22.01.2022 Lest We Forget The streets of our city will be quiet on ANZAC Day this year. Unable to gather, we will each find our own way to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of so many Australians who served, and continue to serve our country.... We had the honour of working on the Kokoda Memorial Terrace at the start of the 1000 Steps in the Dandenong Ranges National Park. The memorial was built to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Isurava, a significant battle fought by Australians along the Kokoda Track in World War II. It was a privilege to talk to some of the veterans of the 39th Battalion and bring their personal stories to life. The experience will stay with us forever. Here is one of those stories from 39th Battalion Staff Sergeant, James Picken Cowey MC. Staff Sergeant of 'A' Company, Jim Cowey, was born in Brunswick Victoria. He was raised as part of a pioneering family at "The Patch", just 10 kilometres south of this location. At the time of the Kokoda battles, he was already 52 years old and a decorated World War I veteran who was wounded at Gallipoli. He is believed to be the only enlisted man to have fought at both Gallipoli and Kokoda. In 1940, Jim volunteered to join the militia and was attached to the 39th Battalion. He initially trained the boys in the use of the Lewis Gun on which he was an expert. A crack shot and experienced bushman, Jim was a constant steadying influence to the often callow youths in his battalion. During the Second Battle of Kokoda, for example, he stayed behind at dusk - after the rest of the company had retreated - to rescue a small gun group who'd been left behind. With grenades still exploding in gun-pits and the enemy still thrusting bayonets under huts, Jim told the group, "We'll walk out - they don't know who we are. And with that, he calmly arranged them in single file in the dark, walked them through the enemy line, across a bridge and the airstrip and into dense scrub to safety. Such was Cowey's grace under pressure, his comrades regarded him as a "born soldier" and claimed that "he fought in Papua almost like he'd been there before". He went on to fight at the Battles of lsurava and Eora Creek before finally being evacuated.
