25.01.2022 As trees grow, they grow in height and width. You can tell the age of a tree by counting the rings. The annual growth of a tree can be measured by the distance between the growth rings. As the growth rate slows down in the winter months, the new layers of wood cells are smaller and packed more closely together forming a ring which is darker in colour than the wood grain at a faster rate earlier in the growing season. ... #timber #wftnqld #womenintimber #womensupportingwomen #womeninforestry #tradielady #makingitforqld #buyqldtimber #timberqueensland #timberindustry #knowledgeispower #timbergrowthcircles #thanksgooglephotos #timbermerchant #timbermill #hardwood #softwood #brisbanebuilder See more

19.01.2022 #Repost @passing.time.qld with @get_repost Southport War Memorial, Anzac Park, Southport. Today we are looking at the Southport War Memorial which shows its original location compared to todays location. This is one of the many memorials that we remember those who have fallen.... "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them." The War Memorial Committee had informed council in late 1921 that they planned on erecting a memorial in memory of those who had fallen in The Great War. The committee asked for permission to erect it on Jetty Hill on the Southport foreshore, but council had decided that it should be erected on the esplanade at the end of Nerang Street. Council had then donated 50 towards the project with the remainder to come from community donations. The memorial was erected by Brisbane stonemason A.L. Petrie and was the third to be erected on the South Coast that contained the image of a digger. It was unveiled on April 25th 1922 (exactly 98 years ago) and contained large marble tablets on each side listing names of those who served in the war. It was initially located at the end of Nerang Street and had two German war trophies placed on either side. Those trophies were a 170mm German trench Mortar No. 6392 and a 77mm German Field Gun No. 2715. In 1938 the Southport Town Council moved the Southport War Memorial and trophies to Jetty Hill to allow for more space along the foreshore and on the road to the Southport pier head. It is believed that at this stage both of the trophies were removed, with one ending up at a military premises in Brisbane and the other used as a target during training exercises during World War II. Jelly Hill was later renamed Pier Hill and eventually to Anzac Park. In 2010 during the redevelopment of the Southport Broadwater Parklands the memorial was dismantled a second time, restored by J.H. Wagner and Sons of Toowoomba, then relocated to the former Southport Beach Park. The name Anzac Park was also relocated to this location. See more

12.01.2022 #Repost @nawic_qld with @get_repost NAWIC Qld continues to advocate for women in non-traditional roles. Casey Bell is one of 16 women currently working on the Exemplar project in Cannon Hill. This project is backed by the Department of Housing and Public Works and is seeking to close the gender gap, aiming for a 20 per cent female workforce.... I’ve worked on a few smaller projects around Brisbane but the atmosphere on a project like Cannon Hill is very different and exciting to be a part of, Casey said. The industry can be daunting for women because it’s so male dominated but choosing this career has been the best decision and it would be great to see more women embrace construction. 08.01.2022 #Repost @passing.time.qld with @get_repost Township of Esk/Gallanani, Queensland. The township of Esk can be traced back to 1830 when Captain Patrick Logan surveyed the area. This led to the establishment of copper mines called Eskdale and Cressbrook Creek, which also led to the formation of the town. During the 1940s settlers were moving into the region, but it wasnt until 1872 that a township was established. This town was called Gallanani, which is believed to possib...ly be the name for the eastern swamp hen. In 1874 a post office opened and it was called Mount Esk Post Office. In 1875 Mount Esk State School had opened and in 1876 St Andrews Presbyterian Church was constructed, then the Post Office was renamed Esk in 1881. In 1884 two sawmills were established in the area, followed by the Brisbane Valley Railway being extended from Lowood to Gallanani in 1886. While the town was named Gallanani, the station was named Esk. Also in 1886 the Anglican Parish was formed and for their first few years they operated out of the non-denominational Union Church (St Andrews). The following year in 1887 the school was renamed Esk State School. In 1889 Ellen Webb donated land to the Anglican Church for the construction of St Agnes Anglican Church. The building was designed by Brisbane diocesan architect John Hingeston Buckeridge. In 1902 a rectory and hall were added to the St Agnes grounds. By 1904 the butter factory had just opened adding more industry and jobs to the area. Also in 1904 the Brisbane Railway was extended 19km from Esk Railway Station to Toogoolawah. By 1912 Gallanani had become a primary township in the Brisbane Valley region and the Esk Station was busy transporting freight to Brisbane such as pigs, cattle, timber and condensed milk. In 1913 the town was officially renamed Esk. Sadly by the 1920s the timber industry was declining. During the 1930s Esk and the Brisbane Valley Railway were heavily used during the construction of the Stanley River Dam (named Somerset Dam in 1958 after Henry Plantagenet Somerset). In July 1941 a Lutheran church was constructed. In the 1960s the dairy industry slowed in the area. See more

02.01.2022 #Repost @shewearaustralia with @get_repost Women we should know ~ Beverley Nutley In 1973, Beverley Nutley became Queensland's (possibly Australia's) first registered female builder. ... Beverley is a chippie by trade and has been working in the industry since before 1955 when girls were ‘not supposed to do that sort of work’. She started work in her father’s business in Yeppoon before leaving school where she would nail punch the floors and clean up the building sites. Beverley says it wasn’t easy to work in the industry she was expected to do what the men did ‘if the timber had to be lifted I was on the other end no exceptions because I was a girl’. The only job she was ever exempted from doing was digging post holes (no post hole diggers in those days) but she showed those men that she could do that too. Beverley says she loved working in the industry even though it was a male environment. She gained the respect of the men by working alongside them doing what they did but never acting like a man (no swearing at all). Sometimes there was heckling but she just ignored that. As a pioneer female carpenter, Beverley is a huge supporter of women working in nontraditional industries and encourages all young women to ‘try a trade’. She strongly believes that Construction offers lots of hidden rewards for women, and more girls need to be encouraged into work across the construction industry and other related trades. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ A huge thank you to Rad Desic for telling us about Beverley's trail blazing story.
