25.01.2022 Last weekend from our little club there was 6 riders who attended the States Dressage Championships in Perth. On Saturday we had 4 tests ridden. In the morning we had Pas de deux, we had 2 pairs attending. Maddi and Ellysha came 2nd for test and 2nd for costume elements. Savannah and Jo came 4th for test and 5th for costume. Ellysha attended prelim freestyle, placing 5th for costume and 7th for test. Jo attended prelim freestyle, placing 5th and 2nd for her costume. On the S...ame day in the afternoon Summer came 1st in individual Prix caprilli following Shakayla 2nd. Sunday was busier and weather wasnt very forgiving. In the morning Summer attended individual prelim freestyle and achieved 2nd place for costume, 15th in test. Savannah entered Novice 2B coming 3rd, following Novice 2C coming 4th individually and 2nd as zone team. Maddi entered prelim freestyle coming 2nd for her test and 18th for her soaked costume. Maddi entered prelim 1B coming 3rd. Ending day with the Stuart Harkness where Maddi and Ellysha came 15th. Ellysha competed in the prelim 1B and came 5th. Everything doesnt always go as planned with puddles and muddy conditions Summers horse trying to avoid puddle unfortunately stepped out from arena and got eliminated and we are waiting for the arrive of Shakaylas 1B results. Well done all riders! You all rode beautifully despite of miserable rainy Sunday. Special congratulations to Shakayla for first attempt at states. Behalf WPPC team I would like to thank all riders who entered and their parents, thank you for all volunteers, coaches and supporters. Thank you all sponsors and judges. Without your support, effort and time those events wouldnt be possible.

22.01.2022 - Pony Club WAs Think Twice Be Nice Campaign. We want to build a culture that encourages members to act with integrity, empathy and ...tolerance. Often, we find ourselves in a situation where we are upset, angry, annoyed or frustrated. Words, both written and verbal, can hurt and have long lasting effects. Before speaking or writing take a breath, count to 10, is a response necessary, is there a better way of solving this problem? 20.01.2022 Safety Tip Here's a handy road safety tip that is quick and easy to do. Even though your float may be white, that makes very little difference to how easily it ...is seen at night. You can make your float highly visible with five metres of self-adhesive reflective tape from a hardware store, like Pam Brookman did in this photo she has shared with us. Pam rode with Meningie Pony Club in the early 1960s where she got her D and C Certificate. She says that in those days, nobody even thought of reflective stuff on floats. In fact, most ponies came in the farm trucks if they weren't ridden to the grounds, and every Pony Club venue had to have an unloading ramp. Don't just think it is a good idea, why not get out and brighten up your float for night travel or grab some extra tape and make it an activity at your club or centre. Thanks Pam! #horsesafety #roadsafety #safeontheroad

20.01.2022 Horse people are the 'go-to' for anyone asking where they can go to ride. Now you can recommend riding schools that meet Pony Club Australia accreditation stand...ards. All of our Pony Club Accredited Centres meet our minimum requirements for coaching, safety, facilities and welfare - and they cater for riders from 5-80! Your family and friends can become Pony Club Australia Centre Members and work through the same syllabus at a Pony Club Accredited Centre that you do at Club - so you can still share the Pony Club experience together. 20.01.2022 5 Reasons Why Most Horses Should Slow Down When you put your leg on, your horse only goes faster. Instead of lengthening his stride, or using his back better, he goes faster faster faster. If this sounds familiar, you might want to slow your horse down. Heres why.

19.01.2022 Pause to Remember On Remembrance Day 2020, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause for a minute’s silence to remember those who sacrificed ...so much in war for our peace and safety. It is fitting we remember our wonderful Walers too during WW1 Australia committed around 130,000 horses and New Zealand over 8,000. The term ‘Waler’ was first used by the British in India referring to those horses that were bred in the colony of New South Wales. By 1867, the Waler had developed a reputation as one of the finest cavalry horses in the world, and battles like the charge of the Lighthorse at Beersheba in 1917 made legends internationally of our homebred, outback-toughened horses. Their feats of endurance and bravery on the battlefield during WWI are hard to imagine the horses often did not drink for days and had limited food rations and they proved tougher than camels in the desert. There were also artillery horses, the pushers and pullers, often the unsung heroes of the battle ground. Daisy and Belle were a pair of Walers who saved their driver, a man named Banks, when he fell into a shell-hole and became stuck in the mud. No one was around so Banks called out to his two trusty horses. ‘Here Daisyhere Belle’ Then ‘Left DaisyBack girl, back!’ Daisy came to the rescue by turning her rear towards her master until he could grab a hold of her tail. Using all her strength, she gently pulled Banks free. (Forgotten heroes: the Australian Waler Horse, pp. 49-50). Sadly only one horse returned to Australia. The horse, named Sandy, belonged to Major General William Bridges who was killed at Gallipoli. After the war Sandy spent the rest of his days out to graze at the Central Remount Depot at Maribyrnong, Vic. For ANZAC Day this year, we invited Pony Club members to send in photos of their 'Driveway Tributes' during COVID-19 lockdown. You may enjoy viewing it again on this special day. https://youtu.be/2W0B84ztKp0 #walers #pcaremembranceday #australianwalers #remembranceday Photos: Victorian Art Gallery, Murrumbateman Pony Club, Australian War Memorial.

17.01.2022 Tight Noseband? A poorly fitted bridle can give your horse as much discomfort as a poorly fitted saddle or bit. Bridle fit influences breathing and biomechanics... potentially changing the way the horse moves and performs. Read the article: https://horsesandpeople.com.au/tight-nosebands-a-feel-good/ Natascha van Eijk from the ICPBC explains why tightening nosebands feels good in the short-term but damages the horses training and performance long-term. #twofingers #loosenup #horsesandpeople #ethicalequitation

15.01.2022 Its PCA Crafty Tuesday and now that coats are shedding we thought you might like to make a scratching post for your horse. All you need is a brush, broom head ...or even a doormat and something solid to attach them to. You can tie large broom heads to trees with twine for a quick, temporary set up (handy if you agist) or get to work with hammer and nail for something more permanent. Remember not to attach the scratchers to something you dont want your horse to bend, or anything where your horse might get their tail or legs caught (so avoid fences, gates or shelter/stable walls). 08.01.2022 ' "" "". "' 80 " "' "... " ' , " How many of us have said something similar to the above? I have uttered every single one of these phrases, and then some. The worst one was when I won a 80cm SJI Championship - I felt so proud, and then this small voice in the back of my head said " ' , ' 80". Today I'm here to tell myself and everyone else that we need to stop saying "only" and "just" when we talk about our efforts and achievements. We work damn hard. We show up in the early mornings, late at night, in rain wind and hail. We worry about our horses' feed, we get physios vets and farriers to mind and monitor them. We read everything on the internet to better educate ourselves, and we get lessons to become the best we can be. We care deeply about our horses and work hard to ride them the best we can. We ride and compete at a level that we are capable of, and that is safe for us to have fun and be competitive at. So no, we are not "just" doing a certain level or class. We worked hard and we have every right to be proud of the journey it took to get there, and of our achievements. There is no threshold for qualification to be considered a "real" rider or competitor. If you enter an arena at A and proceed down the centre line, you are doing dressage. If you enter an arena and jump a course of fences, you are showjumping. If you do a dressage test, jump a course of fences, and go cross country, you are eventing. Do not diminish the work, love and care that you put into this sport. Do not minimise your accomplishments, or belittle what it's taken you to get to where you are today. When you say "just" or "only", you don't just minimise your own accomplishments or put yourself down, you also set an example to others that they too are "just" and "only". You are not "just". You are not "only". You are. So go do it. Enjoy it. Smash it

04.01.2022 Another surprising fact from "Horse Brain, Human Brain" -- We are less sensitive to touch than our giant four-legged friends are. The average horse weighs 50 mi...llion times more than the average fly, but immediately feels the pest settle on his body. A hypothetical human with that degree of sensitivity would feel the weight of five unseen dandelion seedssomething real humans cant do. Thanks to my wonderful publisher, Trafalgar Square Books, for the cool photo!

04.01.2022 REVERSE LOAD OR REAR FACING FLOATS People ask me why I travel all my horses facing the rear of the float or truck so I thought I would explain this in deta...il. Horses by nature, have a dislike for small or confined spaces. They are a live, breathing animal with emotions like fear and anxiety. When they feel threatened and scared, their instinct is to flee. So now lets picture your horse, standing in a float, looking forward, or in an angle load float, facing the drivers side, watching the traffic come toward them. They are looking out the window at fast cars, B-Doubles, headlights, and emergency lights racing toward them at 100 kph. They have not evolved over 10,000 years looking at these things, and they dont cope at all with them. Sure, many may not show any anxiety, because again, over the last 10,000 years, the horses that did show anxiety, became a target for predators, and were eaten. So those that showed anxiety were eaten, the ones that were able to hide it, kept on breeding. So here is your horse, facing forward, assessing every object coming toward them, deciding if it is a threat to them or not. To flee or not to flee that is their question! But then, they realize, they CANT flee if they need to. They want to turn and run, to flee, but cant. They are trapped. The hidden anxiety levels rise dramatically, and we now get walking around, weaving, pawing, scrambling, and other problems like sweating and stomach ulcers. You get to your destination and open the front of the float to untie them, looking around for any injury during travel. You walk to the back of your float and let the tailgate down. You make another quick assessment to see if they have hurt themselves during travel. You then wait for the right time to open the rump bar, being very careful in case you get kicked or stood on, and wait to see if they will come rushing out and bowl you over, or back out quietly, or even the occasional one who refuses to come out at all. Many come rushing out, looking around doing a very quick assessment of their new environment, looking for the lion that could jump out from a hidden spot, to eat them. Sure, there are no lions around to eat them in our modern world, but your horse did not get that email, remember it is their evolved state of mind. They feel like they finally escaped this 100 kph bullet that has been stopping them from turning around to run away from all these things that may have been attempting to kill them. Remember, this is how THEY feel, not what you know. Now lets put that same horse in a rear facing float that faces the passenger side. Your horse walks in and turns around to be tied up. This is not hard to teach. I have even taught my bigger horses to back up the tailgate into the float. You tie them up, close the tailgate and off you go. Your horse looks out the window on the passenger side and sees paddocks, green grass and trees, or if in suburbia, a front garden of a house, or a slow-moving truck that they are passing. They make a quick assessment of whether this object is a threat or not. While doing this, they notice this object is leaving, or moving away. It is backing off and going away. It is no longer a threat. Your horse can relax. There is nothing coming straight toward your horse, nothing to threaten your horse. No assessments from your horse as to whether he will live or die. There is now no desire to turn and run. Your horse soon realizes that there are no more life-threatening situations to assess and he can relax. Your horse can relax, lower their head (drainage) and watch the world go by, having a quiet nibble on a hay net. No desire to turn and run, no elevated heart rate, no scrambling, walking around, crib biting and the list goes on. You arrive at your destination, lower the tail gate, and there is your horse looking at you and their new environment. Your horse is looking at you and watches you open the divider. You are at their head, not the dangerous kicking end. You untie them easily because they are definitely not going to pull back to go further into the float. You are at their head and can control any forward movement easily. They walk out quietly and calmly no more rushing out backwards. The end result a happy relaxed horse and a safe relaxed handler. Its the perfect start to your ride, event or competition. Now some of you may ask, why not face them toward to middle of the road, because the float will tow better, due to the camber of the road. Having spent a lifetime in the heavy vehicle transport industry I certainly understand your question. Here again it is more important to think of the comfort of the horse, than tyre wear or towing characteristics. Your float may (or may not) look like it is drifting a fraction to the passenger side. The more severe the camber of the road, the more it will look like it is drifting. The difference between the towing characteristics of facing your horse toward the middle of the road, or toward the passenger side is minimal, and most drivers will barely notice this difference. But your horse will really notice the difference. Facing the drivers side, your horse has vehicles swishing past their head, and they are standing slightly up hill, again depending on the camber of the road. Now think back to every time you see your horse resting in the paddock. They are standing down hill because they are most comfortable when 60% of their body weight is on their front legs, and 40% on their back legs. This is how your horse likes to stand in a relaxed state, so lets replicate this in your float. If after reading this you feel converted, but cant find a rear facing float, dont worry. There are many people who have experienced the benefits of rear facing floats, and more of these floats are becoming available as people upgrade. The racing industry are leading the change because it is safer, particularly around highly strung young horses. Change from old thinking is always slow because people are scared of change. If you can afford a new float, be courageous and get a rear facing float built. If not, adapt the angle load float that you have. I promise you that you will never regret it.

03.01.2022 On this evening 20 years ago we were full of excited anticipation, knowing tomorrow, unbelievably we were going to open the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. With a li...ttle known 7 year old horse who was bought as a companion for our Stallion Jamieson. Ammo, (registered as Woomera, born in Narrabri ) had been to one local dressage event and had given a few riding lessons in the school. On the night of the Opening Ceremony the whole of Australia and the world rode on his back. Surprisingly, there was no back up horse! This was a great concern, because what if he was injured or just decided he wasnt interested anymore!! The brief was for Ammo to gallop onto centre stage and Rear up so Steve could crack his whip, signalling the opening of the 2000 Olympic Games. Its sounds pretty easy...except horses are creatures of habits and multiple secret rehearsals in the early hours of the morning, so the media could not catch on, meant Ammo knew his job. It was easy .......Gallop in from A - Stop at B - rear then gallop out through the exit. Three nights before the big night Ammo did a perfect rear, standing up, punching the air with his front feet for what seemed like minutes. Of course the creative crew went berserk, excited because artistically that was exactly what they wanted! Not much pressure on us to deliver But this was a horse with a mind of his own, ridden by a human with an amazing amount of pressure to deliver a perfect picture of the iconic Australian stockman. On the night Ammo was pumped, the crowd was electric and he felt it. In the Vom (Entrance tunnel) where he stood, the roof was very low and he was so tuned he was trying to rear in the small space. Not good if Steves head was crushed! So the amazing stage managers feed him biscuits procured from the green room to keep his feet on the ground. Then the count down, the thousands of people chanted ........ 5-4-3-2-1 and Ammo exploded at full gallop, Steve was worried he wasnt going to stop and might end up in John Howards lap! But he did stop and after an initially half rear went up a second time. High in the air with all his weight on one foot. Steve cracked the whip and off they went. Followed by the most amazing ceremony designed by Ignatius Jones and David Atkins!!! This incredible depiction of the relationship between horse and rider has become, and will remain, an iconic image in Australians history.

02.01.2022 "" "". " 80 " " "... " , " How many of us have said something similar to the above? I have uttered every single one of these phrases, and then some. The worst one was when I won a 80cm SJI Championship - I felt so proud, and then this small voice in the back of my head said " , 80". Today Im here to tell myself and everyone else that we need to stop saying "only" and "just" when we talk about our efforts and achievements. We work damn hard. We show up in the early mornings, late at night, in rain wind and hail. We worry about our horses feed, we get physios vets and farriers to mind and monitor them. Do not minimise your accomplishments, or belittle what its taken you to get to where you are today. When you say "just" or "only", you dont just minimise your own accomplishments or put yourself down, you also set an example to others that they too are "just" and "only". You are not "just". You are not "only". You are. So go do it. Enjoy it. Smash it
