21.01.2022 Florabunda Pocket Working Bee Saturday 05 December 7am How's this for a healthy looking creek? We're standing on what I call The Florabunda Rock Bar, which is not known for it's music but the beaut little lake it has captured upstream of it. Beaut native vegetation naturally occuring there too, and it's this that we have been working on with a regeneration program of removal of camphor laurels and other woody and otherwise weeds. Mostly we get to see the edges of the patch of... native forest up near the rugby ovals where we've done lots of more serious planting and restoration because it was nearly all weeds. Great photo thanks Debbie. If you'd like to know more, or even join in with the fun and satisfaction, we'll be there again this Saturday from 7am. We'll be mostly controlling weeds, but we'll have some plants to establish down near the creek. Areas requiring attention include topography suitable for all capabilities. Access to site is down Laidlaw Rd Woombye, turn right through the big wire mesh gates just above the Gymnastics club gate and follow that road out towards the back rugby oval. You'll see us assembling there. If you want to help with the restoration, come in bush protective clothing including boots/shoes and a hat. We'll have all the tools necessary but bringing your own virus free ones is also good. Then we'll finish that work for the year about 9am and celebrate with a xmas cuppa. If you wish to join in that please bring your own mug and water bottle. Thanks all for a great year so far (with a few difficulties) and looking forward to seeing you there. on Saturday -- Regards, Norm Morwood BCSC Coordinator. Woombye [email protected]

21.01.2022 Thank-you so much for your support throughout 2020. On the back of our 40 year celebrations, we started the year winning the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award for Community Organisation. We humbly accepted this honour on behalf of the 40,000+ cats and dogs (and a few goats, snakes, donkeys and chickens along the way) that have been rescued and rehomed since we started operating in 1979!! An incredible 30,000 of those rescued came from the Sunshine Coast Council Pound - wher...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Cr Winston Johnston Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council Renewable energy facility opens ... DID you know council is now converting waste to electricity at its Caloundra Renewable Energy Facility? As the Service Excellence Portfolio Councillor, I was proud to officially open this facility, along with Cr Rick Baberowski, Cr Joe Natoli, staff from council’s waste team and LMS Energy. This facility is now linked to the power grid and generates 7000 megawatt hours of renewable electricity each year. That’s enough electricity to power 1200 homes, 24 hours a day, seven days a week delivering an innovative, sustainable and cost-effective solution to ratepayers. Road safety boosted Construction will begin in early December (weather and site conditions permitting) to upgrade three sections of Glenview Road at Glenview. All going to plan they will be finished by April next year. The project has received funding from the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program and will deliver a significant improvement for safe travel on this road. Section 1 will include footpath and road shoulder work at the S-bend approximately 500m east of Stevens Road and will include a new footpath, retaining wall, fencing and drainage works. Sections 2 and 3 will include new road edge guideposts, hazard signage, minor tree removal and digital warning signage to advise users of upcoming curves in the road. Recycling tips National Recycling Week was recently held here are five simple steps to help you recycle right: keep it clean, empty of food, drink and other contents keep it simple, bottles and containers only when it comes to plastics keep it safe for our workers and people sorting your recycling size does matter (nothing smaller than the size of a yogurt pot) keep rethinking about reusing, reducing and avoiding waste. 07.01.2022 How to spot and remove Dutchman’s pipe: It has reddish-purple pipe-shaped flowers that grow up to 10cm wide. The heart-shaped leaves look like those of the native Pearl vine, which is a food source for moth larvae, so it’s important to make sure you can spot the difference so you don't accidently take out or damage the Pearl vine. The green seed pods open into a basket as they dry out which releases seeds that are carried by the wind into the surrounding environment an...d along waterways. To remove Dutchman's pipe, pull or dig out plants making sure to remove all roots. For larger infestations, cut down the vine before it develops seeds (before summer) and dig out roots. Make sure you remove all plant parts because it can spread vegetatively. If you have seen Dutchman's pipe, please contact council on 5475 7272 to speak with a Pest Plant Officer. The Queensland Government Biosecurity Act 2014 requires everyone to take all reasonable and practical steps to minimise the risks associated with invasive plants under their control. This is called a general biosecurity obligation (GBO). Council undertakes Biosecurity programs to help residents manage their biosecurity risks and become compliant with the Biosecurity Act 2014. Council offers a range of services to help with invasive plant management including free weed control hire equipment such as wick wipers, splatter guns, a mobile spray unit (400L) and knapsack kits. 04.01.2022 Division 5 NEWS Dog inspection program OWNING a dog is a great privilege and also a big responsibility. To keep our community safe, there are additional requirements for those who own a regulated dog (declared dangerous dogs, declared menacing dogs and restricted dogs). ... From November 1, Sunshine Coast Council officers will begin an annual inspection program of homes where regulated dogs reside to ensure owners are complying with the necessary conditions. Visit council’s website to learn more. Maleny Showgrounds reminder Whilst on the topic of dogs, unfortunately some dog owners are abusing the privilege of using the Maleny Showgrounds as an off-leash dog area. During recent weeks some irresponsible owners have allowed their dogs to enter the playing fields during games and training. This is extremely dangerous for both dogs and players. In addition, some owners are failing to clean up after their dogs, which is a health and biosecurity risk to other users. There have been disturbing instances of uncontrolled dogs being aggressive and dog excretion being plastered on the padlocks of the buildings at and around the soccer club house. This is extremely disappointing. Please remember these are shared grounds and dog owners must ensure their dogs don’t disturb anyone else using the facility. New walking trail There’s a new trail to explore at the Maleny Community Precinct wetland, accessible off Porters Lane. With more than two kilometres of trails, the network offers an easy walk through the wetlands with the chance to spot dozens of native bird species, frogs and other water-loving wildlife. Visit adventure.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for trail details. Lookout improvements COUNCIL staff have laid new asphalt at Skipper Musk Lookout at Bald Knob to provide improved parking for vehicles and buses. Ground cover will be planted on the embankment slope soon, further enhancing this picturesque spot. 01.01.2022 Have you seen a Dutchman’s pipe? Its exotic purple flowers are an attractive lure for butterflies, but the poisonous leaves of the Dutchman’s pipe invasive vine can be deadly. Dutchman's pipe is an invader of rainforests, riparian areas, roadsides, disturbed areas, bushlands and even plantation crop areas, which is why it is listed as a high priority invasive plant in the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area Biosecurity Plan 2017. The flowers lure in butterflies who lay thei...Continue reading
