19.01.2022 I started playing in brass bands in 1951 as a learner with the Kearsley Silver Band (Kearsley Youth Brass Band - UK), before moving to Australia in 1960, joining the Heidelberg Brass Band. I was a member of the Royal Australian Artillery Band (now Army Reserve Band) from 1964-1977, and joined Box Hill City Band in 1981. I’ve been BHCB Drum Major since 1982, served on the committee for 30 consecutive years, and also lead Kew Band (Glenferrie Brass) for 5 years concurrently, ...resulting in the 2011 national marching championship. In 2010, I was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for my service to the community through the Box Hill City Band and to mentoring young musicians. ANZAC Day has become my favourite day of the year when all of the ensembles within our organisation Box Hill City Band, Whitehorse Brass, and Box Hill Academy of Brass come together to march in the ANZAC Day Parade. It’s a special feeling you get when you turn around to see more than 30 players of all ages from primary school aged to pensioners ready to march. It just makes me think, This is Box Hill. I’ve now lead the band 100 times on ANZAC Day, and enjoy the many RSL Victoria awards the band has won. I’ve always held the belief that brass bands should help develop new talent rather than taking players from other bands, which is why I’ve always supported our Academy and have been involved with Whitehorse Brass since its beginning. At Whitehorse, I’ve played baritone, tenor horn and cornet; happy to play my part wherever I’m needed. I also love to see the young players leap-frog me, progressing into new positions. We have attracted some very good players, as well as young Academy graduates, with everyone contributing in their own way. Our supper breaks allow everyone to get to know one another. Whitehorse Brass are a happy band, and that comes across in the music. We are improving consistently and there is no ego in our band. There is so much to be learned from listening to, and asking questions of our experienced top players. I always look forward to rehearsal. It’s all fun, we have a laugh and a cup of coffee - everything is great! ~ John Kelly OAM #whitehorsebrass #whitehorsewhoswho #featuredplayer #victoriabrassband

Karakoram can be purchased through Lake Music Publications here:... https://www.lake-music.com/karakoram-bb We’re so proud of you, Daniel! 16.01.2022 Whitehorse Brass have been meeting over Zoom each week. Our players have engaged in a variety of activities including trivia nights, murder mysteries, watch parties, recitals, workshops and Q&A’s with world-class guests from the brass band world. Whilst we can’t come together in person, our members are just as connected as ever. #whitehorsebrass #victoriabrassband #boxhillcityband

14.01.2022 I learnt cornet in primary school, but baritone sax took over as my main instrument in high school, much to the horror of my brass teacher. At 15, I discovered my sax embouchure was a little more compatible with low brass which was when I joined Glenorchy Youth Brass (TAS) on baritone horn. I continued playing baritone with Glenorchy City Concert Brass until leaving Tasmania to travel overseas, and focussed heavily on my sax playing from that point on. As a classical saxop...honist, I’ve played in concert bands, sax quartets, symphony orchestras (yes, sax parts are occasionally orchestrated), and as a competitive and featured soloist. I enjoyed all of these experiences, but something was missing. In 2019, 13 years after having touched a brass instrument, I decided to satisfy the hankering I’d felt for a long time, to revisit the baritone. With no brass network in Melbourne, I posted in the Australiasian Brass Bands group on Facebook to find somewhere to try playing again. Mutual connections, and an encouraging, warm welcome led me to Broden Ford, and Whitehorse Brass. I knew I’d missed brass band music and culture, but what I found absolutely smashed my expectations. At Whitehorse, the diversity of experience is wide, but the leadership from Broden and the experienced players bring the ensemble together. We make fantastic, fun music, but it is the people that make this group so special. On an occasion I was asked to fill in conducting at short notice, I received messages from fellow players who couldn’t attend apologising that they wouldn’t be there to support me - it really is that kind of place. I’m so grateful to have been provided the opportunity to rediscover my love of brass playing and music, alongside the amazing tones and musicianship in this band. To have met people who have become some of my closest friends is something I never anticipated. I cannot wait to get back to playing together again! ~ Beau Webb #whitehorsewhoswho #featuredplayer #melbournebrassband #victoriabrassband #boxhillcityband

11.01.2022 I first encountered Whitehorse Brass when I attended an open rehearsal in 2018, when I was still very new to my instrument, the Bass Trombone. I was referred by a neighbour who was and still is a member of the Box Hill City Band. I was looking for a new opportunity to challenge myself and my playing ability. As much as I enjoyed my school ensembles, students’ commitment varied, which restricted the repertoire that we were able to play. I turned up to the open rehearsal w...ith the hope that I would be challenged, extended, and to play alongside more experienced musicians, both young and old. As I had hoped, I was very much challenged musically, but I also met many new amazing people whom, at the time, I would never have thought would play such significant roles in my development as a musician. I reckon a big shout-out is due to my stand partner Sean, who is one of the nicest and hilarious people I’ve met in my life so far, and he has been a huge inspiration to me and an overall great bloke. I have made an incredible amount of great memories with the band, ranging from Anzac Day marches to the Christmas and Anniversary concerts, and not to forget State Championships. But none of these compare to the chats that we have over coffee and biscuits during break every rehearsal. I have been playing with Whitehorse for nearly 2 years, which feels more like a decade because of the overwhelming sense of community you get when you become a part of this band. Whitehorse Brass is by no means just another band or ensemble, but more a family of incredible people who love to come together for 2 hours a week and create great music. I can safely say that the members of this band have been a significant factor in my accelerated progression as a musician and as a person. I can’t wait to spend hopefully many, many more years creating music with this incredible group of people. ~ Angus Hood #whitehorsewhoswho #whitehorsebrass #boxhillbrassband #melbournebrassband

10.01.2022 It was inevitable that I would enter the world of brass banding. My grandfather conducted the Bendigo Citizens and Boys band, which included my five uncles and my dad. Eventually my mum became the drum major leading us to multiple Australian Championships, becoming a multiple national champion drum major herself. I joined the band in 1972 on percussion and 12 months later moved to tenor horn. This was the beginning of an adventure in which I was a member of four national ...champion bands, multiple ‘Australian Brass’ bands, and the Victorian open tenor horn champion from 2003 until retirement. During this time I also conducted the Strathfieldsaye Youth Brass for 12 years, having success in several state championships and local eisteddfods. I also filled the role of senior band secretary for around 20 years, and enjoyed several years conducting a local senior band. Moving to Melbourne in 2002, I joined Kew Band where I remained until retirement in 2008 due to family commitments. In 2013, I received a call from Dr. Matthew van Emmerik who was conducting Box Hill City Band. I joined to assist with rebuilding the band, and was impressed with the running and camaraderie within the band. Unfortunately, band and family commitments again clashed as the band rose in grading and intensity, and another retirement ensued. In 2015, I received another call, this time from Broden Ford, asking if I would be interested in playing in a band that had been formed with the purpose of enjoying music and fostering talents of young musicians. The band was Whitehorse Brass, and I found the camaraderie and friendship was still very much alive. Despite the varying levels of ability, the music we played was both fun and challenging. I also have the benefit of sitting alongside my sister Karen, who I believe is one of Australia’s sweetest sounding flugelhorn players. I am very appreciative of the friendship of the members and supporters of Whitehorse Brass, and look forward to many more years to see what can be achieved. ~ Alan Davey #whitehorsewhoswho #whitehorsebrass #boxhillbrassband #victoriabrassband #brassband

09.01.2022 Since I was a little tacker I have always had a great passion for music. I started learning the trumpet back in 2011 when I was a student at Xavier College. My teacher was and still occasionally is, Christopher Eury, who is a well-known member of the Box Hill City Band (BHCB), playing the soprano cornet. Back in 2015 I wanted to join a community band outside of school and knowing that Chris played for BHCB, I was quick to ask which band he recommended. He introduced me to... Whitehorse Brass, the newly formed group within BHCB for intermediate players. From the moment I first walked into the band room and started to play with Whitehorse, I knew I wanted to stay. I started out on 2nd cornet with Whitehorse but was soon asked by Broden Ford, our MD, if I wanted to give the vacant soprano cornet seat a go. I was very quick to accept and have never looked back. I am also a member of the BHCB who recently performed in the National Championships in Melbourne (2018) and Brisbane (2019). I am currently studying a Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne, specialising in performance (Trumpet) under the tutelage of Dr Joel Brennan and previously Geoff Payne (former principal trumpet of the MSO). In the future I aspire to become a professional musician/conductor and a music educator. Ever since joining Whitehorse Brass, I have had so many great experiences. These include marching on ANZAC Day, performing at the Melbourne Show, playing at the Australian National Band Championships which were held at my own school in 2018. Being a passionate Hawthorn supporter, my most memorable moment is playing the Hawthorn Football Club song outside Jarryd Roughead’s house on live TV in front of a national audience after Hawthorn’s Premiership 3-peat. I look forward to the bright future with Whitehorse Brass. ~Sean Lambert #whitehorsewhoswho #whitehorsebrass #featuredplayer #melbournebrassband #victoriabrassband

09.01.2022 Congratulations to Beau Webb, David Sharp, Marcus Guo, John Kelly and Lauren Innes, who each represented Whitehorse Brass in the Victorian State Solo & Ensemble Championships. Beau finished 4th in a strong Open Baritone section, with John also placing 4th in the Australian Composition section. Marcus performed very well in the Under 12 Brass Instrument category - a section in which no points were awarded. Lauren finished equal 5th in a large, quality Open Slow Melody field..., with John and David also putting in excellent performances in the Open and Masters Slow Melody sections. Our best result went to Beau & Lauren, who finished in 3rd place in the Open Duet section. Congratulations to each of you - we’re very proud! We’ll be sharing these performances with you all on our social media pages over the coming weeks

07.01.2022 I was born into a talented musical family and began learning tenor horn when I was 10. Little did I know the wonderful life and opportunities that playing in a brass band would bring. So many great friendships and musical experiences, as well as personal development and team work skills. By the age of 12 I moved onto cornet, and eventually became the principal cornet of the Strathfieldsaye Brass Band/Greater Bendigo Concert Brass Band (City of Greater Bendigo Brass Band) ...in both B & A grade. I loved my time on principal cornet, which included several state and national championship titles and a CD recording, Hot Brass, that was an international release. I am proud to have been an invited member of the first ‘Australian Brass’ band, and to have been invited to the position of brass specialist teacher at Girton Grammar School in Bendigo. Fast forward many years and along came another amazing opportunity. When my son, Broden Ford, told me about his new venture starting Whitehorse Brass at Box Hill City Band, I was in! I am lucky to sit next to my brother, Alan, while I play flugel in the band under the direction of my son, and that’s just the beginning! There are so many wonderful people of all ages and musical abilities and we all have one thing in common: to enjoy making music as best we can, and have a whole lot of fun doing it. We have a culture of fantastic camaraderie, care and respect toward each other, as well as a great snack break! It’s great playing under a leader who knows how to elicit the best out of his players in the best possible way and to play with others who just want to do their very best to be part of a great team. It really makes the 125km round-trip worthwhile! Go Whitehorse! We’re on a wonderful journey! ~ Karen Davey #whitehorsebrass #whitehorsewhoswho #featuredbrassplayer #brassplayer #melbournebrassband #victoriabrassband

07.01.2022 One year ago today, Whitehorse Brass were crowned Open D Grade Champions at the 2019 Victorian State Band Championships. This was the second time in a row for the band, winning the event in 2018 as well. Whilst it’s a shame that we cannot play together at the moment, we can certainly look back proudly at our achievements and hope for many more wonderful moments in future. #whitehorsebrass #victoriabrassband #bhcb #victorianstatebandchampionships #cgradebrassband

06.01.2022 I come from a fairly musical family under the influence of my mother and maternal grandmother both are much more accomplished musicians than me. I grew up playing trumpet in orchestras and concert bands, so my son, Nate had seen me muck around with my instrument. I had always wanted my kids to learn an instrument and when we asked him whether he wanted to learn an instrument, he plumped for the trumpet straight away. Mum’s a woodwind player who has picked up various bras...s instruments late in life to keep my step-father company in brass bands. She knew that Box Hill City Band was a well-credentialed brass band and put me in touch with drum major, John Kelly. The next day I met John at the band room, and he handed me a cornet for Nate. We arranged to go along to the next Box Hill Academy of Brass rehearsal, then under the direction of Broden Ford. With the help of regular lessons from Lauren Innes, Nate progressed well. He reached the point where he was ready to advance to Whitehorse Brass, and I was soon persuaded to join him on the 3rd cornet desk. Whilst I was pretty rusty at first, it has become a great release from the pressures of work, and really valuable time for Nate and I to share together. Nate has said several times that the main reason he enjoys playing is that it’s an activity we share, so that is very special. We have had great experiences together winning our divisions in eisteddfods and two state championships, as well as a third placing in D grade at the Nationals. And we just received the news we have been promoted to C Grade. I think though, a favourite experience for both of us has been marching in the ANZAC Day Parade. I am really pleased that Nate is learning musicality and how to play in an ensemble, with a group of friendly and interesting people. We are both lucky to have bandmates of all ages who are engaging and respectful. ~ Richard Thomas #whitehorsebrass #victoriabrassband #melbournebrassband #brassplayer #cornetplayer
