18.01.2022 Your care providers are there to serve you and support you, NOT to impose their preferences upon you. Your choices should be respected. Kirsten Small from @birt...hsmalltalk said this recently and I love it! Kirsten is an obstetrician and academic and is on point in her words. Women shouldn’t be doing what their care providers want them to do, care providers should be doing what women want them to do. #birth #midwives #obstetrics #obstetrician #autonomousbirth #birthpower #transformativebirthwork See more

17.01.2022 After 5 years of research in Nepal, today we published the study I set out to do: Resuscitation with the umbilical cord intact. We show that children who do not... breathe at birth will recover better if they are resuscitated in the mother's bed. Read more here: https://doi.org/10.1186/s40748-019-0110-z More than 1,000,000 children die or suffer brain damage due to lack of oxygen after childbirth every year around the world. Our results make me dare to believe that this figure can decrease significantly if you wait to to clamp the cord. Thanks to Nïsha Rana, Ashish KC, Mats Målqvist, Uwe Ewald, Gunilla Stripple, Omkar Basnet and Kerstin Nordén, Lena Nobring and Ann-Cathrin Oskarsson as well as all important team members in Nepal. The SSMF (Swedish Society for Medical Research), the Medical Society's funds and the Little Child's Fund helped with grants. Now we go ahead and study the same thing in Sweden: The SAVE study starts in Malmö on September 30 and hopefully will be started at more hospitals in 2020. Gabriella Aichholzer Hedström did the illustration.

11.01.2022 Last year, a review published in the British Medical Journal showed that universal antenatal screening for the group B strep bacteria may cause more harm than g...ood. The reviewers found that universal screening for group B strep "would have led to overtreatment of 138 583 (99.75%) women in labour." Given that the treatment is giving intravenous (by drip) antibiotics during labour, which have side effects and mean that movement and options are limited, this is an important finding. If you’d like to know more about group B strep and your options, take a look at www.sarawickham.com/gbse That page has details of my book on this topic which helps parents, professionals and others to understand the issues and the evidence relating to the screening and prophylactic measures offered in the hope of preventing early-onset group B strep (EOGBS) disease and it also contains a link to my information hub, where you can read about this study and many others. #midwife #midwifery #doula #birthdoula #pregnant #birth #childbirth #duein2020 #drsarawickham #positivebirth #childbirtheducation #childbirtheducator #whatsrightforme #gbs #gbsexplained #birthoptions #getthefacts #youdoyou See more

09.01.2022 "In low risk pregnancies, routine ultrasonography in the third trimester along with clinically indicated ultrasonography was associated with higher antenatal de...tection of small for gestational age fetuses but not with a reduced incidence of severe adverse perinatal outcomes compared with usual care alone. The findings do not support routine ultrasonography in the third trimester for low risk pregnancies." Henrichs et al (2019) That's the conclusion of the IRIS Study, which looked at whether routine ultrasound in the third trimester was beneficial for healthy women. It's really important to note that, while using ultrasound helped the researchers to find more small for gestational age fetuses, the use of ultrasound didn't mean that the outcomes were improved. There might be lots of reasons for that, but it's important to remember that, in simple terms, just because we can find something (or think we can find something), that doesn't mean we can make it better. Things are often more complex than that, and the very acts of looking, and then offering intervention to treat, carry consequences of their own. The study title is "Effectiveness of routine third trimester ultrasonography to reduce adverse perinatal outcomes in low risk pregnancy (the IRIS study): nationwide, pragmatic, multicentre, stepped wedge cluster randomised trial" and you can find it at https://www.bmj.com/content/367/bmj.l5517 #midwife #midwifery #doula #childbirth #childbirtheducation #childbirtheducation #pregnancy #childbirth #scans #ultrasound #drsarawickham

06.01.2022 An important series of papers relating to the COVID-19 pandemic has been published in the journal Medical Anthropology Quarterly. One of them concerns women's r...ights in childbirth. "Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic ... stories have emerged ... of women having their labor induced, being forced to have cesarean sections, giving birth alone, and being separated from their babies immediately after birth. Current responses to the pandemic in maternal healthcare and the acceptance of these measures on the basis of necessity not only imply serious infringements of human rights but also present a serious risk that the precarious status of women’s rights in childbirth will become the new normal." The paper was authored by Drandi & van Leeuwen (2020) and you can read it in full at http://medanthroquarterly.org//covid-19-a-watershed-momen/ Loads more birth information at www.sarawickham.com #midwife #midwifery #women #womenempowerment #womensrights #birthrights #covidpregnancy #doula #birthdoula #womancentred See more
