25.01.2022 Do do de doot doot doot dooooo! Today marks 100 days of 'daily dips' which, roughly translated, means me throwing myself into the ocean right at this spot, every day. Did I really do it every day for 100 days? No. I missed a few while I was away, and there were a couple of days early on in the piece where I totally forgot about jumping in. On days like those, I had to resort to jumping in my backyard pool at night. Not fun, which brings me to the point ...of this post-100-day celebratory post. A funny thing happened on the road to today... In the midst of becoming a human teabag, I realised: - I bloody well AM the kind of person to swim every day (in the beginning I kept assuring everyone that it was MOST unlike me and that it probably wouldn't last) - Which means... I could also be 'the kind of person to...' do a lot of things I've always thought were reserved for others - And by this time next year, I'll be at my halfway point - as in, I'll still have an entire life ahead of me - another 45 years fingers crossed - Which means, phew. No need to panic about progress. How cool is that? It's usually as I'm flapping about in the ocean that these kinds of thoughts come to me. Today, for example, I said to myself 'it's warmer in than out.' And then immediately turned that thought into a business analogy. I do that. A lot. I knew Mia @campain_del_mar would be stopping by here to check on me. And so I had a little chuckle because I realised it IS warmer in than out. Solo business lyfe is so much better when you surround yourself with awesome peeps who are there to see you shine. Ask me anything about the logistics of ocean swimming in the comments - there's not a lot to unpack, but I know you're dying to ask. Thx @hollyshoobs @lozonya and @reneecollocott for getting me here!

24.01.2022 Well, these past few days have been intense, to say the least. As a communicator, I'm like a cat watching a goldfish. I just can't peel my eyes away from the responses to the COVID-19 crisis. As per usual, I've been quick to listen and slow to speak, but I feel the need to get what I've witnessed out of my head and into yours. You might find these observations useful. Ya might not. Firstly, THE GOOD:... I've seen fast, proactive communications - not only by the big corporates but also, surprisingly, by many of the small businesses and sporting groups among us. My advice: speed trumps perfection in times like these, so even though the comms might not be A1, you need to initiate if you can. You don't have to have all the answers, but give what answers you can. And don't be afraid of making mistakes - the majority of people are forgiving. I've seen offers of assistance and shifts in business that are truly inspiring. It's heartening to see even small operators adapting where they can to help clients or communities. Believe me, it feels damn good helping someone out when they're in need. Takeaway tip: Think about who you can help and in what way. Did you know the owners of Dior and other major cosmetics brands began making hand sanitiser for hospitals instead of luxury fragrances two days ago?! Brilliant! Then there's THE BAD: Icky. I've seen businesses going into defence-mode/self-protection-mode at the expense of others. 'There's nothing to see HERE!' Hmm, maybe, but how 'bout you just refer to points 1 and 2 above, anyway. And finally, ugh, the ambulance chasers, with their virus-blocking elixirs or their 'sage' and oh-so-timely business advice that can be YOURS for only Seriously, no. Stop. Don't be that douchebag. I've run out of characters, dammit! I'll leave you with this: digest what you need to (from a reputable source), then act. Keep your comms cool and calm. Oh, and check your privilege because, in truth, we won't all get through this. @stephanie_n_carter See more

24.01.2022 What a day for women, America, all of us My fav section of the VP’s speech: ‘Dream with ambition, lead with conviction, and see yourselves in a way that others may not, simply because they’ve never seen it before. But know that we will applaud you every step of the way.’ Kamala Harris... bijoukarman

24.01.2022 With some visiting restrictions easing in NSW, I'm just popping this here as a gentle (ok stark) reminder to anyone who may be contemplating coming into my dance space: I love huggers and I don't NOT like hugs, they're just not my zone of genius. Awkward hugger. Approach with caution. FLEE HUGS @studiomatussiere

24.01.2022 Vale, Miss Dally. And thank you for teaching me how to: sit in a cab, enter and exit said cab, enter a room, exit a room, eat a sandwich, sip soup, value and respect all forms of work, do a turn on the catwalk whilst nonchalantly slinging a jacket over the shoulder, smoke (in style), and conduct a Japanese tea ceremony... #goplacidlyamidstthenoise #junedallywatkins #businesscollege

20.01.2022 Mark Ritson: "As the rest of the world ran out of sanitiser, the upmarket Danish food market Rotunden part of the Meny supermarket chain had other ideas. Setting the initial price for one Quick sanitiser at 40 krona (about three quid) it then offered any additional sanitisers at 1,000 krona (a lot of quid). It might look obvious, but it is not. No British supermarket had the gumption to realise that their EFTPOS systems, which were designed to discount multiple purchases of the same product, could be used equally effectively to prohibitively price second and third purchases at higher increments too." Um, anyone know why haven't our supermarkets done this?

19.01.2022 Dropping this here for my past clients (or any business, really), who might be stuck for words right now or baulking on their marketing. I'm here for you. What would I know? How can I help? Yes, I’m a copywriter, but before this, I spent over 10 years working in stakeholder relations with the NSW Government, so I've managed communications on LOTS of issues/crises. It's kind of killing me, in fact, to watch from the sidelines right now!... My most relevant services/skills right now would have to be crisis comms and issues management, which rolls out via: - Key messaging - Website copy - Email copy - Social media captions - Q&As / FAQs / Speaking points - Tone of Voice advice/guidance - Linkedin Bios I also have a tendency to start stockpiling ideas for better branding, blog articles, social content and PR opportunities once I get to know a client, so if any of this is the kind of thing you need, I'm here for you *elbow bump* Take care all, Di See more

19.01.2022 Reading comprehension and proof reading are important

18.01.2022 Now giving monthly to this awesome charity. ILF's purpose is to "make a difference to the lives of Indigenous families by not only gifting thousands of new culturally appropriate books with a focus on early literacy and first language - but also by running programs to inspire the communities to tell and publish their own stories." P.S. I'm well aware that some might see this as 'virtue signalling'. I prefer to call it 'arsehole repelling'

18.01.2022 I know I've got this much-loved and brilliant line around the wrong way, but let's run with it. I'm really encouraging my clients to cast their minds back to moments in time that made them. I'm talking turning-points. Epiphanies. Life-altering events, and small seismic shifts that they felt with shattering intensity right in the gut or heart. What was it? When was it? What happened next? When your brain kicked in, what did you do? How'd that work out? And w...hat then? That's how we're compiling real stories that need to be told, not contrived fabrications designed to manipulate. And note I use the plural here because we're all made up of countless stories. In real life, the path to today is so often hidden, even from ourselves, until we look back and start joining the dots. What you'll find is that each decision or move you made (especially the subconscious ones) steered you on your way to exactly where you need to be. If you're struggling to think of anything to write about your business, start with the story of you. Put aside product features and benefits for just a mo. And if you can't get the words out, or you're stuck in the weeds of it all, come sit by me. There's nothing I love more than spotting a storyline and encouraging people to start telling theirs. 18.01.2022 Keep it simple. Focus on what matters. Take what you need and no more. Blessed to be reaping the benefits of writing some copy for Marnie from @_tinyhaus - right when 2020 had me at my lowest ebb. It's definitely one of the perks of the job; going deep, getting into the topic and applying the lessons to your own life. Really looking forward to this project taking flight. Ummmm, and will you look at this space? This is Marnie's Tiny Haus - a 32sqm tiny-house - where she works, rests, plays, gardens, meditates, swims, does yoga... with a family of four. Surely there's nothing this woman doesn't know about curating a life to make room for who and what matters most. Ahhhh, I've definitely drunk the Kool-Aid on this one. #howmuchdowereallyneed

15.01.2022 So there I was, sitting on the beach, feeling some feels... when this delightful human dials up my number and showers me with these words *blink, blink* words I really needed to hear that particular day, which is one of the things I love most about working with women in business. We get each other. And sometimes that women's intuition really does its job. Thanks Kristy @skinjoybykristyjones for letting me know you loved the way I captured your story. You're even more bewdiful on the inside than out xx

14.01.2022 I posted support for The Uluru Statement here almost a year ago. Today I’m posting it again, with no commentary other than my continued support for a First Nations voice to parliament enshrined in the Constitution. 13.01.2022 Actual footage of me being asked to prep some copy for @skinjoybykristyjones. Laaaaaa About this time last year, I put it out to the universe that I'd like to write for more women in business. Well, she certainly delivered... Since then I've had the pleasure of working with such diverse and amazing #womeninbusiness. First, there was Intan @beginnowyoga, then Allysha @theorganisedboss, then Dimity (Barasa Consulting Group), and Karen @loveyourloxx, then ...Mel @detoxdelivered, Brook @brookmccarthy, Marnie @_tinyhaus, Julia and Lauren @kissthesky.creative, and now here's Kristy @skinjoybykristyjones This feels a bit like Romper Room... 12.01.2022 Here's to all the women helping others take full flight, even if they themselves have not been able to. Happy International Women's Day to the ones working in the shadows. You may not have been anywhere near a glass ceiling or taken to the streets, but you waged your own revolution with what you taught us Illustrator @stephanie_n_carter

11.01.2022 Today I did it. I went and added 'storyteller' to my bio. Throw rotten tomatoes at me if you will *boo, hissss!* but stories are where it's at. It's where connections have always been made. In stories. And telling the right stories, in a multitude of ways, is pretty much what I do. It's how I help small businesses chase big dreams. 09.01.2022 Avagoodweekend, everybody. Feeling good about this weekend's chill-fest. Copious amounts of couch time and sitting around the firepit planned. Whatchoo you got on the agenda?

09.01.2022 Add to this task list: kids at home, requiring frequent food and watering (rude of them to be so needy, really), plus fresh air and exercise. How am I going to tackle this to-do list? As best I can. This week, the plan is to take the advice Dr Maria-Elena Lukeides @thewellnessfountain gave a couple of days ago, which is to schedule time rather than tasks, because 'time limits do not require cortisol to assist us,' - time passes without our help. What do you think? Wise approach, especially given the circumstances?

08.01.2022 What a gorgeous week it's been, working on website copy for a local salon owner who's taking their business in a new direction. We started out exploring the brand's personality and culture, which led me to the right tone of voice for these guys - and of course to the substance of the content itself (i.e. the core message that needs to be communicated). The look and feel, which is now in development with @leahhillcreative, has been informed by all ...of this. The image here is from Leah's early work on the rebrand. Having worked with Leah before, I just know it's going to be divine. The tones are 100% on-brand for this #caregiverbrand If you're thinking about upping your brand game and would like me to help steer your course, let me know. I'm taking bookings for April. See more

04.01.2022 Oh hi there... well this is a bit awkward, but I feel the need to rip the bandaid off and throw my face on your feed, just to show you I am, in fact, still alive. Proof of life: I was spotted at Vitalo last Friday, chatting to Sarah-Jo Lobwein from @so_shire and Pip Rae from the @shirepod about @greencaffeen and a couple of other local legends, doing wonderful things to make the world a better place - @loveyourloxx and @tinyhaus (you can ...thank me later). If you're keen to hear what these businesses are up to, or simply to laugh at me being put on the spot, search Sutherland Shire Podcast Station on Podbean and look for the latest Bean There? Podcast ep. Later that same day (and man I hope I don't have to hand this info over for covid tracing), I popped in to see @thatsmystyle_bybernadette and her hubby about some web and brochure copy, then came home to pop my feet back in the uggies and my bottom back in the chair. If you need me, that's where I am. But actually, don't need me for a while. I'm fully booked! See more

04.01.2022 Indeed. Words do matter.

03.01.2022 "Too shy for advertising" I can still see the blue ink and the pudgy script that carried these words straight to my brain. What's good about having these words - from 1995 - still lingering in my limbic system? Today, I'm able to see the gift in them. I laugh now at how indifferent their author was and how lucky I was to stumble into the path of an adequate judge, eventually. My gift-giver was one of my earliest bosses in the business of ...communications, Helen. She took the time to get to know me. She noticed the way I worked and that although I was completely untrained, I had a little of what it takes to pull together a story. I'll never forget her belief in me or the fact she stopped to tell me about it. It was the mirror I needed to be able to see myself differently. Thank you Helen Willoughby I know I'm not the only one you've helped along the way. I'm telling this story today because yesterday I felt really powerless. But today I remembered no matter where you sit in this world, you have power. You can be an author of destruction or an agent of possibility. And so on we go. [Image description: me standing in front of a wall of books, joking with photographer @candiceleetapp that grabbing the fattest book I own will surely make me look smarter] See more

03.01.2022 Somebody was up until midnight last night thinking about a rebrand... @mintlanestudio

02.01.2022 Doing a little happy dance tonight. My client's website has gone LIVE and I can finally see my 'darlings' in glorious colour. Allysha was short on words but definitely not short on personality, or experience and expertise, which made this one an absolute treat to work on. It really does make a difference. So happy for her. I think she's pretty well booked solid for now, but if any of you guys are in the market for a Virtual Assistant, give Allysha a call. She is the epitome o...f The Organised Boss. Ba doom cha. Oh, and stellar design work as per usual from Kiss the Sky

01.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC week! Heard Lena Charles talking this morning about Clothing the Gap and decided to kick off my Christmas shopping with this little ally friendly number from @clothingthegap Will I part with it though? Probs not.
