been collaborating with a program named Eat My Garden, which encourages people in the community to grow their own produce and share it with others. Sarah and Madi said the pandemic has had a big impact on their project. Additionally a large aspect of our project was going to be conducting food swaps within the local and school community but due to COVID-19 restrictions we have had to rethink this and adapt the idea to make it safe for all, Sarah said. We are aiming to resume food swaps when restrictions ease, in addition to running our Instagram account.

01.01.2022 Vale Jim Mitchell It is with great sadness and a deep sense of loss that we write with news of the death of a much revered and long serving staff member, Jim Mitchell. Jim’s service to Westbourne commenced in 1981, when he was employed by John Pascoe, first as a teacher of English and then subsequently as Head of English. In the years that followed, Jim held a variety of positions including Head of Molland House, Vice-Principal Pastoral Care and then Vice-Principal and Head o...f Senior School. For five years from 1995, our Principal was fortunate enough to work closely with Jim in her role as Vice-Principal, getting to know him as a fine educator, strongly committed to achieving the best outcomes for our students and staff. As many will know, Jim loved this school. During his thirty-one years here he saw Westbourne grow and prosper in terms of enrolments, facilities and academic success. His two children, Robert (2002) and Catherine (2004) were educated here and much of his life was centred on the school. When interviewed for the sesquicentenary oral history project, Jim’s reflections say much about all that Westbourne and the students he taught, meant to him: ‘I believe in learning. I believe there is good in every human being. I believe a school like this is unique because it’s a very happy place.’ On behalf of our community, we extend our deepest sympathies to Jim’s family. A tribute to him and a recognition of his service to the school will be organised for early next year.
