24.01.2022 And here is the new Wisdom Through Wood workshop. Not quite ready for courses yet as you can see, but a good start. I resisted the shape for months, marking different workshop footprints on the ground thinking that an octagon would be inefficient for work flow. However the circular shape makes very good use of this small forest clearing. And circular constructions are beautiful.

23.01.2022 All set for day one of our chair course. Workshop looks good and some chair inspiration on the bench. #windsorchair #traditionalwoodworking #woodworkingcourse #tasmanianmade #wisdomthroughwood

18.01.2022 Sadly, the Elves of Cologne didn’t finish our new workshop while I had a holiday, so this was a busy week finishing the ring beam around the posts and framing some walls for bracing. We also tried out an idea for a reciprocal roof to grace our workspace. Thank you so much to Ash and James @hammeredandscrewed for your help this week, and to @himmyhammyhornpipes and @jessamin.holden for testing out the rafters. . #Wisdomthroughwood #newworkshop #postandbeam #neika #helpfromfriends

14.01.2022 Morning routines. We’ve all got them. I’m currently into making our coffee with the storm kettle. It runs on all the whispy shavings from the pole lathe and a handful of bigger bits from the draw knife. Perfect.

10.01.2022 Pademelon got soul. Everything’s going be alright. . #pademelon #madeintasmania #wisdomthroughwood

09.01.2022 This is the last view I had of the reciprocating rafters with sky in the background. The roof now has its first layer on. Just canvas stretched over the rafters at this stage. I’m hoping this provides enough protection from the elements to get through winter. So today is the start of the first chair course in the new workshop. I think it will take a little while to fit out properly, but it’s satisfying to start to feel out the space and how it works. The second picture is a quick snap from this morning just before the students arrived. To me it looks surprisingly calm and ordered considering I was still on the roof fixing down the canvas at 5.00pm yesterday. #newworkshops #wisdomthroughwood #reciprocalroof #greenwoodworking #windsorchairclass

06.01.2022 Straight bits and bent bits. All from the one tree. This one had an unusually sweet floral aroma. What a joy. #windsorchair #windsorchairclass #silverwattle #woodworking #wisdomthroughwood

04.01.2022 Because the new workshop is not quite ready for courses, we have been working in a small clearing in the forest next to the workshop. This is the first afternoon of the first course earlier this year. The wood that we were turning came from a tree that fell over in a winter storm about 50 metres from the pole lathes. It’s a rare treat to work like this in the forest that yields the materials for your creations.

03.01.2022 Signs of busyness all around the workshop today. #greenwoodworking #wisdomthroughwood #oldtools #windsorchairs #windsorchaircourse #traditionalwoodwork

02.01.2022 Final tuning on our limb wood Captains chair. Also known as a smokers bow, this is a well recognised Windsor arm chair. Often the arm bow is steam bent from straight grained wood. In this case we are using the bend in a limb to determine the curve and leaving it with a natural finish. (There is still bark on the outside of the bend.) We have slightly changed the overall dimensions of the seat to b sympathetic to the branches curve. . #windsorchair #windsorchairmaking #wisdomthroughwood #tasmanianfurnituredesign

01.01.2022 All together now. Chairs assembled. The Captains Chair looks splendid with a coat of oil and the steam bent crest on the side chair gives it an elegant posture. A job well done by two new chair makers. Thank you for a wonderful course to finish up at Nicholls Rivulet. We have been so lucky over the years to share this space with inspiring people who have included us in their journeys of creativity. . #windsorchair #windsorchairmaking #handmadefurniture #woodworkingcourseintasmania#wisdomthroughwood #oldtools

01.01.2022 Nine days ago Ryan @_rhino_jones_ walked into the forest with me and a crosscut saw to collect wood for a chair. Today we took his finished chair back to that spot. Thanks for a fun course and a splendid job making your first chair. I hope it’s not your last. . #woodworkingcourse #windsorchairs #chairmakers #wisdomthroughwood #tasmanianhandmade
