08.01.2022 ‘Relocation’ doesn’t work for possums. Nine times out of ten, it kills them. They either die from predatory vulnerability - due to having no home to hide in; on... the roads - while meandering about lost; hunger/no shelter - having intruded on the already resident possums of an area who will chase them off with a vengeance to protect their own life-sources; and lastly, but definitely not least they die from the stress caused by all the trauma they have been put through. Possums die from stress. An easier, humane solution for so called ‘pest’ possums is to prevent them entering faulty roof/wall cavities (fix them) and provide them with alternative nest sites in the surrounding area: eg. nest boxes. And grow enough native plants to be shared by all We have to develop some tolerance, possums are not the usurpers- we are. ~Rheya Linden. (Possum Wars/Animal Advocate) Photograph M. Uzzell.
