16.01.2022 Cancellation of Conference Dear fellow Rotarian, It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that I inform you that the 2020 District Conference in Whyalla will not be held as originally planned.... This has been an extremely difficult decision and was only taken after much discussion by the conference committee. The spread of Covid 19 is a serious event outside of our control. Although cases in SA are low at present it is important that we take containment of the virus in our community seriously. The decision was reached after careful consideration of advice from government and Rotary risk and insurance. The following statement is part of a longer statement from Peter Kaye, Chair of the Zone Insurance & Protection Committee: From a risk management perspective, we should be mindful of the age demographic of our Organisation and consider the welfare of members above any commercial aspects of the things we do, and on this basis, recommend that you consider cancellation of planned Conferences / Rotary events. We believe that it is prudent that all events up to and including the 30th April 2020 are considered as a minimum. The Conference committee will be working to bring some aspects of the conference to you as a virtual conference. Details of this will be a matter of future communication. Refunds of conference payments will be made and you will be notified how this will be done once details have been worked out. I would like to thank all Rotarians for their support of the conference and especially the committee members, the Whyalla community and everyone who has worked on preparation for the event over the last 18 months. To our Sponsors, we thank you, without your support we would not have been able to bring the conference this far. Our apologies for any inconvenience this has caused you. On a personal note, I would just like to commend the Conference team, who for the past eighteen months have worked tirelessly to bring to you the best and last Conference for District 9500. It has been a pleasure working with them.

05.01.2022 SIMEC Cultana Solar Farm(presentation at Conference Cultana Solar Farm will be a large-scale solar farm that will generate up to 280 MW of solar energy on vacant land to the north of the Whyalla Steelworks and contribute to the national electricity grid via the existing Cultana and Whyalla substations. The fully energised, the Cultana Solar Farm is forecast to generate around 600 gigawatt hours of renewable energy per year equivalent to the energy requirements of almost 100...,000 average South Australian homes drawn from 780,000 solar panels across an area 550 times larger than Adelaide Oval. The use of this energy is also forecast to offset 492,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide that would have otherwise been created from traditional energy generation every year. SIMEC is a part of the GFG Alliance, assisting individuals, communities, and businesses to lower energy costs, improve regional and state energy security, and to promote regional development. The Cultana Solar Farm is designed to deliver a range of benefits to the community, grid and environment throughout its life, from construction through to energisation and ongoing operation. It is forecast to create around 650 direct jobs during its construction phase and once the solar farm is energised, it is anticipated there will be approximately 10 ongoing operation and maintenance positions for skilled trades.
