18.01.2022 VALE RON GARDNER It is with great sadness that we have heard from Ron’s wife Annie Gardner today that our highly esteemed instructor Captain Ron Gardiner has passed away surrounded by his family. Ron was a legend to us at the Sailing Club and Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre where he was a Head Instructor for our commercial Maritime qualifications from 2013 until last year. Ron as head instructor was fulfilling his passion for passing on his nautical knowledge, ability, ...experience and of course sailing adventures to the many students that he taught. It was a standing joke in the training office when telephone enquiries or enrolments were received especially from the sailing and boating fraternity here and all along the coast that we know Ron Gardner - he was our Captain on Solway Lass or Camira or yes, he taught us or we have known Ron for years or they had met Ron at a party. We know firsthand that Ron was rather partial to parties and gatherings with his wife and many friends where they enjoyed playing musical instruments and having a great time. These times were recalled when Ron came in to the club rather quietly on a Monday morning. Ron’s passion for maritime commenced in 1979 where he owned and operated Rucuda Luxury Sailing Cruises at Fraser Island and Tin Can Bay. He graduated to the Whitsundays in 1988 where he owned and operated charter boats and water sports operations in Airlie and the Islands. Ron was also known to get quite excited when he was about to slip away to be the Master out of Cairns on MV Phoenix, the supply vessel to Willis Island for Australian Weather Services with several return trips per year. To Ron’s family from the Committee, staff and members it was a pleasure and privilege to know Ron as a member and friend. Our training team, Kaye, Leonie, Graham, Lydia and Instructors, Andrew Carr, Cal Callaghan, John Lathan, Adrian Bram, Doug Cross, Chris Green will look forward to hearing some more stories of Ron and telling a few. Ron’s celebration of his life has been arranged at Whitsunday Sailing Club on Thursday 26th November at 3pm, all invited, come in your Jimmy Buff et tropical apparel and become a Parrot head for the afternoon. 17.01.2022 A great article in our local paper Whitsunday Times about our very own Sailing Manager Ross Chisholm on his recent win at the Australian Sailing - Queensland awards

17.01.2022 Offshore Racing Sunday afternoon saw sun shining and a moderate easterly breeze blowing for the 11 yachts who participated in the two Whitsunday Sailing Club races on Pioneer Bay. With everyone sailing the same course, it was a chance to observe the speed difference between an Extreme 40 and a trailable yacht such as a Masrm 720. Race 1 saw the extreme 40 Back in Black (Paul Mitchell) leading away from M32 World (Michel Van Der Zwaard), with the third multihull, G’nome (Terr...y Archer) and the lead monohull, Treasure VIII (Rob Davis) heading the pursuing fleet. Close competition in the mid fleet saw Wide Load (Shannan Hart), Good Vibes (Robert Holme) and Twister (Kevin Fogarty) together, with Infarrction (Carol Roberts) and Anthea (Dewi Hughes) not far away. As the leaders completed their third laps, the rest of the fleet were still on lap 2, with Back in Black completing the 6.5 mile course in 49 minutes. On corrected time, Lama (Darren Lynch) took the honours, even though they were the slowest boat on the water, with Back in Black second and G’nome third. The second race saw the entire fleet bunched up on the starting line for a very competitive start. This time the fleet stayed much closer together, although with a stronger wind blowing, the race was generally quicker for all boats, with Back in Black dropping the elapsed time to 40 minutes, with the rest of fleet being similarly faster. Although positions on the water changed little, the corrected time results were much closer, with G’nome taking the honours in race 2 from M32 World and Back in Black. Overall winners for the day were G’nome with a third and a first (4 points) from Lama, based on a count back over Back in Black (5 points)and M32 World (6 points). 15.01.2022 Whitsunday Sailing Club headland as it was in 1974. How has this changed for you?

14.01.2022 Twilight Racing 11 November 2020 There was no shortage of wind at the start of the Wednesday afternoon twilight race at Whitsunday Sailing Club, with 18 boats lining up for the weekly competition. The waves were much bigger than is usually expected on Pioneer Bay, meaning that, for many of the sailors, it was a wet race, although getting wet in the warm water is no real disadvantage. An unexciting start to the program saw a four boat fleet of multihull yachts lining up, w...Continue reading

10.01.2022 Twilight Race 16 September After the strong winds of the past couple of weeks, the breeze finally started to moderate in time for this week’s Whitsunday Sailing Club twilight race on the waters of Pioneer Bay. Although the sky was a bit cloudy, there was no sign of rain for the 15 boats who competed in this week’s event. The highlight of the day was the clash between two super fast catamarans, the extreme 40, Back in Black (Paul Mitchell)against the smaller, but more agi...le M32 World (Michel Van Der Zwaard). Up against these two boats was the trimaran, G’nome (Terry Archer), unable to keep up on the water, but with plenty of speed. Off the starting line, M32 World initially led the fleet away, with Back in Black close on their tail. The sheer power of the extreme 40 soon had them in front, leading the way around 4 laps of the 2 mile course. Without the use of their spinnaker, the M32 had no recourse, settling for second place, finally finishing half a lap behind, while G’nome, sailing the normal 3 laps of the course, held their own, just avoiding being lapped by the second placed boat. On corrected time, however, the results were clear, with G’nome taking the honours for the day. It will be interesting to see the full potential of the M32 once it gets up to speed. A strong fleet in Division 2 saw Twister (Kevin Fogarty) leading the fleet away, but there were little to separate the fleet around the course. By the end of the first lap, Treasure VIII (Rob Davis) held a slender lead over QMS (John Galloway), with the entire fleet of 7 boats separated by less than a minute. As the race progressed, so did the separation, with Treasure VIII finally taking line honours by 40 seconds from QMS, while Twister just pipped Wide Load (Shannan Hart) across the line. Further back, there was only two seconds separating Crossbow (Mark Beale) from Good Vibes (Robert Holme). Corrected time results went Twister’s way by just one second from Crossbow, with Wide Load taking the minor placing. A smaller than usual fleet in Division 3 saw Masquerade (Tom Vujasinovic) leading the fleet away, but the weather was particularly suitable for the larger Anthea (Dewi Hughes), as they soon took the lead on the water. Masquerade slotted into second place with Lama (Daarren Lynch) in third place ahead of Masmerised (William Richards). On corrected time, Anthea held on to her lead, with Lama slotting into second place and Masquerade third. Full results can be seen at https://app.sailsys.com.au/club/85/results/series/577/races. Racing continues each Wednesday afternoon at 4:30. Limited crewing opportunities may be available at the club from 3:00pm. See more

06.01.2022 Twilight Race 9 September With strong winds in the morning last Wednesday, it was looking like the fleet may be smaller than usual, but with moderating breeze during the day it was great to see a fleet of 16 boats on the water for the start of the Whitsunday Sailing Club’s weekly twilight race. The breeze settled in around 15 knots, sufficient for many of the fleet to reef mainsails, while others persevered with full sails. Although they were scheduled to start first, the... only multihull boat on the water was Back in Black (Michael Van Der Zwaard), who misread the starting signals, crossing the starting line 10 minutes late along with Division 3. Back in Black used the opportunity as another training run for the boat and crew, as they work to hone their crew work and boat handling. A brilliant start for Wobbly Boot in Division 2 saw them within millimetres of a jump start to give them the Doyle Sails sponsored best start prize. Speaking after the race, they admitted that they knew they were close; they were either starting heroes or zeros. By the time they got to the first buoy, QMS (John Galloway) was leading the fleet, never to be headed. Twister (Kevin Fogarty) noticed a small tear in their mainsail and retired the boat, leaving Wide Load (Shannan Hart) to lead the challenge. Further back, a close tussle ensued between Crossbow (Mark Beale) and Top Gear (Damian Suckling), with just 15 seconds separating them at the finish. On corrected time, Wide Load took the honours from Top Gear and QMS. In Division 3, Anthea (Dewi Hughes) led the fleet away, initially holding off Infarrction (Paul Roberts), but eventually the Farr 1104 eventually took the lead. The surprise performer, however, was Lama (Darren Lynch), who was revelling in the stronger winds of the last few weeks, working their way up the leader board to get within 4 seconds of snatching the runner up position on the water. Anthea managed to just stay ahead of them as they crossed the finishing line, 50 seconds behind Infarrction. On corrected time, Lama took another comfortable win, their third in 3 weeks. We have a great crew and the stronger conditions suit the boat, but we will struggle in the light breezes stated Lynch after the race. Racing continues each Wednesday afternoon at 4:30. Limited crewing opportunities may be available at the club from 3:00pm. See more

01.01.2022 It's a good day to be a duck in the Whitsundays! It's looking like the rain will be with us for a couple of days so for those who have purchased tickets for New Years Eve here's a few tips to make the best of your night and don't let the rain dampen your spirits! FAQ's: - Will there be tickets available on the night? Yes! VIP is sold out but General Admission will be available on the night, the bar downstairs will be open and we'll have food trucks onsite to get some dinner... - Can I come and go during the event? YES! Absolutely! Once you have your wristband you are welcome to come and go as you please - Will the fireworks still go ahead? This is weather dependant but yes absolutely as long as it's not raining. At this stage they are scheduled for 8.30pm and midnight but should it be raining at that time we'll wait for a break in the weather and fire them off then - Is there any cover from the rain? There will be a large marquee on the front lawn as well as the undercover area but dress for the wet, think festival attire (gumboots and your best umbrella hat!) - Is there seating? We will have limited tables and chairs downstairs but you are welcome to bring a chair to make yourselves comfortable! - Will the VIP area be covered? VIP tickets have access to the restaurant and balcony so you will be covered up there but if you want to head down to the stage and get amongst the action bring a brolly - What happens if the power goes out? We've got a generator! Two actually so the show will go on! Let's send 2020 out with a BANG! https://whitsundaytickets.com.au/event/new-years-eve-12154 See more
