23.01.2022 * LAST DAYS * Timeline | Dora Chapman & Richard Spoehr Don't miss this important exhibition that tells the compelling story of the artistic relationship between ceramicist Richard Spoehr and his Aunt, the painter Dora Chapman. It is the first time in fifty years that this series of Dora's prints have been shown as a group.... "Timeline is the reconciliation, not only between Dora and Richard, involving that all too human story of differing opinions and temperaments building a wall between people, it is also a reconciliation between the two ways of expression through different mediums, so that they become one continuous dialogue between colour and substance." - Christine McCormack Timeline closes this Sunday at 5pm. www.westgallerythebarton.com.au

23.01.2022 FINAL DAYS | Bloom This is your last week to experience Barrie Goddard's 60 Bougainvillea drawings in all their magnificence. The exhibition closes this Sunday at 5pm. "One of my great inspirations to produce an extended drawing series of Bougainvilleas is the remarkable story of Jeanne Baret, assistant to Philibert Commerson the botanist to admiral and explorer Louis de Bougainville, who led the first French expedition to circumnavigate the entire globe (1766-1769). As a mem...ber of Bougainville’s ship’s company on this voyage, Baret became the first recorded woman to do the same. Baret was a gifted herbalist whose quest to discover, catalogue and study new plants was motivated by an interest in their medicinal rather than floral properties." 21.01.2022 Ian Hamilton | Bowerbird In 1978 Ian was awarded an Arts SA grant to study the art of the golden bowerbird. Over a two-month period in the summer of 1978-79, he completed the first of several field studies in world heritage rain forests. He has been making art based on those field trips ever since. The works in this exhibition build on work done over many years, starting with early field drawings and leading to increasingly abstract forms.... 20.01.2022 Sam Howie | Visible Silence | 5 Nov - 13 Dec Sam Howie’s contemplative paintings reference times past. He focuses on the hand drawn straight line, a basic element of drawing. The ideas behind this new body of work are anthropological in nature and represented through his use of abstract symbolism. Howie feels that the universality of the hand-drawn straight line references the visual language of the original scratched marks on rock surfaces in ancient caves as well as the mar...k-making language used by many artists today. Sam is exhibiting alongside Lucia Dohrmann and Deborah Sleeman until Sunday 12 December. www.westgallerythebarton.com.au

16.01.2022 * IF YOU MISSED IT * If you weren't able to get to Christine McCormack's highly regarded artist talk last month, here is a link to her notes: https://www.westgallerythebarton.com.au/more Christine provides fascinating insights into her work as well as that of Dora Chapman and Richard Spoehr. ... "As a very young man, Richard told me he felt that Dora was like a guru - she was never warm and inviting, though. You had to gain her confidence and by the time you did that, she didn’t want you to leave. You had to deserve her trust. It was like going into the lion’s den, he said to me. You never knew what to expect. You had to manage being with her, on her own terms. He was in awe of what Dora was doing as an artist - and she had such a strong influence on his approach to looking at colour and form in art in those formative years." Timeline | Dora Chapman & Richard Spoehr The Nirvana of Un-Named Things | Christine McCormack Both exhibitions close this Sunday at 5pm.

14.01.2022 Sue Michael | Winter "This year has afforded me time to revisit my numerous sketch books, or pieces of paper scribbled upon as a passenger on car trips, and endless notes written in the early hours of the morning in some lonely, arid outpost. I have re-investigated winter life in regional South Australia, for some systems of being will not care about our ‘mere mortal‘ worries. Little shrubs will soak up the few drops of rain, the churning winter storm waves will roll in, and... the green will softly blanket the hills once again. People will still fashion winter quilts, dry their jumpers inside, and a dog will find the most favourable place in front of the fire." 05.01.2022 Margie Sheppard | Time and Space The works in Margie's current exhibition were created during recent months of quiet meditation and isolation in the wide open spaces of the west coast of South Australia. In these large abstract paintings, spherical forms are intersected by linear elements which form new shapes floating as delicate layers, evocative of sky and seaconstants in nature. 05.01.2022 LAST DAYS for Mark Fitz-Gerald in Walk on By. "About 20 years ago, I started paying attention to marks made in concrete. 04.01.2022 Chris de Rosa & Lesa Farrant | Ebb Shoreline walks have provided inspiration and, in some cases, the actual materials for Chris de Rosa's work in this exhibition.
