25.01.2022 Waterspouts & a Pan Pan Mackay to Middle Percy Island Friday, 11th to Tuesday, 15th October 2019 We departed Mackay Marina at 08:00 on an overcast, drizzly day. The wind quickly picked up to 15-20 knots and the seas were rough and confused. We motor-sailed hard on the wind heading for Curlew Island. Before long, the wind increased to 20-25 knots and the sea state became very messy as we bashed our way south. About an hour from Curlew, we dropped all sails and continued very s...Continue reading

19.01.2022 Port Clinton to Gladstone via GKI and the Narrows Tuesday, 15th to Sunday, 27th October 2019 After a few quiet days at Perforated Point, which included a beach clean-up, it was time to use the northerlies to push us down to one of our favourite destinations; Great Keppel Island. We had an uneventful motor-sail in 8-10 knots and arrived at Long Beach at 15:00. It seemed everyone else had the same idea. We estimated there were around 45 boats already anchored, including Cat M...agic. Once again, we enjoyed a fun karaoke night onboard their boat. Ken & Bev on Charm, plus Rob & Karen on Chill, arrived the following day. We all met up for sundowners on the beach that afternoon, before moving around to Fisherman’s Beach on Sunday. We were looking forward to catching up with Shane & Dot, who own Tropical Vibes, and enjoying one of the best burgers on the coast. On Monday, I caught the ferry across to Rosslyn Bay to get a few supplies whilst Bob stayed with Whoosh. The wind had picked up by the afternoon, which made for a rollercoaster of a ride back. The following morning, after collecting Chill’s Cole’s on-line order from the ferry, we moved around to Svendsen's Beach to get a little more shelter from the south-easterlies. On Wednesday morning we walked Robbie’s Track with Chill and then in the afternoon the four of us dinghied to the old shearing shed and homestead. We also added our own buoy to the buoy tree on Second Beach. The anchorage had become quite rolly, so we moved back around to Fisherman’s Beach on Thursday. Over another burger and drinks at Topical Vibes with Chill, we made the decision to leave the following day in order to transit through the Narrows on Saturday morning. We said our farewells to Shane & Dot and prepared Whoosh for her next passage. It was a gentle motor-sail in 10-12 knots from the north for most of the journey. The wind picked up to 15-20 just as we were coming in to anchor! We were hoping the wind might keep the midges down, but no such luck. Even with Whoosh fully screened, they found their way inside. By morning, we were covered in bites and scratching like crazy. Time to get out of there. We pulled the anchor up at 07:05 to ensure we were near the top of the tides when going over Ramsay’s Crossing. The least depth we saw was 1.4m under the keel on a 5m tide. It was a perfect morning for gliding gently through the mangroves towards Gladstone. We arrived at the marina late morning, along with Chill and several other boats. On Sunday we took the courtesy bus to Stockland’s to re-provision and then departed the marina the following morning for Pancake Creek. See more

19.01.2022 Happy Bay to the Newry Islands Saturday, 28th September to Monday, 7th October After a peaceful night at Happy Bay and the promise of some light northeast winds, we departed at 07:20 using the flood tide to push us through the Narrows at up to a maximum of 10.5 knots! It was a very calm day, though we did manage to sail the last hour to Billbob Bay on Shore Island. With just one other boat in the anchorage, it was incredibly quiet and peaceful. The night sky was the best we...’d seen in a long time. On Monday morning we moved across to the beautiful southeast anchorage on Thomas Island. Spirit joined us later that day. We swam, walked and had the usual sundowners on the beach. With the wind forecast to return to the SE on Tuesday, we motor-sailed down to Goldsmith Island in a light breeze. Stan & Trish on Zoo were already anchored there, whilst Cat Magic arrived in the early afternoon. We were joined by a trimaran soon after. The wind was due to increase to 25+ knots over the next few days, so we were happy to be in a well-protected anchorage with friends. We had a great three days with beach walks, sundowners, pot-luck dinner on Cat Magic, morning tea on Zoo and a beach BBQ and bocce on our last day. On Saturday morning we all went our separate ways, with our destination being the Newry Islands where Spirit was anchored. It was one of the best sails we’d had this season with 10-15 knots on a beam reach with all white sails up. After a few days relaxing at the Newry’s, we will head into Mackay Marina tomorrow for the usual top-up of stores, fuel and gas. See more

18.01.2022 Maggie to Airlie Beach Friday, 6th to Saturday, 28th September 2019 After a very social second week on Maggie, it was time to continue our journey south. It had been great to catch up with As If, First Contact, Cat Magic, Lionfish Safari and Summer Breeze. We departed Maggie on 15th September at 07:20 in light SE winds and motor-sailed to Cape Bowling Green. The wind picked up during the night to 15 knots, gusting 20 at times. When we departed the next morning, we found the ...sea state to be rough with 2m short period swells. With one reef in the main and partial foresail, we bashed our way south hard on the wind to Cape Upstart. It was a relief to anchor up and relax for a couple of days. On Wednesday morning we left for Bona Bay and motor-sailed in little to no wind. The trolling line went out in the hope of catching a nice spotty mackerel. Before long the line went zing, but whatever it was spat the hook before Bob could reel it in. This happened twice more before we finally got one onboard. After a quiet night at Bona Bay we moved across to Cape Gloucester and enjoyed a delicious pork belly lunch at the Eco Resort. We decided we’d move on the following day for Woodwark Bay; not the best decision. We found ourselves again hard on the wind with jib and jigger, bashing into messy seas. We anchored at Woodwark mid-afternoon with not another boat in sight; bliss. On Sunday it was time to move around to Airlie for laundry, re-provisioning, chandlery and to catch up with Geoff on Spirit plus Shayle & Al on Cat Magic. After a busy week, we left Airlie on Saturday, 28th heading for Happy Bay at Long Island. See more

18.01.2022 Gladstone to Great Keppel Island Thursday, 9th to Saturday, 18th July 2020 After a quick stop in Gladstone for some fresh supplies and an excellent meal at the newly opened Flavours Marina restaurant, we set off at 08:15 via the North Channel for pretty Hummocky Island. We motor-sailed with foresail only in 6-8 knots SE and arrived at 14:00 to a blissfully deserted anchorage. The following day we departed Hummocky at 09:50 for an old favourite; Great Keppel Island. Again, ...we motor-sailed with foresail only and arrived at a very busy Fisherman’s Beach at 12:55. After just one night at Fisherman’s we moved around the corner to Leeke’s Beach to shelter from the SE winds. It was a very social week, catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. We were very happy to see that Dot & Shane’s café/bar, Tropical Vibes, was still going and that the burgers were as good as ever. We again enjoyed some great walks, but resisted a swim in the still cool, wintry conditions. With strong winds forecast for mid-week, it was time to start heading towards Island Head Creek. See more

16.01.2022 Dunk Island to Innisfail to Townsville Friday, 16th to Friday, 30th August 2019 The 21 nautical mile sail to Mourilyan Harbour was in overcast, drizzly conditions with lumpy seas. After negotiating the narrow but deep entrance, we anchored beyond the pile moorings in 1.9m of water. There are often a lot of boats in the harbour, so finding space with the right depth can sometimes be tricky. It is also a working port that exports raw sugar and molasses, along with iron ore a...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Burnett Heads to Pancake Creek Thursday 2nd to Wednesday 8th July 2020 We departed Burnett Heads at first light for the long sail to Pancake Creek. The wind was initially 5-6 knots from the south, increasing to 8-9 knots SSE, just enough to keep the foresail filled. Unfortunately, by 10:00, the wind was back down to 5-6 knots, giving us only 1-2 knots apparent. From then on, we mostly motored interspersed with foresail out, foresail in, foresail out, foresail in! We eventuall...y arrived at 16:20, having covered 60 odd nautical miles in just under 10 hours averaging 6.3 knots. We have spent the past several days catching up with friends Graeme & Marlene on AsIf and Russell & Glennis on Lionfish Safari. It has been great to all be together again in the same anchorage. The lighthouse walk is always a highlight, as are sundowners on the beach watching the lovely sunsets. Today we have motored to the outer anchorage ready for our sail towards Gladstone tomorrow. No reef visit just now; too windy and too cold to snorkel. See more

13.01.2022 Bundy Bound Friday, 1st to Tuesday, 12 November We departed Pancake Creek at 06:15 looking forward to a good day's sailing in 10-15 knots from the East, increasing to 15-20 in the afternoon. What we got was wind at 120-160 degrees and rough seas! We motor-sailed with full fore, main and mizzen. By midday the had increased to 18-20 knots, so a reef was put in the main and the foresail partially furled. The entry in our log reads, "*rap, *rap, *rap; hard on the wind, 20-25 k...nots for the last few hours and messy 1.5-2m swells. Very wet decks with constant spray". Thirteen hours later and in the dark, we were very relieved to drop the anchor in the Burnett River. The following afternoon we moved a little upstream to Chalmer Point to enjoy sundowners onboard Chill with fresh prawns and bubbles to celebrate Karen's birthday. On Monday we moved further upstream to Town Reach to be close to the airport. I flew to Brisbane for a few days to celebrate Nick's birthday, whilst Bob stayed with Whoosh. As If arrived the following day, so Bob was in good company. Duet and Lionfish arrived the day I returned, making for a very social time. We were also fortunate to catch up with my brother, sister-in-law and nephew, who had come to see the turtles at Mon Repos. On Thursday we all moved downstream to Burnett Heads to be ready for an early departure to our various destinations in Hervey Bay. We were looking forward to anchoring at Rooney Point, on the northern end of Fraser Island. See more

10.01.2022 Moreton Bay to Bundaberg Monday, 8th June to Wednesday, 1st July 2020 It was a great feeling to throw the dock lines and set sail once again following a three-and-a-half-month hiatus in Raby Bay Marina. The reason for the lengthy stay was for Bob to recover from a shoulder reconstruction which was performed in February. The sailing over the past few weeks has been mostly uneventful; even crossing the Wide Bay Bar was relatively tame. We’ve enjoyed our various stops along the ...way catching up with friends and fellow cruisers in Mooloolaba, the Great Lady Straits/Hervey Bay and Bundaberg. As far as anchorages go, the stand-out has been Double Island Point which used to be notoriously swell-prone. Over the past year the sandbanks have moved to create a sheltered lagoon with enough depth for shallow-drafted vessels and even some keel-boats such as Whoosh. Tomorrow we will depart Burnett Heads for Pancake Creek, from where we will either head out to Lady Musgrave Island or north towards the Keppels. See more

09.01.2022 Family time at Maggie with Emily & Mark Saturday, 31st to Thursday, 5th September 2019 A wonderful five days catching up with Em and Mark at Maggie (photos below). It had been four years since we last saw Em, so it was very special to have some laid-back family time. The weather was perfect; the water warm enough to swim in; plenty of wildlife to see; but the highlight for us was just chilling in the company of these two beautiful people. We miss you guys and hope you continue to have a fantastic time in Aus.

06.01.2022 Snapshot of Pancake Creek Monday, 28th to Thursday, 31st October 2019 Four lazy days of walking the beaches and pootling around the mangroves with Chill.

03.01.2022 Magnetic Island to Dunk Island Tuesday, 6th to Friday, 16th August 2019 What a difference a clean bottom makes; Whoosh whooshed along with full main, mizzen and foresail doing 5.57 knots in 8-15 knots of wind. We had just the one night at Maggie as we were keen to keep heading north. The weather was warm, sunny and calm on Wednesday morning, so we took the opportunity to go to beautiful North East Bay on Great Palm Island. The night was a little rolly, so after a long walk...Continue reading
