25.01.2022 Last night I had an epiphanyI guess it wasn’t a new one, but a new reminder. It was this: Someone else’s success doesn’t equal my failure. This often comes up for me on social media. I see another business succeeding in something *similar* to what I want to be doing and I just freeze up.... I scroll by very quickly to avoid the feelings bubbling inside me. Not because I’m not happy for them - but because some part of me seems to think that when they are successful I am more of a failure. That someone else is looking at me saying, whoops, if only she’d done that differently she might have gone a little better - like that person. But it’s NOT TRUE! There’s not limited success on this planet. There’s not only one way to do something. I don’t have to be on the same timeline, journey or route as another. So, my new mantra to repeat as I see someone else SMASHING IT is thistheir success does not equal my failure. Over and over. And there’s my real talk for this Saturday morning.

25.01.2022 Do you ever feel like if you stick to the one brand style people will get bored? That if you use the same fonts or colours over and over that it’ll just get plain and repetitive? I’m here to tell you... DON’T LISTEN TO THAT VOICE!! Having a consistent and cohesive visual brand is just the opposite! It probably WILL feel repetitive to US, but we’re the one’s surrounded by it all day everyday. For your audience it’s actually BRILLIANT MARKETING. It helps them to build a feeling of loyalty towards your brand. They begin to recognise, understand and look out for YOU. Your colours, your look, your messaging. So fight the urge to change things up all the time just because you can. Sure, do a rebrand if your visual brand is no longer reflective or you or your biz BUT don’t just do one for the sake of it. Build that consistency with your audience. They’re not getting bored. They’re getting familiar and comfortable with your part of the world/internet. 23.01.2022 2020 was the first year I bought a wall calendar and planner. ACTUALLY, TWO wall calendars. Safe to say only about 10% of what is on them eventuated. Don't like things going to waste? Simply cross out the dates and enter in 2021's dates!... You are welcome.

21.01.2022 Look look look! Doesn’t it just make you so proud to see what people do with what you teach them!! Marta is one of my fabulous DIY Design My Biz students and she is just smashing it!! I just love seeing every new post she uploads - everything is so branded, clear and beautiful LunaBloom I’m so honoured to have been able to teach you lovely!... Marta was actually a design client of mine years ago (before I started teaching) - but like so many small business owners, she still needed extra graphics that she couldn’t hire me to create (there’s a lot when you think about it and it adds up! $$$) I love now that Marta has the skills to create anything she needs for her biz. 20.01.2022 What if I told you that you that even if you weren’t creative that you still had the ability to create? Seems obvious, right? BUT I talk to so many people who simply box themselves in and say - oh I’m not creative, I could never do that!... Wrong! Just because you don’t feel creative doesn’t mean that you’re not, NOR does it mean you don’t have the potential to create. Work on finding what does inspire you. Is it music, friendship, food, images, nature, numbers, movement? Find what inspires you (it might be different to anyone else you know) and give yourself time and space to sit in it! Plus, design is about creativity yes. But it’s also about logical thinking, research and gathering ideas. I personally wouldn’t call myself that creative, yet I’ve based my whole career off it. 18.01.2022 How flexible are you? Not the touching your toes kind (I can only ever get to my shins )I’m talking in your business. Flexible in terms of can you have a brainwave, and action it? Or can you be asked to run a masterclass, and easily whip up your slides? Or can you release a podcast episode and pair it with a freebie? One of the reasons I love teaching business owners how to do their own graphics (WELL) is that they suddenly have the flexibility and skills to CREATE anyt...hing they need. They can build, grow and expand so quickly. I love this example that I helped Erika with. She had a podcast episode coming out and decided a freebie to go with it would be perfect! So we created one. What if you had the skills to just whip something like this up? I’m not talking it taking you 5 days and the better part of your sanity - but from start to finish in less than an hour! The ability to build what YOUR business needs, WHEN it needs it. I think that’s pretty cool :)

Are you encouraging someone to buy a product, to book a service or event, to build connection with you or maybe to educate them? ... Your task, as the person creating the graphic, is to make sure your message is SUPER CLEAR and irresistible to your viewer. That they actually WANT to read what you have to say. Why? Well otherwise they might miss what you have to say all together! 17.01.2022 Can you actually design your logo in Canva? Or a full design you're getting printed? Or is it just for quick social media posts? In today's LIVE I'll chat you through what you can actually design yourself and some of my tips to make sure you do this WELL (and are not just wasting your time!).

17.01.2022 A common mistake when designing using headshots is positioning!! Podcast interviews, testimonials, guest speakers... we use headshots regualarly but doing it wrong can just look well...wrong! Here are a couple of tips to remember:... 1. Don't get too close! We don't need to see every freckle on their face. Make sure to include their shoulders too. 2. Don't cut off their head! It feels uncomfortable to look at and doesn't reveal their full face! 3. DON'T CENTRE THEIR HEAD! This is a very common mistake. Their eyes should be around 2/3s up the circle for it to be easy on the eyes, balances and connected. 4. Don't be too far away! We still want to connect (eyes are important for this). 5. Keep the subject centred! So, how to do it right? Sit the subject so their eyes rest around 2/3s up the circle (or square!). It's OKAY to cut off a little bit of the top of their head. Capture from their shoulders up. AND, if you have more than 1 headshot to display - make sure they're all cropped and laid out the same. It can be tricky if we're not given a good photo to work with - so just do your best of maybe ask if they can give you a photo that's more suitable. Questions? Comment below.

16.01.2022 Do you ever look around you, maybe at other business owners, and just feel deflated. You see the amazing stuff they’re doing and compare it to your own business? I know I’ve been SUPER guilty of this.... I see another biz doing a great thing, or smashing their socials, or creating a better graphic than you, or helping people better than I feel I am and I just get in a little pity hole and think, I’m not that good, and I never will be. But I want to say to you (and me) today - STOP. You don’t know someone’s journey behind the scenes. You don’t know what it’s taken to get to where they are now - to have the ideas they’ve had. You don’t know what they’ve overcome. PLUS, even if they are better than you - who cares?! You are unique. Better is in the eye of the beholder. You are you - own it instead of trying to change it. So, let’s commit to being grateful for our own journey. For our experiences, personality, those around us, our ideas (or lack of) and even our failures. Your journey is YOURS. And it’s VALID and WORTHWHILE just where it’s at right now.

16.01.2022 I could say it over and over. We need others. My business would NOT be the way it is now particularly without the help of coaches or sharing the journey with fellow business owners. We need people (who get business!!) to listen to us, to draw our ideas out, to challenge us and to help us see an angle we haven't considered before.... Don’t get stuck doing business alone. 13.01.2022 The idea of pausing work is so weird to me! I’ve taken time off before, but never this long! I’m so excited yet have NO IDEA what to expect (and I’m not sure you ever can - all babies are different anyway!) But I’m excited to stop. To take things slow. To sit with my baby and learn how to be a mum. I’m also hoping I won’t implode - my mind does love to work ... I’m already walking slower, and taking life slower. My husband commented just last week that pregnancy seems to be preparing me for motherhood. I’m usually a GO GO GO kinda person. My usual walk used to be more of an almost jogbut not any more. I can’t - my hips, my energy and my belly won’t let me. And I don’t hate it as much as I thought I would. Maybe I’ve been waiting to slow down for a while. I’m booked out until my maternity leave (and don’t know when/how much I’ll be returning to done-for-you client work). 12.01.2022 DESIGN TIP: Don't be afraid of space. Keep your graphics open and clean - this helps your design feel calming to look at and not overwhelming and off-putting. Create space by leaving a margin (at least 10% of the width of your graphic) around the outside - NO text should go past this margin.... AND by not filling every area of the graphic with images/text - leave room for your viewers eye to REST. Canva has an automatic margin that pops up when you're dragging objects around - do yourself a favour and FOLLOW IT! Fight the urge to have too much text or having your text too large or close to the edges. 10.01.2022 How do you create your visual brand? What are you mean to base it on?! It can get a bit overwhelming, hey? I love to recommend starting here (particularly if you are a personal brand - if you're not, you can put less emphasis on "what you love"). 1. What is your biz about? Are you wanting CALM graphics, or FEMININE graphics, or HEALTHY graphics...think about your business message and use colours, fonts or styles to reference this (Pinterest can help give you ideas).... 2. Who is your biz for? Who can you BEST serve? (Hint: The answer is not "everyone"). Talk to these people and ask them what kind of designs, colours, fonts, etc. that they like! 3. What do YOU love? If your biz is based a lot on the service/product that YOU personally offer - include yourself in the brand! What designs and styles resonate with you? Find the overlap of these 3 sections and you'll have a pretty good idea on a direction for your visual brand. HINT: Look for patterns of colours, fonts and styles that appear in all 3 sections. 09.01.2022 A few weeks ago Canva released a feature we've been waiting for for YEARS! The ability to curve text. You might not need it like I've done in this picture (totally going overboard!).... But maybe you need it for doing a light curve around a part of a circle, or a semi-circle of text on a logo, or curving around an element in a photo...the options are endless!! To try this feature just type out your text in Canva and tap on the "Effects" menu. Next, select "curve" and toggle the level of the curve to suit you needs! How do you like this feature? Had you been waiting on it as much as I had!? 05.01.2022 Good design doesn’t just happen by accident - it takes a lot of different building blocks working together to create graphic that truly connects with your audience and communicates your value. These are just a few of my favourites Consistency: Do all your graphics look like they’re from the same family? Can someone instantly recognise your graphic in a sea of hundreds because it looks familiar?... Hierarchy: Is your messaging clear? Have you considered the journey of information you need to take your audience on? Audience: Do you know who your business is for? Does your visual brand connect with those people? Contrast: Is your text clear? Have you got enough contrast in sizing and colour that people can EASILY read your message? Quality: Do your graphics scream I just threw this together in 2 minutes or do they look as professional as your business deserves to be? 04.01.2022 I had a scary business realisation this week... No one will do the work for me. No one is going to work out what my business needs next, no one is going to know exactly who my target audience is, no one is going to get sales for me.... Sure, they might be able to help - But really, it comes down to ME and for me to sit down and do the hard work. And that's the thing with business: it's not easy and it does take hard work. Maybe we have to be okay with... ...making mistakes ...guessing along the way ...just trying out best A designer might do all your graphics - but more often than not it's YOU need to know who your audience is. YOU need to know what your business is about. Or a social media manager might be able to create your posts but YOU need to know what your businesses goals are. YOU need to decide how you want your business to come across. Or a coach might be able to give you direction or challenge you - but it's YOU who needs to implement. YOU who need to dig deep and find the answers. Or a personal trainer might be able to tell you what exercises to do. But YOU have to be the one that does the work. I could go on BUT, I won't leave us there. This can also be empowering (really?!). It's up to US to do the work, to know our business, to make the calls. YOU ARE THE CEO. I AM THE CEO. We can't wait for someone else to solve our problems - we've gotta empower ourselves to do it. You are probably a lot more capable than you think...and if you're not? Well, you'll learn :) I hope you find this encouraging, (and not overwhelming). Business isn't an easy journey but it IS possible. Phew, that was a heavy one! 01.01.2022 Earlier this year I invested in something that was WAY outside what I thought my budget should be. Like WAY way outside. I mentioned it to my mum (aka. my book-keeper) and her jaw nearly dropped to the floor.... Investing in our business can be SCARY. And for me, it’s still scary. This investment is a year long commitment. But do you know what it’s meant? It’s meant that when I want to give up (happens on the reg), then I DON’T. Why? No other reason than I’ve put too much into this to give up now. So, be smartthink things throughbut be brave enough to take leaps in your business that aren’t comfortable. Investments that cost you something. And follow through. Make the most of that investment! Is it coaching? Is it hiring someone?
