21.01.2022 At the height of COVD-19 restrictions during Holy Week this year, the diocese was unable to hold its annual Chrism Mass. The Chrism Mass takes its name from one of the holy oils which is blessed during the celebration of the Eucharist on the night. At the Chrism Massunique to the cathedral of each diocesewe gather to pray with the bishop and his collaborators, the priests of the diocese, in thanksgiving and praise to God and to pray for them as they renew their commit...ment to the service of God and his priestly people. After consultation with his clergy, Bishop Brian Mascord and the clergy of the diocese will be celebrating the Chrism Mass tomorrow evening (Tuesday 29 September 2020) 6pm at St Francis Xavier Cathedral in Wollongong. Usually there is a large attendance of parishioners from across the diocese, but because of the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, attendance has been restricted to invites only. However, you will be able to watch a livestream of the Chrism Mass on the Lumen Christi Catholic Parishes YouTube channel: http://livemass.lumenchristi.org.au/ #foraallthingsgivethanks #NevertoolateforChrismMass Lumen Christi Catholic Parishes, Wollongong **** THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CHRISM MASS All those who follow Jesus’ call are anointed with the Oil of Catechumens and the Chrism at their Baptism, and again with Chrism at their Confirmation. Those called to serve as priests and bishops are also anointed with the Chrism at their ordinations. Chrism is further used for the anointings pertaining to the dedication of churches and altars. At the Chrism Mass, then, the priestly people gather with the bishop to celebrate the blessing of the Oil of Catechumens and the Chrism with which men and women are brought into God’s priestly people and men are ordained to the priesthood. God’s priestly people are called to a ministry of healing. In the sacrament of healing known as the Anointing of the Sick, oil is again used to anoint the ill and infirm, and so the healing Church gathers at the Chrism Mass as the bishop blesses this Oil of the Sick. Taking holy oils blessed by our chief pastor for sacramental use to each of the parishes in the local church of Wollongong is a sign of our unitybeing in communion with our bishop and with each other. During the Eucharistic Prayer, the bishop invites all to remember the living and the dead. We pray for all the living people in our diocese: young, middle-aged and seniors; for our parishes and schools, and works of service and outreach; for our clergy, our seminarians, religious, teachers, catechists; and for those who are challenged by illness, poverty, or disability. We also pray for the dead: our own deceased relatives, friends and benefactors, all the faithful departed.

20.01.2022 I would like to pay tribute to former NSW Premier John Fahey after the sad news of his death at the age of 75. Just last November, I presented Mr Fahey with the... Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Gregory the Great in recognition of his great service to the Catholic Church, as Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University and to state and federal politics where he promoted a pro-life message on abortion and euthanasia. He was a man of strong faith, devoted to his family and my prayers are with his wife Colleen, his children Matthew and Melanie and grandchildren Campbell and Amber whom John and Colleen raised after the tragic death of their daughter Tiffany in a car accident. He will be sadly missed. May he rest in peace. A state funeral for John Fahey will be held at St Mary's Cathedral on a date to be confirmed. 18.01.2022 Requiescat in pace Fr Donal Madigan OMI. Much loved former parish priest at Mary Immaculate Catholic Parish Eagle Vale. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39).

18.01.2022 Sunday Mass online with Bishop Brian is coming back! You have spoken, and we have listened. Since announcing the cessation of Bishop Brian’s Sunday Mass online from Fairy Meadow, bishop has been inundated with correspondence from all corners of the country thanking him for his online Masses and asking that he continue broadcasting from St John Vianney Co-Cathedral in Fairy Meadow during these uncertain times.... All of us have been truly touched by the outpouring of support, and while we thought we understood the impact we were having, it was not until we finished up and the feedback came in that we had time to reflect on what the Holy Spirit is doing. The amount of support we have received, not just from the Diocese of Wollongong, but also from interstate and increasingly from around the world has been staggering. Our intentional format of engaging you at home as much as possible through the cinematography, music, titles, additional footage and beautiful artwork from our rich Catholic tradition, have all combined to produce a virtual experience that we hope is truly worthy of the source and summit of the Christian lifethe Eucharist. Therefore, the decision has been made that we will continue broadcasting Sunday Mass online from Fairy Meadow! As you can imagine, there is a lot behind the scenes that goes into producing such a product on a weekly basis from our readers, musicians, cathedral staff and volunteers, production management, production crew and post-production, so we will need a couple of weeks to organise the gang and reassign some human resources and budgets in order to see how we can pull this off. However, we are hoping to be online again from Sunday 30 August (22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time) at the usual time of 9:00am. Thank you for reaching out to us and letting us know how much these online Masses have given you comfort during this difficult time, and we are so happy that we can continue being a part of your lives going forward. We are also thankful to those of you who have acknowledged the resources required to produce these online Masses, have donated towards these, or have asked how you can support this ministry. Whilst you are encouraged to financially support your local parish (especially during these times), Bishop Brian also invites you to consider gifting a one-off or ongoing donation to the production of the ministry. If you are passionate about supporting this online Mass ministry, visit https://dow.sh/SundayMassDonate and select Sunday Mass online with Bishop Brian (non-tax deductible) from the drop-down list. We look forward to being with you again soon!

17.01.2022 It's R U OK Day! Arriving at all our schools across the diocese today are packs of CEDoW #RUOKDay postcards, teabags... and delicious homemade cookies ...all lovingly baked and hand-wrapped by our CEDoW staff (a very big thank you to Bernadette Lazarovski and her family!) It's a small reminder that we can all make a difference to those around us even through something as simple as taking time for a cuppa and a chat St Teresa of Calcutta reminds us that we can all do small things with great love. Let us each take a moment to reach out to a colleague, friend or loved one and ask 'R U OK?', listen sincerely, encourage action and continue to check-in. 17.01.2022 NEW CATHEDRAL NATIVITY SCENE INVITES THE COMMUNITY RENEW ITS HOPE AFTER A CHALLENGING 2020 In a year marked by tragedy, isolation and sorrow, the Catholic Church in Wollongong is inviting the community to renew their hope by visiting a brand-new, beautifully constructed nativity scene on the grounds of St Francis Xavier Cathedral from Sunday 28 November. Wollongong Cathedral’s Nativity scene is inspired by a rich tradition dating back to the 13th century, when St Fra...ncis of Assisi created the first nativity set to remind children and adults that true happiness can only be found when we look beyond our material circumstances. The vicar general of the Diocese of Wollongong, Fr Bernard Gordon, says one of the great themes of Advent is the consolation God brings to his peopleespecially in the midst of trials like the COVID-19 pandemic. Advent is a season of hope and fulfilment of long-held expectations, he says. As we prepare to celebrate the arrival of the Infant Jesus, we are reminded that despite the difficulties we face in life, there is a joy freely available to us that transcends our immediate circumstances. The Nativity scene is located outdoors on the Cathedral grounds and will remain open throughout December. A range of COVIDsafe measures will be in place to support the safety and wellbeing of people visiting the scene. Fr Bernard says the beauty of the love shared by Jesus, Mary and Joseph reminds us of the importance of showing love and comfort to others, especially during difficult times. We are inviting everyone to experience this sense of love and comfort by spending some time before the Christmas crib, says Fr Bernard. It’s our hope that people will leave renewed and ready to spread the peace and joy that is at the heart of the Christmas message, and needed more than ever this year. #forallthingsgivethanks Lumen Christi Catholic Parishes, Wollongong
