21.01.2022 A personal post today We are a family owned and operated business, which means a lot of our personal time, money and most of all love forms the basis of our business. One year ago today almost 1/2 of our immediate family were involved in a terrible accident. Being a small family business, the medical, financial and emotional effects were considerable. We were extremely lucky to not only have family and friends surround us, but we had the support of our fantastic customers.... Today we look back and appreciate that, together, we got through that difficult time, and now, together, we can grasp and enjoy what life has to offer.

03.01.2022 ! ! As we welcome the arrival of this very much needed rain, grass starts to respond with terrific tasty young shoots, and the horses are in heaven. BUT in a lot of areas, this means an abundance of buffel, setaria, green panic and other high oxalate grasses. And this .. to horses .. can mean Big Trouble. ? When a horse ingests grasses with too many oxalates, they bind to calcium in the gut to form calcium oxalate. This prevents the hors...e from absorbing calcium and causes a calcium deficiency. The decrease in calcium causes secondary hyperparathyroidism, when the parathyroid gland releases excessive amounts of the parathyroid hormone to aid in calcium absorption. If oxalates are preventing absorption from the gut, the hormone will then dissolve existing calcium from the bones to release into the blood stream to help support healthy muscle and heart function. The bones become weakened and brittle, and fibrous tissue then replaces the bone. In the facial bones, this appears as swelling, which gives this condition its name. Supplement feeding Lucerne Hay or Lucerne Chaff is a great way to prevent Big Head in horses as it is high in both Calcium and Magnesium. If your horse is already showing signs of Big Head, it is advisable to lock them away from high oxalate pastures, and feed them a low oxalate grass, such as Rhodes grass, with added supplements including Calcium and Magnesium, again, Lucerne Hay or Lucerne Chaff are a great low cost option. ** .
