25.01.2022 Sweet Snowy Mountains & Sweet South Island....... Hope everyone is doing OK and props to all in Victoria after the rotten, long winter lockdown there. Time for a bit of an update on some MTB tour and guiding things.... My 'Sweet South Island Singletrack' tour to NZ, originally scheduled for this month, had to be moved to early February and, with the tour fully booked, fingers crossed the Trans Tasman travel bubble will be in place by then. Once we know that bubble is in place then we'll launch a second SSIS tour for early May. Closer to home, over summer I'll be offering some MTB guiding in the Snowy Mountains, which is home for 2020-21. So whether you want to explore some of the trails for a day or head into the backcountry for some overnight touring do get in touch [email protected] Stay well and see you on the trails cheers Huw

25.01.2022 Submissions on the detailed proposal for the Monaro rail trail from near Canberra to Bombala closes 5pm tomorrow, 28 Feb. If you're keen to see an off-road route to the Snowies then make sure you put in a submission, however short or long. https://yoursaysnowymonaro.com.au/monaro-rail-trail

24.01.2022 Pedalling a Book....... Hope that you're all doing OK in this most peculiar of times although there will be many suffering uncertainty with work and more. I thought I might give a little plug to my 2017 book 'Mediterranean - A year around a charmed and troubled sea'. ... To encourage more people to stay at home, curled up with a good book, the price is temporarily dropped from $35 to $25. 'Mediterranean' tells the story of my year-long circumnavigation of the Mediterranean Sea by sea kayak, foot, ocean rowboat and bike. A journey that started and finished at Anzac Cove, traversing 13,000km through 17 countries and raising more than $100,000 for Save the Children. It's a story of adventures across the land and seascapes of the Mediterranean countries of Europe and North Africa. But above all it's a story of humanity and the power of human kindness in a region torn by economic malaise and increasing conflict. You can read some reviews and order from https://www.huwkingston.com/shop/. For orders delivered elsewhere in Australia, it's a flat $10 by courier. Stay safe.

23.01.2022 The saddest of days.......Vale Steve Evans Last night we lost a legend of a man, a great friend and stalwart of the Southern Highlands MTB community. Steve passed away in his sleep last night of cause unknown. ... Ever helpful, I will never forget his friendship, his humour and his assistance at so many of our events, a real key member of the Dark Side. Thoughts and love are with Maizy Evans,Verity and Karen Evans and all his family. Some words from Maizy below. Legend.

21.01.2022 Been bitten by a Redback? One of our favourite races in one of the best places to ride in Australia is the Redback stage race in Alice Springs. 4 days of racing, riding then relaxing back at a single base. Good friends Rapid Ascent have been running this event for yonks and have announced that the 2020 version from 20-23 August will go ahead. So if you fancy some winter sun in Central Australia check out all the details here.... www.TheRedback.com.au

20.01.2022 Often times if there is nothing to say then it is best to say nothing. At others there is so much to say that it seems hard to know what to say. At others again there is so much being said already that one wonders whether to add to the noise. And finally, when things move fast, is there a point in saying something when circumstances move beyond it so quickly? I don't know about you but for me all of the above seem to apply. These are confusing and challenging times the like o...f which I doubt any of us have experienced ever before. Beautiful countries like Italy, where we have run MTB tours for some years, are already seeing the peak of this disaster. For others, like us here in Oz, we're in the initial phases of the curve and having our lives changed accordingly and rapidly. The rest of 2020 is going to be challenging and uncertain in many ways on many levels for many of you - socially, financially and workwise. And of course for those whose lives were already far less than ideal - those in poverty, in ill health, refugees and others - life can only become harder again. They still need our assistance. During the bushfire crisis that impacted our little corner of the globe just weeks ago, it seemed nearly all messages were signed off 'Stay safe.' Stay safe. Stay well. Stay strong. Go ride a bike.

20.01.2022 It's the early bird that gets the ride....... Great news that our Sweet South Island Singletrack tour in November is now fully booked. 15.01.2022 A reminder of earlier times yesterday - of trunk calls, branch lines and running out of coins

11.01.2022 Pretty bloody nice.......

09.01.2022 Trail Ales....... Saturday, a catch up at Stromlo in Canberra with some of the Biking the Boot Italy tour regulars. Followed by an ale at The Handle Bar. Sunday a ride at Welby in the Highlands with some of the folk booked on The Sweet South Island Singletrack NZ tour. Followed by an ale at Eden Brewery.... Plenty to keep us occupied in Oz but looking forward to international travel again.

08.01.2022 Hoping you're coping in this very difficult time and thoughts are with the no doubt many of our outdoor and cycling community who have been stood down or laid off while Covid-19 dominates our lives. Wanted to share an initiative, Bits by Bike, started up here in Bundanoon, as a few people have asked about it and it's certainly something that could be replicated in other places. It supports our local businesses to get supplies out to those in our community self-isolating or un...able, for reasons of age/infirmity, to get out. And pedalling a delivery bike certainly keeps the fitness up! Massive thanks to Alex McNee, long time Wild Horizons Dark Sider, for providing the Yuba cargo bike to kick the initiative off with.

06.01.2022 Only 3 riders in the 2020 Highland Fling on the traditional 2nd Sunday of November. But possibly the best day of 2020, the best result of any race. Narcissists Corner rather apt......

05.01.2022 Looking forward to some fun in Derby and St Helens

04.01.2022 2020 Sweet South Island Singletrack launch! It's been a most weird few months but we know that for many of you the bike has been a big part of staying fit and staying sane. Both Oz and NZ have done well in combating the spread of Covid-19 and we're all very happy that restrictions are now being lifted in both countries. It's going to be great to get away on the bike again, to ride and to support the regions in Oz and NZ.... With confidence that trans Tasman travel will overwhelmingly likely to be allowed by November we're excited to announce details and bookings are now go for the 2020 edition of Sweet South Island Singletrack on 15 to 22 November. https://www.adventuresouth.co.nz//Sweet-South-Island-Singl. This time we go on a mountain biking journey from Nelson to Christchurch for one hell of a week’s mountain biking with some of the best Kiwi singletrack and touring on offer. We’ll warm up on the trails around Nelson for a couple of days before riding two absolute classic overnight tours. Two days and one night on the Heaphy Track and then three days and two nights on the incomparable Old Ghost Road. After all that enjoyment and exertion, we head to Hanmer Springs for some hot spring rejuvenation (and more singletrack of course!) before the tour finishes in Christchurch. I'm leading this tour in conjunction with Adventure South NZ, a very well-known and respected NZ operator with a passion for mountain biking, headed up by an old friend of Wild Horizons. Hope you might join the fun.

03.01.2022 During the lockdown period I reduced the price of my Mediterranean book from $35 to $25. Only 3 days to go to the end of June before it goes back to full price. You can order here https://www.huwkingston.com//mediterranean-a-year-around-/
