22.01.2022 WHM volunteering at Abbeyfield in Ashwood! Abbeyfield Australia is a national not-for-profit community housing provider and the peak body representing 26 independent Abbeyfield Societies in towns and suburb across Australia. All Abbeyfield accommodation (house and hostels) are operated on a not-for-profit basis by local communities as a local solution to a local housing need. Waverley Helpmates took the opportunity to volunteer at Abbeyfield in Ashwood and worked at a much n...eeded project. With the help of a team of Waverley Helpmates participants and staff, an unused area in the house was transformed in a well constructed courtyard. It was a great day teaching our team new skills. Above all it was a very rewarding and tangible contribution to the Abbeyfield community in Ashwood who will benefit from the newly created space. We look forward to maintaining involved! See more

11.01.2022 Today is Global Autistic Pride day and we had the privilege of Chris Varney from I CAN Network presenting to our Waverley Helpmates team. Chris is the founder and CEO of I CAN Network which has 60 Autistic staff and 1,500+ students in the program nationally. Growing up with Asperger’s, Chris was inspired to start I CAN in 2013 from the support of his family, schools and mentors gave him. It was a fantastic morning where Chris shared his life experiences, and lots of motivating and insightful advice. We all felt inspired! The Autistic Spectrum is only a different way of thinking, not limiting capabilities. Dream big, pursue your dreams, and when people tell that you can’t, be defiant YOU CAN. Chris is living proof of all things possible
