25.01.2022 Snake proofing your yard? Snakes will follow boundaries around the home for the most part. It is common to see them slithering along walls, fences and garden beds. Because of this, it is sometimes possible to create a snake proof barrier around your property that the snake can follow away from your home without entering your yard. However, sometimes they will still find their way in, and your snake proof fence traps them in your yard, or as seen in the photo, the wrong size w...ire is used and the snakes can slip straight through. This Eastern Brown Snake became trapped in some wire and lashed out wildly at the 2 dogs in the yard. When snakes are cornered, they will defend themselves. WILD Snake Catchers 0414 089 920

21.01.2022 Very well deserved!

21.01.2022 A great moment we managed to capture while photographing this Rough Scaled Python. They have very long teeth on account of their bird prey and will readily bite if provoked (and sometimes just because!) Now that's WILD!

21.01.2022 Our power is currently down due to a massive wind storm that has just swept across Sydney. We have back up heating in place for the turtles. Wish us luck and stay safe! This photo was taken a few KM from us in East Hills.

18.01.2022 FRESH FROM THE FIELD. With DBCA and Bunuba rangers, I have been studying crocs at Danggu NP (Geikie Gorge) close to 10 years now, and for the first time saw the... impact of cane toads today. Australian freshwater crocodiles can die from eating or even just mouthing invasive Cane Toads (Rhinella marina). The next few years will tell us how the population confront and adjust in the presence of a new threat compared to the last decade. This is why standardized, long-term monitoring programs are crucial to understand changes in populations over time. For those who don’t know much about the toads, there is no practical and realistic way to control these impacts at a landscape level, yet. See more

17.01.2022 People are captivated by tales giant #snakes Most people think that truly enormous snakes are confined to a bygone era. Surprisingly, however, giant snakes remain relatively common in some places. In the last four years, five people have been killed and eaten on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi alone. The #reticulatedpython in the picture was captured in Central Kalimantan. We measured it at just over 7 metres and it weighed > 100kg (it was gravid). We have weighed another ...reticulated Python in southern Sumatra that weighed > 100kg. These are stunning and impressive animals with a power unmatched by any other snake. Daniel Natusch

16.01.2022 It looks like a Moray Eel poking out of a cave for dinner, but it's actually the chrysalis of the Giant Wood Moth. Witchetty grubs bore into the timber of Eucalyptus trees and form the cocoon before emerging some time later as a huge moth with a wingspan of about 25cm. Here's a few we found today and a couple of images off the web for moth sizes. Now that's WILD!

15.01.2022 This poor Blue Tongue Lizard was attacked by a resident that thought it was a snake. She's lost the use of her back legs and likely has internal injuries judging by the amount of blood and fluids leaking from her cloaca and wounds. She is with the vet now so will hopefully pull through. If you need assistance with a suspected snake on your property, call a professional.... WILD Snake Catchers 0414 089 920

12.01.2022 On Steve Irwin day, it's important to reflect on everything he stood for. Conservation, wild experience and enthusiasm for the world around us. It was wonderful to spend a short visit with the beautiful family he left behind and strange to have met them without him. He inspired a generation of wildlife warriors and shone light on Australia in a way that none have achieved since.

07.01.2022 How sad is this photo? We often cut animals free of litter and rubbish, including netting, cans, plastic and a range of strings and threads. 04.01.2022 Galápagos Conservancy Today marks the 9th anniversary of the death of Lonesome George, the world’s last known Pinta Island Giant Tortoise. Last year, a flicker of hope emerged when Galápagos Conservancy, along with Parque Nacional Galápagos, discovered a young female with a partial genome of this extinct species on Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island. She is presumed to be a direct descendant of a pure Pinta Island Giant Tortoise, one that *may* still inhabit part of the volcano.... Though our plans to return to Wolf Volcano were canceled due to restrictions implemented during the pandemic, we are continuing to work on next steps to locate additional tortoises with Pinta Island genes. According to the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species, 187 out of the world’s 360 living tortoise, turtle, and terrapin species are threatened, endangered, or critically endangered. With more than half facing the threat of extinction, they likely represent the most rapidly disappearing group of animals in the world. The earliest known turtle fossils are from the Triassic Period, some 220 million years ago, but human activity over the last few centuries, including habitat destruction, invasive species, and hunting, has triggered a rapid population decline across the world for these modern dinosaurs. Galápagos Conservancy will continue the fight to protect endangered Giant Tortoises and Sea Turtles in the Islands, and we are grateful to all individuals, organizations, and governments working to do the same in their corners of the world. 1: Lonesome George, by Tim Saxe 2: Female tortoise with Pinta Island Giant Tortoise genes, by Diego Bermeo
