11.01.2022 They have been apart for almost a year but the youngsters from Great Beginnings Epping and the seniors from Epping Gardens next door were not going to let the Covid Grinch disrupt Christmas. With a strict safety plan mapped out, old and young picked up where their musical get-togethers had left off, with Christmas carols and the joyful clanging of drums, bells and maracas. A few tears were shed but the mood was merry and bright even though the two groups had to remain safely ...separated by a fence. While Great Beginnings Epping survived the two waves of the pandemic without incident many of their activities were curtailed. Parents remained outside for drop-offs and pick-ups, excursions and in-centre visits were cancelled and musical gatherings with the residents of Epping Gardens were halted. But that was nothing compared to the challenging year at Epping Gardens where residents endured months without contact from family and friends and then the second wave emergency. Great Beginnings Epping Centre Manager Celia Mu watched with concern as the situation worsened next door. It was such a sad thing to witness, she said. We had been making regular visits to Epping Gardens for over a year and come to know many of the residents well. The children had formed closed bonds with the residents and throughout the year they sent messages of love and hope just to assure them that they were not alone. But a week ago a group of residents sprang a surprise. In wheelchairs and walkers they arrived at the gate to Great Beginnings just to say hello to their young friends on their regular walk. The children were delighted and that’s when it was decided to celebrate old friendships and newfound freedoms with a Christmas singalong. The children were so happy to see them and wanted to do something special together for Christmas, Celia said. They have been busy making beautiful cards to give to them at the party and although we have to keep the children and visitors separated, we are all just happy to see each other again. It is so lovely to watch the older people light up when they see their little friends and the children who don’t see their grandparents often get a lot out of the experience. There will be a time when we can go back to regular visits. It’s not yet but this is a moment we will all cherish. Pictures: Tim Carrafa See more
