15.01.2022 June 3 is Mabo Day a day we remember Eddie Koiki Mabo and his successful fight to end the lie of ‘terra nullius’ (land belonging to no one). The Mabo case fou...ght the legal concept that Australia and the Torres Strait Islands were not owned by Indigenous peoples because they did not ‘use’ the land in ways Europeans believed constituted some kind of legal possession. The case was heard over ten years and on 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have rights to the land rights that existed before the British arrived and can still exist today. The Mabo decision was a turning point for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights, because it acknowledged their unique connection with the land. It also led to the Australian Parliament passing the Native Title Act in 1993. Sadly, Eddie Mabo never found out the result of his legal case. He died in January 1992, just five months before the High Court made its decision. In 2015, Sydney Observatory honoured his legacy by naming a star ‘Koiki’.
