25.01.2022 According to genealogical studies approx 4 million living Australians have a convict ancestor. Are you one of them?
24.01.2022 Most people who have spent time working on their genealogy have at least one line that seems to be at a complete dead end - known as a "brick wall" - they need help breaking it down. For the first 5 people to like our page, share this post and comment below, we will, free of charge for our initial inquiry, see if your brick wall is something we can break through!
24.01.2022 Though it’s pretty cool to be able to claim you’re a descendant of William the Conqueror or Charlemagne, the fact is, for most with English or European heritage, there’s a strong chance they, too, can trace back to Will or Charlie. I trace to both rulers myself, and I still think it’s awesome, even if it’s not all that unique! Partial credit SC Perkins
21.01.2022 Surnamesi.e., last namesdid not come into use until around the 11th Century in Europe. There are four general groups of surnames: those based on occupation (like Baker or Weaver), those based on place names or geographical features (such as Goodland or Hill), names coming from nicknames or appearance (like Brown or Little), and those that are patronymic, meaning based upon the father’s name (such as McAndrew, meaning son of Andrew). 20.01.2022 Prior to the opening of the Gresswell Sanatorium, patients with TB, many of whom were returning WWI soldiers, were housed in tents erected on the slopes of Gresswell Hill. The Gresswell Sanatorium for males was built in 1929 but due to funding shortages, was not opened until 1933. It was surrounded by 52 hectares of Crown land as a buffer for the surrounding hospitals and housing. Initially it had 48 beds in 2 wards.
18.01.2022 Going back eight generations, most people will have a whopping 256 ancestors. This is called an outbred family tree. Charles Habsburg, however, known as Charles II of Spain (16611700), was so inbred he had only 29 ancestors, and he suffered from great physical disabilities as a result.
18.01.2022 During the decades of transportation between England and Australia about 60 convicts were Romani Gypsies. Among them was James Squire, who arrived on the First Fleet in 1788 and went on to become the colony's first brewer. Not a bad drop too might I add I am lucky enough to have some Gypsies in my ancestry - such a rich and diverse culture.

Jack was three at the time of the Fitzpatrick incident, he was five when his 1/2 brothers Ned and Dan Kelly died in 1880. In his early 20s he rode as a jockey in local race meetings.
