11.01.2022 Faces of Wingate Introducing Matthew Hi my name is Matthew and I’ve been friends with Wingate Avenue Community Centre for a few years now... I arrived in Australia in 1981 and shortly after got my first job as a tram conductor with Yarra Trams. I was one of the first Vietnamese people to be employed by Yarra Trams and was employed with them for 36 years. When I was about to retire, I saw some people getting on my tram who had some lovely fresh produce. I asked where they got it from and they told me about food relief at Wingate Avenue Community Centre and how to get there. I thought to myself, this may come in useful when I retire, and I’ve been coming to Wingate Ave weekly since my retirement in 2017. I enjoyed coming to the Friday Food Bank distribution because community members help to give out the food and everyone is very orderly, and we are able to chat and catch up with people we know. I have also been part of the men’s group at Wingate and the Monday evening bread night with Matthew. It’s been wonderful to meet so many new people in the community and staff at the centre over the years. I have supported the Vietnamese community in Flemington with translating and interpreting over the years as I am able to speak fluent Vietnamese, French and English. I even lectured in literature and Asia Pacific issues in the 60’s. I have appreciated all of the opportunities that I have been able to pursue in Australia. Wartime Vietnam was very hard, living hand to mouth. I have been able to raise my children here and give them a good life. Let’s all keep up the masks and following the social distancing and soon we will be back to normal.

03.01.2022 Lockdown has been tough, for everyone. For people living on their own, being away from our family and friends has been a real challenge. That’s why single people, and single parents with... kids aged under 18, may now choose one person who can come and visit them at home. Case numbers are going down but there’s still work to do. If we can be patient for a little while longer, all of us will be able to see our loved ones again very soon. For translated information, visit coronavirus.vic.gov.au/ translations

02.01.2022 Friendship in the time of COVID-19 Cindy and Lido share a love of the old Beijing, moving the body, and great conversation. Cindy studied English at Wingate Ave and Lido came to get advice on a parking fine through the legal service; unfortunately, she had to pay the fine but fortunately discovered the community centre.... Cindy and Lido met during COVID restrictions this year, through the centre’s Zoom women’s group. They could tell from looking at each other they had Chinese heritage and were eager to learn more. Lido learned that Cindy was from Beijing and thought ‘Wow, this is common ground’. Cindy grew up in the ancient city of Beijing and Lido’s son is currently living there. They exchanged phone numbers and the following week went for a socially distanced walk with the sun on their faces and the wind rustling in the trees. The picture they both paint of ancient Beijing sounds full of mystery and wonder. In the 1980’s Lido was working for a Swiss company that was managing a project based in Beijing. During that time China was closed to foreigners and it was very hard to get a visa. Lido loves the history and feels very lucky to have visited during that time, soaking up the culture from the Ming dynasty to the Forbidden City. During her visit in the 80’s she vividly remembers everyone wearing a uniform. One for winter and one for summer, colours of blue, green and grey. Cindy loves the history of Beijing, the home of her childhood. Later in life Cindy worked at the Bank of China and would cycle every morning through the Hutong (little alleys) and would pass the old city and big trees, a little piece of her heart will always be there. Cindy and Lido are very excited about the easing of restrictions and have made plans to catch up, becoming firm friends. Amid the challenges of COVID-19 it is beautiful to know that friendship blossom and the sharing of our lives continues.
