25.01.2022 HUMANS OF THE HOSPITAL | My priest placed this around my neck before I left India in 2007. It’s the god Shiva, for health, wealth and safety. I wear it sleeping, showering, all the time, and I wash it every day. I haven’t taken it off in 13 years. Every Tuesday I go to temple to read prayers. I trust in these things and life has worked out for me. I love this job. I love to help the staff and patients as much as I can, to make them comfortable and make them laugh. I’m very happy here. - Jai Mutharia, wardsman, Auburn Hospital

23.01.2022 HUMANS OF THE HOSPITAL | A patient told me that Thursday was his favourite day of week because it was the day I called to do a welfare check on him. During COVID, my phone call was the only contact some of our older patients had that week. I see elderly patients as if they were my own grandparents. It's important to take time and listen to what they have to say. Sometimes, all they need is attention - it can work miracles. That’s why I have recently joined the Behaviour Management Program at Blacktown Hospital. Often, a patient’s anxiety or challenging behaviour does not require medication. They might be in pain, or just lonely. Sometimes all you need to do is sit, listen and provide reassurance and comfort. 19.01.2022 HUMANS OF THE HOSPITAL I I’m an old fashioned family man who likes meeting and speaking to people face-to-face. I’ve worked as a security guard for pubs and clubs for more than six years and when the COVID-19 pandemic I found myself becoming more of a safety officer. This inspired me to do more. So when I heard Blacktown Hospital needed people to perform health screening at their entrances I signed up! As a father, it’s important to me to do all I can to make sure my famil...y, essential workers, and communities stay safe. I see all types of people walk into Blacktown Hospital and some of them are going through a difficult time. It makes me happy when I can make someone a little happier with a joke or just a simple smile - even with my mask on. I want COVID-19 to end but I will really miss working at Blacktown Hospital because of the people I’ve met. The staff treat one another like a family and I really like being part of this team! 17.01.2022 Dear parents, I am a bereavement midwife here at Westmead Hospital and I support those who have experienced infant and pregnancy loss. I never put a timeframe on how long someone will grieve for. ... There will be moments when you’re doing the dishes or when you see another baby that will trigger a memory and cause you to cry and remember that time. That is normal. There are many days where I will cry and grieve with you, and those days are difficult, but I make sure I never let my grief overwhelm me to the point where I can’t do my job. I always remind myself that what you are going through is bigger than my grief will ever be. You are so strong, resilient and brave. In these situations, you release a strength you didn’t even know you had. There will never be an expectation on you to forget and move on from losing a child. You don’t have to. You are still a parent. Even if your child passes away, you are still a mum, and a dad and nothing can take that away from you. We know nothing in this situation can take the pain away, but we will be here to walk alongside you. We will support you. Stay strong. Laura Tan Westmead Hospital bereavement midwife #Pregnancyandinfantloss #remembranceday

09.01.2022 HUMANS OF THE HOSPITAL | There’s a lot more to our ears than people think. It’s not just a place where you put your earrings in (however that’s important too!). There is also a middle ear and inner ear that are in charge of your hearing, balance and much more. My job is a combination of science of sound, anatomy, counselling, and even psychology. I'm passionate about educating people about their hearing, because we often take it for granted. If you are in a loud venue, go ou...t and give yourself 15 minutes of rest. Ringing in your ear is definitely a warning sound. If you have sudden hearing loss, an audiologist is your go-to specialist. Sometimes, we only have limited time to give the right treatment, and it’s important that people know where to seek help. We want you to continue being able to enjoy your favourite music. 04.01.2022 HUMANS OF THE HOSPITAL | It happened on a silent retreat where I went to learn about meditation. The place was beautiful a monastery, hidden away in a forest. One evening I was leaning against the tree, enjoying tranquility and reflecting on the events of the day, when I noticed some movement in the bush. A moment after, a little blunt snout poked through the leaves. My heart raced with excitement, but I remained still and crumbled a bit of my sandwich in front of him. Und...ecided, the animal was coming out and disappearing again in the bush. I sat still. Fifteen minutes later, a huge wombat was nesting on my lap, sniffing for more food. I would not have experienced this amazing moment, if I haven’t learned the power of gentleness. That’s what I always tell our staff at my mindfulness meditation sessions. Be gentle, don’t force events, and you will see people opening up to you. Most importantly be gentle to yourself.
