08.01.2022 Rural Aid announced the winners of their inaugural Spirit of the Bush photo competition, the organisation put the call out for photographers to send through their best visualisation of the Spirit of the Bush. First place was awarded to Kristin Walsh (black and white image) from the NSW Riverina town of Gerogery. So much of the strength of the bush starts with family and a generational love of the land, and we thought this shot was a striking depiction of the theme. Secon...d place was awarded to Bunderra Cattle Co with their photograph of the ubiquitous wide, flat land that is seen in so much of the Australian landscape, and a silhouette of a family in front of a spectacular sunset. Congratulations to everyone and enjoy your prizes, these images are spectacular. If you would like to donate, support or find out more about Rural Aid and what they are doing for rural communities find out more here: https://www.ruralaid.org.au/

05.01.2022 ISOLATION RISK FOR MID NORTH COAST - NSW SES Up to 1,000 people are facing isolation in the coming days as dangerous floodwaters swamp roads and bridges aro...und #Taree, #Wauchope, #Wingham and #Laurieton. Persistent rain combined with recent storms has filled already saturated rivers and creeks, causing some communities to be cut off around the Manning, Lansdowne, Hastings and Camden Haven catchments. NSW SES Northern Zone Commander Chief Superintendent Steve Patterson says that it’s not over yet with the possibility that rivers and other watercourses might rise rapidly over the coming days. This means that there’s the chance roads and bridges could be flooded, but also areas next to rivers such as camping grounds, said Ch Supt Patterson. Both residents and holiday-makers must be aware of the area that they’re staying in and know their flood risk. Most importantly, never drive, walk or ride through floodwater. You put yourself and your family at risk, not to mention the NSW SES volunteers and other emergency service personnel who have to come to your rescue. The NSW State Emergency Service is advising that: If your property is at risk of inundation, please raise moveable items, such as furniture, as high as possible onto benches or tables, placing electrical items on top If you live in a low-lying area and are advised by an emergency services officer to evacuate, please do so Secure outside belongings and before leaving; turn off the power, water and take essential medicines and clothes with you Consider the impact of possible road closures and flood isolation on (health and safety), work, family, and educational commitments If you require emergency help, call the NSW SES on 132 500. www.ses.nsw.gov.au
