23.01.2022 New paper in Polymer Chemistry! https://pubs.rsc.org//co/articlelanding/2019/py/c9py01162e Congratulations to the joint first authors, Elena from our group and Johannes from the Frey group in Mainz!... The paper describes the preparation of a protein nanoparticle system based on cytochrome c, which was modified with acid-degradable polyethylene glycol. The degradable PEG polymer was developed in the Frey group. It contains vinyl ether moieties distributed in the polyether backbone, which enables particle degradation at slightly acidic pH. pH-Responsive Protein Nanoparticles via Conjugation of Degradable PEG to the Surface of Cytochrome c E. 21.01.2022 Peter was selected to represent the element Roentgenium in the IUPAC Periodic Table of Younger Chemists as part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the IUPAC and the international year of the periodic table in 2019. https://iupac.org/100/pt-of-chemist/ The selection of Roentgenium 111 is particularly exciting since Peter studied chemistry in Würzburg (Germany) where Conrad Röntgen discovered the x-rays.... In 2004, in honour of Röntgen's accomplishments, the IUPAC named the radioactive element 111 after him. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Röntgen_Memorial_Site https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Röntgen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roentgenium #PTChemists #UNSWEngineering #UNSWChemEng #IUPAC100 #IYPT2019

15.01.2022 Chemie-Fonds support for new teaching equipment The master study course Biomedical Chemistry represents a unique link between the traditional fields of chemistry, pharmacy, biology, and medicine. To ensure that the knowledge acquired during the studies can also be applied practically, students learn special techniques in practical laboratory courses and modules. For this, the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie (FCI) supports the purchase of an HPLC instrument with 14000 Euros.... On June 22, the symbolic check was handed over by Dr. Christine von Landenberg (Member of the Chemieverbände Rheinland-Pfalz) on behalf of the FCI to the chemist Prof. Dr. Peter R. Wich. The Assistant Professor for Medical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz had submitted the successful application to the Förderwerk der Chemie. Dr. von Landenberg emphasized the high value of such courses: In our research, we need interdisciplinary approaches and solutions. And the industry is looking for such trained experts.

15.01.2022 Our latest research just got accepted as article in Biomacromolecules. Great work Benjamin and Ira, congrats!! The paper describes the synthesis of an acid-degradable micellar nanoparticle system. It is the first reported fully polysaccharide-based amphiphile that is degradable and forms nanoparticles. Amphiphilic Polysaccharide Block Copolymers for pH-responsive Micellar Nanoparticles... B. Breitenbach, I. Schmid, P. R. Wich Biomacromolecules 2017, ASAP http://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.biomac.7b00771 Abstract: A full polysaccharide amphiphilic block copolymer was prepared from end group-functionalized dextrans using copper mediated azide-alkyne click chemistry. Sufficient modification of the reducing end in both blocks was achieved by microwave-enhanced reductive amination in a borate-buffer/methanol solvent system. The combination of a hydrophilic dextran block with a hydrophobic acetalated dextran block results in an amphiphilic structure that turns water-soluble upon acid treatment. The material has a low CMC and self-assembles in water to spherical micellar nanoparticles. The formed nanoparticles have a narrow size distribution below 70 nm in diameter and disassemble in slightly acidic conditions. The amphiphilic polysaccharide system shows low toxicity and can stabilize the hydrophobic model drug curcumin in aqueous solutions over extended time periods.
