18.01.2022 Earlier this year Western Health's Chief Executive Russell Harrison introduced "I'm A Westie" badges to recognise staff who were born in a Western Health hospital - and who now work in one. Among the almost 50 staff members who are now proudly wearing an "I'm A Westie" badge are identical twins Vera Ivanovski and Vesna Karovski. Today, the sisters featured in the Herald Sun's In Black and White column. Together, they've notched up 48 years of service to Western Health. What an incredible effort, Vera and Vesna!

16.01.2022 We’re celebrating our very first Telehealth Awareness Week! Telehealth Video Call capability commenced in April as part of our COVID-19 response. It was launched in one clinic and now, just six months later, Telehealth is used by over 60 clinics across all sites and approximately 1485 video consultations have been conducted. Speech Pathologist Vanessa is pictured on a Telehealth Video Call with patient Michael.... Late last year Michael had a stroke in his cerebellum which resulted in a severe stutter. COVID-19 initially meant Michael had to have a break in Speech Pathology therapy, but the launch of Telehealth Video Call helped Michael to start attending weekly sessions again. Michael says Telehealth makes life a bit easier because I can’t drive (since the stroke) and it means I don’t have to pull my wife out of work to drive me to appointments. Thanks to the resumption of therapy through Telehealth appointments, Michael is now feeling more confident to speak with friends and family and to continue making his podcast. Long beyond COVID-19, Telehealth will continue to be valuable for our patients struggling with transportation, mobility or time. Thank you to all our clinicians and patients for so quickly embracing Telehealth. For further information about Western Health Telehealth Services please visit our website telehealth.wh.org.au.

A big thanks to Christmas Day baby Eliana, who made a special appearance at today's launch with parents Maria and Eddie. https://genv.org.au/

08.01.2022 Happy National NAIDOC Week! Throughout the week, Western Health will be celebrating NAIDOC Week and our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff members and community here in the West. ... 05.01.2022 Western Health's free CALD Assist app, which supports communication between health care workers and non-English speakers, is now available for COVID-19 screening. The CALD Assist app, developed with Australia's national science agency CSIRO, was launched in 2017 and was designed primarily for use by allied health workers and later nurses. The Victorian Government contributed $454,000 in two separate grants during the early development phase. It featured more than 200 commonly... used phrases translated into 10 languages Arabic, Cantonese, Croatian, Greek, Italian, Macedonian, Mandarin, Serbian, Spanish and Vietnamese supported by images, video and pre-recorded audio. Then, as the pandemic hit this year, Western Health saw how CALD Assist could also be a valuable tool for COVID-19 screening. Western Health and CSIRO staff spent hundreds of hours over several months developing and refining the COVID-19 module. Western Health's interpreting team, including Macedonian interpreter Lile Blazevska, put their voices to the app and also assisted with translation. Western Health Executive Director Operations Natasha Toohey said while the CALD Assist app was designed to complement not replace the work of interpreters, it had an important role to play. Clear communication is vital to providing quality health care at all times, not only during a pandemic, Ms Toohey said. Western Health is very proud of the CALD Assist app and its success in helping facilitate communication with people from non-English speaking communities, and we’re thrilled it is now equipped to guide them through the COVID-19 screening process. Victorian Minister for Health Martin Foley MP congratulated Western Health and CSIRO for innovating through the pandemic and finding new ways to support culturally and linguistically diverse patients. Western Health and all of our health services have done amazing work responding to this global pandemic and evolving how they care for and engage with patients, he said The free CALD Assist app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
