25.01.2022 The 25th of November marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It also represents the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. During these 16 days, we ask everyone, both male and female, to unite in addressing the pandemic of violence against women. As Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, we are 32 x more likely to be hospitalised as a result of domestic-family violence than non-Indigenous women. We experience v...iolence at 3.1 x the rate of non-Indigenous women, and we are 11 x more likely to die from a violent assault than non-Indigenous women. Approximately 90% of violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women is NOT reported. As a country and society, we need to come together to address this global pandemic that affects not only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women but all women #AboriginalWomensLivesMatter #16DaysOfActivism #OrangeTheWorld #EndViolenceAgainstWomen Photo courtesy of UN Women

19.01.2022 Check out below last nights episode of the 'The Point' on NITV which had a focus on domestic and family violence and the impact COVID-19 has had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women across Australia. Our Family Violence Support Worker, Charmaigne talks about some of the impact COVID-19 has had on our clients and Aboriginal victims-survivors of domestic and family violence within NSW.

19.01.2022 The increased numbers of domestic and family violence incidents during COVID is now well documented. Specialist women's legal services are often at capacity and can't meet the demand with the current funding amounts. Specialist women's legal services in NSW and Victoria are urgently seeking an extra $5.7 million a year in next Tuesday's federal budget ahead of an expected wave of domestic violence cases. Additional funding would allow the state Women's Legal Services and Wir...ringa Baiya Aboriginal Women's Legal Centre to hire 13 more lawyers, two social workers, a financial counsellor and five more client support staff. The federal government gave $20 million in May to frontline legal services. But in a letter to Attorney-General Christian Porter, the heads of the Women's legal services said when the states and territories divided this money up, specialist services for women didn't receive an appropriate portion. "Significant funds were directed to services that provide representation to predominantly male offenders, perpetrators and respondents in domestic violence related matters". The support the specialist services provide goes far beyond free legal assistance. https://www.smh.com.au//worst-is-yet-to-come-legal-service

08.01.2022 Please see below our COVID-19 (Coronavirus) service update.

08.01.2022 We would like to congratulate our Governing Committee member Helen Brown on her recent achievement of being named the 2020 NSW Volunteer of the Year and Senior Volunteer of the Year for the Upper North Coast region. For those of you who don't know Helen, she is one of those instrumental Elders in our community who goes above and beyond to help where she can and has dedicated her life to making positive change for Aboriginal people. We have been very privileged to have this p...assionate, inspirational and all round phenomenal woman involved in our Centre for many years. We are very proud of your achievement and are pleased your hard work, dedication and commitment has been recognised in the wider community. You are too deadly!

08.01.2022 The LECC has handed down findings from Strike Force Blackford investigating police strip searches of five young people between 2018 and 2019, concluding there w...as no lawful basis for any of these searches. Despite this evidence of wrongdoing, and a recommendation of an apology to one young woman, NSW Police indicate that current strip search practices will continue. RLC firmly believes that the updating of internal police policies and education materials is not sufficient. We need legislative change, along with compensation for the harm caused by this invasive and unlawful practice. If you have been subjected to a strip search within the past 6 years, we want to hear your story. Register here for our class actions investigation with Slater and Gordon Lawyers: bit.ly/ssclassaction Together we can change this unlawful practice.

06.01.2022 CONTENT WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that this post contains images and refers to deceased persons. It also contains reference to child sexual abuse and suicide. We are deeply sadden to hear of the sudden passing of 11 year old Annaliesse Ugle. Annaliesse was sexually abused for 6 years and took her own life this week after her abuser was let free on bail. Once again, another victim of violence and abuse has been let down by the Australia... justice system, the same system that is designed to serve and protect it's citizens. Everyone has a right to be and feel safe and to live a life free of violence and abuse. It's about time our laws reflected this and stopped protecting these abusers. We send our deepest condolences to Annaliese's family and community
