25.01.2022 Peter, Noisy and Ben (Fledgling Peewee/Mudlark, Metallic Starling, and Spotted Turtle Dove)

25.01.2022 PLEASE SHARE ------THURSDAY 29th OCTOBER 2PM UPDATE: BIRD has been surrendered by a Cairns male and female persons and is currently undergoing a health check at... a local vet.------- Help me get back to my parents! We have a fledgling Rufous Owl that is being kept illegally in the Cairns region that we need to secure so it can be checked over by a vet and reunited with its parents immediately. It was taken from a breeding site we are familiar with in the Mareeba Shire (Far North Queensland - a short drive from Cairns). The Rufous Owl is Australia's second largest owl species, and a ferocious predator. However, when their young fledge, they may spend up to 24 hours a few metres off the ground, or on the ground, before making their way back up to the safety of a tree. Unfortunately, we have a very concerning situation for this bird after a call came in for identification at a local wildlife rescue hotline, but the caller had no intention of taking it to specialist carer and is not a wildlife carer themselves. The hotline unfortunately did not take down key information which may help us locate the bird apart from a phone number. We have no address for where this bird is being kept apart from "Cairns". A local raptor carer has touched base with this person via phone to be told the following: - She saw the chick with its parents but took the bird anyway (Rufous Owl adults are highly aggressive and will protect their chicks at all costs, how did this person get this chick without injury to themselves or the adult birds?) - She has no intention of handing over the bird, and claims she will raise it herself until its too big or can fly This bird is being kept in less than ideal conditions by someone with no knowledge of the species (was originally thought to be a Frogmouth). This person has then hung up on the carer and is now not returning calls. We have made contact with local police, who are also having their calls ignored by this person. Now we are reaching a 4th possibly 5th day in which this person has had this Rufous Owl chick. In our experience this chick was probably in 100% health, but as each day passes we are fearing for the worst. If you live in the Cairns region and have seen any suspicious activity, or you are friends with this person, please get in touch with us ASAP. The life of an innocent Rufous Owl is at stake. 24.01.2022 A garden for my Lucky

23.01.2022 This is Andrew! Agile wallaby joey. Has been in care a few weeks. 120g at rescue. Now 161g!

22.01.2022 Im honestly shocked its alive and hatching. After being uncovered accidentally 'months ago', by a farmer digging a sand pile to fix his driveway. I was given this egg. I brought it home, candled it, saw no movement, it sat in the container to be disposed of. Then the egg 'split', thought nothing of it as its dried leather feeling anyway, there was a mouth near the split. Then it flicked its tongue, and opened its eyes. Im shocked beyond words. I don't know anything abou...t them, how they hatch etc. His yolk sac is evident so i hope he survives. He is a Yellow spotted monitor. ** background info in the comments, of how the egg came into my care.

20.01.2022 Avoid feeding cows milk to orphaned wildlife! Wildlife rehabilitators carefully choose replacement formulas specific to the species presented. For example,... even voles, rats and mice have differing nutritional requirements. Sadly, well meaning finders may wish to feed orphaned wildlife as soon as possible; feeding inappropriate foods or using unsuitable methods that risk aspiration. Cows milk is a big culprit, unfortunately causing issues such as diarrhoea or bloat, often fatal in such young animals. If you do come across an orphaned animal, seek help from a wildlife rehabilitator or veterinary practice as soon as possible. Ensure the baby is truly orphaned before intervention. Keep the baby secure, warm, and if you have suitable equipment and feel confident to do so, you may offer a small amount of water. However, if you are unsure please avoid this until a rehabber can take the baby! Have you ever come across an orphaned rodent or other wild animal? I have many babies handed to me each year to raise and care for, but I have never found one in need myself! I always say the finders must be very observant to spot the poor tiny rodents!

18.01.2022 Rara wanted in the shower too. She clucked at me, i opened the door to tell her its ok, she jumped right on in.

18.01.2022 This is Rara! She is a red-legged Pademelon, and as sweet as they come. She loves to race around the yard too.

16.01.2022 Turns out the flying fox we rescued yesterday was a girl. When we woke this morning we saw something in her mouth that scared us initially, thinking she had flesh torn off. It was actually a placenta, with the umbilical cord, attached to her brand new baby! She had given birth overnight. The photo is a bit gory, so it's on the comments if you wish to look. Two lives saved!

16.01.2022 Im a little Pademelon, small and cute. Here is my piggy nose. Here is my little tail. Its 5am, wheres my BOTTLE!?... FEED ME NOW, OR ILL SCRATCH YOUR EYEBALLS!

13.01.2022 I picked up little Lucky pigeon this afternoon. He is a Rock Pigeon, and he was huuuungry!! Fed, warm and content.

11.01.2022 With 7 different bird species, 2 different macropod species and 1 Reptile in care, things are getting hectic! Here is a quick (jokes: its long) rundown of the day! We have: 1 Masked Lapwing, Specks (insects and egg mix, fed every 2-3hrs in aviary)... 1 Yellow Honeyeater, Honey (fruir, nectar, insects and egg mix, fed every 2-3hrs in aviary) 1 Spotted Turtle dove, Ben (seeds and grain mix, forages in aviary) 1 Peewee/Magpie-Lark, Peter (insects and egg mix, fed every 2-3hrs in aviary, though he's hungry every 5min according to him) 1 Rock Pigeon, Russell (seeds and grains, forages in aviary) 1 Metallic Starling, Noisy (whatever you shove in his beak, usually fruit, insects and egg mix, fed every 2-3hrs in aviary) 2 Peaceful doves, Eenie meenie and Miney mo (handrearing granivore, fed every 1-2hrs) 4 Agile Wallaby joeys, Chewie, Cari, Joelene and Donovan (2 bottles of milk a day, plenty of fresh grass, Rhodes hay, Kangaroo pellets and sweet potato as a treat, with the exception of Chewie, who has 5) 1 Red Legged Pademelon, Rara (Aurora) (2 bottles of milk a day, as well as roo pellets, rainforest browse, fresh grass, Rhodes hay, and sweet potato as a treat) and of course Eggy, the Yellow-Spotted Monitor (Goanna) (nothing! Just water, he will catch his own food once released) **Stay Tuned for more photos, and with luck of sunshine tomorrow, the release of Eggy**

10.01.2022 Just like that little Eggy is free. Im so incredibly lucky to have had this experience, and im so happy he made it to release.

10.01.2022 How do you examine an echidna for injuries? Very carefully This beautiful girl came into care last night after a car strike. No obvious injuries luckily. Echidnas don't have a typical pouch, it's just a skin fold made by manipulating stomach muscles. When they don't have an egg, or young, they don't make the pouch, meaning it's virtually impossible to tell male from female. This girl has a pouch, meaning she has young. I could not find an egg, or baby within the area she was found, therefore i believe she has a young in a burrow. After monitoring last night and today, she will be returned to the spot she was found, they use scent trails and markers to find their way back to the burrow.

08.01.2022 Joelene got into an arguement with sticky beak grass apparently

08.01.2022 One happy Echidna released. One happy wildlife carer. Zero bandaids required.

08.01.2022 Eggy has hatched!!! *just hatched Yellow-Spotted Monitor*

05.01.2022 I have to somehow remove her from here, to release her tonight. Wish me luck, and send bandaids!!

04.01.2022 Wallaby pretzel This is various parts of Donovan and Joelene

04.01.2022 This is Joelene. She was found beside her very injured, but alive mum, after a car strike. Mum didn't make it, and Joelene was touch and go, having been thrown from the pouch, suffering injuries herself. A fantastic carer brought her back to health, and she was passed to me, originally as a friend for my Lucky, but now her and Donovan have bonded.

03.01.2022 Eenie Meanie, and Miney Mo They are SMIGEONS (small pigeons). *just hatched Peaceful Doves.

01.01.2022 Have you ever wanted to help our native wildlife, but are unsure how? There is a very simple thing you can do. If you find a wallaby hit on the road, you can check the pouch for live young (they can live for days, before dying of exposure or starvation). Did you know if you don't have time to stop you can simply text me the location of any wallabies that have been recently hit, and i will check for you. ... You can save a life like Donovan here. We found him in his mums pouch. When we checked, all we saw were his bright eyes looking up at us. You CAN help! Call or Text 0447 970 668

01.01.2022 Did you know we rescue bats also? We have a vaccinated carer on hand to assist. If you find a bat hanging on barbed wire like this endangered Spectacled Flying Fox was, gently cover with an old towel or cloth and contact us to assist, do not touch it. This guy will go to a specialised bat hospital to recover from wing injuries.
