Tim McCallum, #MEAAEquity member who is involved in the Equity Diversity, People with Disability sub committee is going to sing the national anthem at this years AFL Grand Final. Tim got the guernsey not through the traditional means but rather through a grass roots social media campaign.

24.01.2022 A sad week at the ABC as many talented and respected journalists take redundancies forced by federal budget cuts. We want to say thank you to them all for their excellent work. #MEAAmedia #HandsOffOurABC

23.01.2022 Opera Australia is cutting its incredibly talented and skilled workforce and wants to replace them with insecure, casual jobs. Sign the petition to save these jobs: www.megaphone.org.au/petitions/save-opera-australia #nooperawithoutus

20.01.2022 Happy Trans Awareness Week We see you. We love you. We value you and all the trans artists and creatives working across our performing arts industries. ... Our stages and screens are enriched and deepened by trans visibility and those who are not able to save to reveal their gender identity. Equity Diversity is enriched by our phenomenal trans, gender queer, and nonbinary committee members and co-chairs. Thank you for your creativity, your work, and your activism. If you are looking for a place to build on your activism for improving the safety and well-being of trans people in the performing arts, Equity Diversity may be the place for you and you can get in touch at [email protected] Note that Equity Diversity Committee members are required to be financial members of MEAA, and there are currently fee waivers for members experiencing financial hardship due to Covid19 Image Description: a photo of a billboard in Detroit depicting colour shapes reminiscent of skyscrapers. Text on the billboard reads Trans people are sacred. The sky is a brilliant blue behind the billboard. Billboard art by Jonah Welch.

19.01.2022 The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts is conducting an inquiry into Australias creative and cultural industries and institutions. MEAA will be making a submission to the inquiry, but members are also encouraged to make individual submissions. To assist you making a submission, we have created a simple tool on our website. Submissions close on October 22. meaa.org/make-a-submission-to-the-cultural-and-creative-in/ #LetsGetCreative

19.01.2022 #JulianAssanges extradition hearing is about to begin in London and its important to remember the dramatic global implications to journalism, #pressfreedom, and the legal precedent this will set if he is extradited to the US. If the US can use the Espionage Act to extradite journalists working on foreign soil with impunity this will surely have a chilling affect on journalism and those that seek to reveal war crimes and other state secrets. #MEAAMedia

19.01.2022 What will it take for Paul Fletcher to step in and save Opera Australia? Sign the petition to call on the Minister to take action to save these workers. https://www.megaphone.org.au/petitions/save-opera-australia #nooperawithoutus

18.01.2022 Without JobKeeper and JobSeeker, all of the workers in the Arts and Entertainment industries that have no work right now will be living below the poverty line. Sign the petition calling on the Morrison Government to expand and extend JobKeeper & JobSeeker for all workers and job seekers.

18.01.2022 Opera Australia faces an exodus of patrons and supporters if it goes ahead with unjustified job cuts. #nooperawithoutus

18.01.2022 Members at Opera Australia are still in dispute with management around their agreement and have stood strong in the face of redundancies and attacks on their artistic integrity. We want you to know the union stands with you in this fight. #NoOperaWithoutUs #MEAAequity #MEAAcrew #MEAASOMA

18.01.2022 News media, and the media more broadly, is still very much told from a white, anglo-celtic perspective and needs systematic change to tell stories and report from a Bla(c)k viewpoint that is free to challenge the current narrative of sovereignty and treaty. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek2020 #NAIDOC #alwayswasalwayswillbe

17.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day, and this year its especially important for all of those in the arts, entertainment and media industries. Working in these industries is insecure at the best of times but in 2020 we have also been hit the hardest. Look after yourselves and each other, we can get through this as a community if we do it together.

17.01.2022 Australian Associated Press is an essential service for regional media. It shouldnt have to resort to crowdfunding - the money to keep it alive is already there if the government is truly dedicated to diversity of media. canberratimes.com.au/story/6916094/ #aapneedsyou #MEAAmedia

17.01.2022 The Greens suggest they may pass the proposed legislation if the code is amended to include the ABC and SBS and urged the government to also support the AAP newswire. #MEAAMedia

17.01.2022 Congratulations to Tim Arvier, winner of the Queensland Clarion Awards Journalist of the Year 2020. 16.01.2022 #BREAKING The Victorian Government has today announced an extension of its wage subsidy scheme for public sector venue workers until 28 March 2021. This is a massive win for #MEAAcrew members in Victoria. Our online petition combined with members campaigning on social media shows that when workers come together and take action, it gets results.

16.01.2022 Great news for diversity of media in Australia and for journalists at AAP 2.0 but why did it take Paul Fletcher so long to respond to pleas for funding support from Australian Associated Press? Importantly this now provides certainty to AAP clients to renew and extend contracts with the newswire beyond the end of 2020. #MEAAmedia #aapneedsyou https://www.theguardian.com//aap-given-5m-government-lifel

15.01.2022 We are outraged at Chinas harassment of journalists Bill Birtles of the ABC and Mike Smith of the Australian Financial Review, which has forced them both to return to Australia. This follows the arrest and secret detention of Australian journalist and CGTN news anchor Cheng Lei. The treatment of these Australian journalists, including a midnight police raid on the home of one journalist, is appalling. Chinas continued intimidation and harassment of foreign journalists, inc...luding Australians, represents a dramatic low point for the foreign medias relations with China in almost 50 years." said MEAA Media federal president Marcus Strom. #MEAAMedia #PressFreedom https://www.abc.net.au//australian-reporters-evac/12638786

14.01.2022 "MEAA believes the draft code needs more work. Despite digital disruption, Australia remains one of the most concentrated media markets in the world. This fund cannot be a prop to the falling profits of monopolistic giants that fear the future will undermine their monopoly status. [The code] should also support new and emerging media outlets, who need the most support. Given the escalating decline of Australias regional and rural media sector, we believe special consideration should be given to diverting a healthy proportion of funds to maintaining these invaluable local news providers."

14.01.2022 Rather than axing 40% of its permanent and contract workforce, Opera Australia should be seeking to retain jobs by negotiating an emergency measures agreement with MEAA to jointly manage the financial crisis created by #COVID19. This approach has successfully been adopted at several major performing arts companies, including Sydney Symphony Orchestra. #nooperawithoutus

14.01.2022 How is it that Opera Australia is intent on sacking huge numbers of its employees as well as terminating the contracts of just as many, when there is meant to be money to save these jobs and protect this hugely important, world-class company? Federal Arts Minister Paul Fletcher and his NSW counterpart Don Harwin must step in to assure the company and its workers have a future. Take action: https://www.megaphone.org.au/petitions/save-opera-australia #nooperawithoutus

13.01.2022 "COVID-19 brought the local screen industry to its knees virtually overnight, but with the right policies the Federal Government has an opportunity to create thousands of jobs, support the rebuilding of Australia’s economy and signal a genuine commitment to keeping Australian stories on our screens." #MakeItAustralian

11.01.2022 In part three of this series Dr Crabtree will explore the concept of catastrophic thinking as a cause of anxiety for the creative mind. She will explore the ways in which we can turn musings of the future into what is real in the now, as well as demonstrating tools of how to reduce the severity of anxiety caused by catastrophic thinking.

10.01.2022 What are the experiences of LGBTQIA+ performers? Equity Pride (caucus of Equity Diversity Committee) has set up a survey to canvas LGBTQIA+ experiences of union and non-union members in the industry. The results will inform their work on future campaigns. We urge all LGBTQIA+ performers to take a few minutes to complete the survey. 10.01.2022 After a devastating year for the Australian screen industry, it's good to hear the Federal Government is considering a local content quota for Netflix and other streaming services that currently have no obligation to produce original Australian content. This is something Australian writers, producers, directors, actors and crew have been lobbying for for the last four years. #MakeItAustralian

09.01.2022 Below is an update from two of our stunning Equity Diversity Committee Co-Chairs, Jamila Main and Jono Chan After an intensive day of meetings yesterday (18/09...), Equity Diversity are in the process of finalizing a public statement in response to the issues surrounding the Rob Guest Endowment. Thank you so much to everyone who has generously given us their valuable time, energy, and wisdom on this matter. We will post our statement on our social media channels as soon as it is ready. As always, we stand in solidarity with our First Nations and diverse community. In unity, EDC Co-Chairs The Equity Diversity Committee have been integral in opening communication between the Rob Guest Endowment Board and our BIPOC Members. It has been a huge 3 weeks. I look forward to the official statement from our Equity Diversity Committee on behalf of our BIPOC Equity Members and colleagues in the industry. In the meantime, if anyone would like to take immediate action towards ensuring persons of colour can access financial support for training, please visit the Artists of Colour Initiative and donate whatever you can. It has currently already raised $12,000 towards breaking down the financial and cultural barriers towards training. AOC Initiative

09.01.2022 Victorian Public Sector venues workers need your help. Sign our petition: http://meaa.io/VicVenues We need Dan Andrews to extend financial support for public sector venues workers. We have less than three weeks to get this done.... Theatre and venues workers are relying on this crucial support to make ends meet during the lockdown. It could be months before they return to work. #MEAACrew #NoWorkerLeftBehind

09.01.2022 The QLD #Clarion Awards are tonight! The event will be live streamed here from 7.15pm. The full list of winners and the judges comments will be published once the awards have concluded at: https://www.meaa.org//state-med/queensland-clarion-awards/ #MEAAmedia

08.01.2022 Opera Australia has chosen to sack 25% of its staff leaving it a shell of an opera company. They refused to negotiate with staff, who had already agreed to take pay cuts to help keep the company afloat during this crisis. This includes musicians, singers, costume designers, hair and make up, and all kinds of technical and manufacturing employees. There is another way forward: for the company to genuinely engage with MEAA so we can jointly work on a solution to the current crisis which protects jobs and the reputation of Opera Australia. This approach has been taken by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to secure the future of those companies. #MEAASOMA #MEAACrew #MEAAEquity

07.01.2022 Yet more evidence of the failings of the $250 million arts rescue package. How long do we have to wait to see the jobs promised? Will any of this money end up with small and community arts organisations? https://www.theguardian.com//federal-arts-package-smaller-

06.01.2022 The job cuts at Opera Australia include lighting technicians and all manner of stage crew. How can we have an opera company without these professionals? Sign the petition: www.megaphone.org.au/petitions/save-opera-australia #NoOperaWithoutUs

05.01.2022 Today the Andrews Government in Victoria has announced a $13 million package to sustain Melbournes live music industry through the recession. The NSW government has to stump up money also or Sydneys live music scene will die.

04.01.2022 Workers from Opera Australia staged this musical performance to call on the Minister to save the jobs of over 40% of staff. Sign the petition at www.megaphone.org.au/petitions/save-opera-australia to call on Paul Fletcher to take action to save workers now. The minister has $250 million to help the arts industry that has been decimated by the pandemic and yet not a cent has actually been allocated.... Opera Australia has also signaled it wants to tear up the enterprise agreements which regulate pay and conditions for musicians, choral performers, technicians, stage hands, wigs and wardrobes, props manufacturing and set construction. Thanks to Mark Bruwel, Tutti Oboe in the Opera Australia Orchestra for his this haunting rendition of Ennio Morricones The Mission Main Theme. #MEAASOMA #MEAACrew #MEAAEquity

04.01.2022 MEAA welcomes the new Senate inquiry into Australia's media, and hope it addresses many issues facing the industry including media diversity, the impact of social media platforms, and the decline of regional newspapers. #MEAAmedia www.meaa.org//senate-media-inquiry-must-consider-multiple/

03.01.2022 Can streaming platforms really be trusted to commission and promote Australian content without regulation? Commercial TV networks have shown they cant, and veteran producer John Edwards doesnt think so: "If you let them decide how much they want to make, and they dont get it right, and their shows fail, they wont turn tail and stop making money out of Australian customers - but they will stop investing." #MakeItAustralian

03.01.2022 With a quarter of Opera Australias singers, technicians and orchestra musicians facing the sack, with an Opera House that will be unable to hold opera performances because there just wont be a company able to do it anymore, we ask: what will it take to get the federal and state Arts Ministers to act? said the director of MEAAs Musicians section, Paul Davies.
