25.01.2022 our dear Sihing, Tony Psaila has kindly allowed us to share this: I wish to apologise for taking this long to post anything. Like all of you I am still shell shocked and trying to come to terms with the passing of our Sigung. Many beautiful and wonderful things have been written about this amazing man. All of them true and all of them I am sure you'll agree an impossible understatement and description of what he truly meant to us. Words will never be adequate. The thi...ngs I have read have brought tears to my eyes as they transport me back into Sigung's presence and allow me to relive all those wonderful moments again. Thank you everyone. As I think back on the things he shared it became apparent that Sigung wasn't just the king of Sil Lum Tao. He was a king in spirit, in nature and character. Why do I say this , why do I know it too be true. He had a servant's heart and had the interests of his subjects (his students and anyone who sought his advice and wisdom) foremost. He shared in an unselfish manner but one tempered with wisdom and discernment. He sought to live peacefully and encouraged unity within the wing chun community and the martial community at large. He never sought his own glory only the welfare of those who came under his jurisdiction. He understood the responsibility of his office and never abused it. He performed the duties of his office with humility and no complaint. He was happy to be in the presence of those who inhabited his world and "kingdom". He empathized with and shared in the joys and sorrows of his student and allowed them to share in his. He loved them all and they mattered. Sigung is at rest and as sad as his absence is and will continue to be for a long time, I (as we all are) have been the most fortunate of citizens for we have been loved and cared for by a man who truly deserved the title of king. Thank you for everything Sigung. we are the most fortunate of students

22.01.2022 FLOOD CLEAN-UP How is everyone going after the big flood? Hope you are all ok. I will be at Pulp Fiction Murwillumbah (training venue) after 10am today (Sunday) to get started on the clean up. The water went over the floor upstairs by two feet. Everything is covered in mud. Our dear sister Jan has lost everything she owns downstairs.... Angela from the shop upstairs had floodwater up to three feet through her home as well. A double whammy, home and business. She is still trapped in floodwaters there but is safe. If anyone is able to come and help out at Pulp Fiction that would be wonderful. Bring gumboots, gloves, any brooms/mops etc. Prepare to get covered in mud! If anyone has some spare household items for Jan please let Ondine or Richard know. She will need everything! Bed, kitchen appliance etc. Take care out there everyone, stay safe.

16.01.2022 Yim Wing Chun meets her future teacher, Ng Mui, the originator of Wing Chun kung fu. Ng Mui was a Buddhist nun, martial arts master, and one of the Five Elders ...who fled the Qing destruction of the Southern Shaolin temple. She went into the mountains of Yunnan, and inspired by seeing a crane fight a fox, or by other accounts a snake, she devised a style of fighting a larger and stronger opponent. From her refuge at the White Crane Temple (thus this style is also known as White Crane kung fu) she often came down to a tofu shop where Yim Wing Chun worked. The legend says that Wing Chun confided in Ng Mui about a warlord or bandit who was trying to force her to marry him. So Ng Mui taught her, and only her, her new martial arts style. After intense training, Yim Wing Chun was able to fight off her persecutor by challenging him to a one-on-one fight -- and winning it. She later married a man of her choice, and taught the style to him. Then he to his nephew, and that man to his nephew, and so it passed in large part out of its female origination. (I looked at some videos on youtube which showed very few women, although i know some who practice it, as others still do.) More in Comments. See more

08.01.2022 The training hall in HK has been adapting to changes without Sifu's presence. As mentioned, it is becoming more and more a sharing hub. While it is appreciated,... it can also easily lose its attraction if learners gradually find no concrete benefits out from it. This seems particularly true to overseas learners who make great efforts in travelling to this remote site and thus very justified to expect something. Those who have come in the recent months might have more or less experienced it. This can actually be improved by better communciation before you set out to come here. Just send us an email or a message telling us your plan, so that, after a quick dialogue, we can help you nail down a realistic arrangement for practising here. You might decide to be with us just for a day, or a whole week, or even longer. During your training we can point you to those related to your concerns, instead of relying on chance. In short, let's together make your stay the most possibly fruitful! See more

06.01.2022 Inspirations from Master Chu’s Poem The Broad, Deep, Pinnacle and Power Aspects of Wing Chun. By Ma Kee Fai. The Wing Chun way is broad and deep... Persistent pursuit can keep your core fit Once techniques reach the true and utmost pinnacle Power roars like river and sea, day and night The poem above was authored by Sifu in mid-nineties, as a piece of his genuine calligraphy for keeping, upon the request by a senior fellow brother who was going to emigrate and establish his own martial art school overseas. Sifu pondered for just a while and brushed the four entences right away. I was impressed by his quick mind and wit creativity in an instant. With hindsight I got to understand that the poem actually sprang out from Sifu’s appreciation of Wing Chun accumulated throughout the decades of years. It has in fact embedded his long journey during the decades, and should not be something casually regarded as ad hoc. The longer I have practised Wing Chun, the deeper I can comprehend the essence of every sentence of the poem. Hereunder I would like to share with you my guess on such essence. The Wing Chun way is broad and deep. Why is it broad as well as deep? It is commonly known that the contents of Wing Chun are much simpler than those of other kinds of martial arts. As such, what does broad refer to? Broad refers to sophistication. Sifu requires us to train up good control and articulation of all joints, ligaments and bones of the body. Sometimes they are to be set to rotate separately in different, even opposite, directions. In this way there are many parts of the body that need to be managed. Moreover, all this has to be further accorded with the mind and the consciousness. It is that sophisticated! This is an aspect of broad. The other aspect of broad relates to its scope of usage. Wing Chun is not confined to just combat. It is equally applicable in our everyday life. For instance it is extremely beneficial to enhancing our bodily quality. Other benefits are numerous and it is not possible to exhaust the list here. What is meant by deep then? It may be denoting stages. As far as techniques are concerned, the progress of acquiring them must be in stages. All of us would have had the following experience: At different times Sifu speaks the same words to guide our training. The time span might be half a year, or one whole year, or even longer. Yet every time such guidance does bring about progress or deeper understanding. The same words still take their effects at different times an indication of the operation of stages. Another example: There was a time when I had had some understanding on the stance. At that point Sifu told me that there was no need to make the stance stable. When I had figured out why it was good without demanding the stance to be stable, he told me further that Wing Chun did not need a stance at all. From building up to applying, to integrating, to being shapeless and formless, each level signifies a better manifestation than the previous one the progression along levels is clear and lucid. Sifu once said that ever since he learned Wing Chun, even after passing through numerous stages of progress, he had not created anything new. What he has done is just to uncover the undiscovered content of Wing Chun. The depth of Wing Chun is indeed unimaginable. Once techniques reach the true and utmost pinnacle. How to locate the pinnacle? I do not opine that Sifu has already reached the pinnacle. I believe that Sifu will agree with me. Below is an incident that can substantiate my opinion. About 10 years ago, in an occasion sharing Wing Chun with the practitioners in Foshan, Sifu demonstrated how to fight back when being constrained in various unfavourable situations. His demonstrations urged the audience to reassess the latent power resided in Wing Chun. There was a question from the audience: Is this the pinnacle reached? Sifu replied that the current position could be no doubt escalated to the next level after further serious training. I guess at that moment Sifu thought that there would still be room for improvement for any level already achieved. Facts are the best proof. Sifu’s level today has transcended many, many times since then. I suppose that in his mind there is no such thing as pinnacle. Instead, it is appropriate to describe it by quoting a proverb: There is no best, but just better. Power roars like river and sea, day and night. In this last sentence of the poem I would like to talk about the word power. This is my real experience in person: In my practice of Sticking Hands with Sifu, once in contact with his hands, I felt that whenever I wanted to exert force to fight back, Sifu appeared to me as a great wall in the front. I just could not move it no matter how hard I had tried. On the other hand, when I tried to recede instead, it seemed that I had fallen into a massive net, being hindered in all directions. In this way, I could neither fight back, nor step back could only remain vulnerable to be captured. This is really the situation described as being overwhelmed by power. In appearance, Sifu had just deployed the usual moves. Yet the result was the unceasing and invincible power. A deep experience in it would certainly be deemed unforgettable lifelong. The above is my thinking inspired by Sifu’s poem. Do you have other thoughts, all my fellow brothers and sisters?
