25.01.2022 Today is the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and today we partnered with Engender Equality to deliver a 3-hour bystander workshop session in Launceston at the Albert Hall. The workshop session was for community members to explore and discuss what we can each do to contribute to reducing violence against women in our communities. We support the Our Watch campaign that Doing Nothing Does Harm. We all must do something when we see violence a...gainst women. How we help will look different for different people in different contexts - the only wrong thing to do is to do nothing. Our Mentoring Violence Prevention free sessions provide a safe space for people to explore what the options might be, and give people the chance to practice some new ways of responding. Everyone will have a different way of responding and that is okay - we are all different and have different contributions. Would you like to know more and challenge yourself to try a new strategy to address abuse in our communities? https://www.doingnothingdoesharm.org.au/support/
25.01.2022 Do you think hearing other women talk about their experience with the legal system could prepare you in a way a lawyer might not? We do. We’ve created a brand new podcast with Penny Terry from Healthy Tasmania that brings together the stories from women, support services and from lawyers, to help you get the best from the legal system we’ve got. The whole series has JUST LAUNCHED and we’d love you to have a listen and share. Click through to listen now or search for Rule o...f Thumb via your usual podcast app. #WLSTRuleofThumb
24.01.2022 Women's Legal Services Australia believe that the Government's bill to abolish the specialist, stand-alone Family Court would have devastating impacts on families and result in a significant loss of structural, systemic specialisation. Eminent jurist and former Chief Justice, the Hon Elizabeth Evatt AC, said The proposed merger of the Family Court and the Federal Circuit Court (FCC) will lead to undesirable outcomes for children and families. The Family Court was designed ...purposely as a world-leading, specialist, stand-alone Court to deal only with family law matters, with the support of a dedicated multi-disciplinary team of counsellors and mediators. Its stand-alone nature is one its greatest attributes, providing protections for vulnerable people in need of family law assistance, the former Chief Justice said. 19.01.2022 WLST does not support a merger of the Family Court and the Federal Circuit Court. The Family Court is a standalone court to deal with family law matters, keeping women and children safe. It is essential that the Family Court maintains its specialisation. https://www.abc.net.au//family-court-federal-circ/12933874
14.01.2022 The difficulties faced by women as they navigate the family law system has been laid bare in a new series of podcasts by Women’s Legal Service Tasmania in conjunction with Healthy Tasmania. The podcast is called Rule of Thumb and it highlights the challenges woman face when they come into contact with the legal system in Australia. Women’s Legal Service Tasmania devised the production of the podcasts and secured funding through the Commonwealth Government’s Women’s Safety Pac...kage. WLST CEO Yvette says: The challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic brought home the need to find other ways to communicate with people who were restricted from attending legal services or support services. Podcasts have got such huge reach and we wanted to spread the message as widely as we could because we are concerned about the impact COVID-19 has had on many of our clients. People often think the law and legal system is really boring and complicated, but what this podcast does is make it really interesting and much more simple. 02.01.2022 Family violence thrives in darkness. Thank you to our local paper The Examiner Newspaper, Launceston and their journalists for helping to shine light on it. https://www.facebook.com/132603530106114/posts/3920873837945712/?d=n
01.01.2022 While Tasmania is the only state to include emotional and economic abuse within family violence laws, WLST chief executive Yvette Cehtel said coercive control needed to be criminalised more broadly. https://www.examiner.com.au//time-to-change-family-viole/

01.01.2022 The legal profession farewelled soon-to-be-retired Judge Barbara Baker of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia last Friday. Women's Legal Service Tasmania acknowledges the significant contribution Judge Baker has made to family law over many decades, including as a much admired and respected judicial officer over the last 12 years. Judge Baker has been described as an inspiration and role model for female practitioners and someone who dealt with matters before her with co...mpassion, warmth, dignity and fairness. She will be missed across our profession and notably by the people of Tasmania that she has served. Thank you Judge Baker for your significant contribution to women practitioners, the family law and to the families that you have assisted with your clear and decisive decision making.
