24.01.2022 ARV Swim Teacher for Babies, Infants and Preschool Award (Kaali Huddleston) Friday 23 October Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre’s (WSLC) Kaali Huddleston has been recognised as a Finalist at the Aquatic and Recreation Victoria’s (ARV) 2020 Awards in the Swim Teacher for Babies, Infants and Preschool Award category. The 2020 ARV Awards received over 110 nominations in various categories and to be recognised as a Finalist in a competitive field of candidates is a significant... achievement. Kaali has been teaching at WSLC for seven years developing the regions young swimmers to be safe in and around the various lakes and waterways in the Albury Wodonga region. Kaali regularly receives positive feedback from parents and colleagues and has the unique ability to engage children in a fun and educational way improving swimming abilities and progressing children through levels quickly. In 2019, Kaali taught over 650 infant, toddler and preschool classes with 80% of students progressing through multiple levels. Out of the water, Kaali has been instrumental in mentoring new team members and assisting in the implementation of the Bush Nippers last summer. Kaali also played an instrumental role in ensuring the Border’s Mother’s Day Classic could still proceed in 2019. This led to over 551 participants and more than $10,000 raised supporting breast cancer research. Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre’s Head of Swim School, Mandy Sawyer, congratulated Kaali. Kaali should be incredibly proud of this recognition and what she continues to contribute to the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre Swim School program, said Mrs Sawyer. Kaali has been teaching children at the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre for seven years and has been instrumental in developing children to be safe in and around water. This recognition is fantastic timing as we recommence lessons next week ready for summer. Kaali’s fellow Aligned Leisure colleagu

23.01.2022 As we continue to take positive steps towards a return to COVID-normal, outdoor pools across Victoria are preparing to reopen just in time for the Summer months. With a move to the Third Step of the Government’s roadmap made on 16 September, outdoor pools are now permitted to open with strict restrictions in place. At this time, the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre remains closed.... For WAVES, this means the following: Only 50 people allowed in the venue at any one time Entry is only permitted for exercise purposes (lap swimming) There is no recreational swimming, leisure activities, child play or sunbathing permitted General congregation in any areas is not permitted Further information is available at https://www.vic.gov.au/sport-and-exercise-third-step-region What this means for us locally is that while we are allowed to open, we can only have 50 lap swimmers in at a time, so not everyone can enjoy the pool in the way in which we would like. And it means families can’t come down and just jump in for dip when it gets hot. While this latest step has allowed some operators across the State to reopen with minimal impact, our facilities in Wodonga are preparing to reopen in line with the Last Step of the Roadmap in order to provide the community with the greatest level of access. With NSW pools permitted to open without heavy restrictions, the Albury Swim Centre started its season on 21 September, with the Lavington Swim Centre set to return on 6 October. Residents with a valid border permit are able travel within the region to visit these pools, with Albury Wodonga Aquatics Facilities memberships redeemable at both locations. Seasonal Pool Memberships provide simple and affordable outdoor pool access, with prices starting at $8.50 per week for children, $10.65 for adults or $13.30 for families, with concession discounts also available. We also have multi visits passes which are great value for money if you’re interested in regular lap swimming between now and when the Lavington, WAVES and Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre open, starting at $88.80. Visit the Albury Wodonga Aquatic Facilities website to purchase your membership or for more information call (02) 6021 3011. Aligned Leisure and Wodonga Council will continue to provide information on the reopening of local facilities as further information becomes available, with staff working closely with Government Departments and DHHS to support a safe return as soon as possible. Residents are encouraged to follow the Albury Wodonga Aquatic Facilities website and social media pages for the latest information as it is released. Aligned Leisure is also currently working with all Wodonga aquatic user groups on accessing the Albury and Lavington centres. We wish to thank the community for their continued support and look forward to welcoming everyone back with a smile very soon.
