17.01.2022 Vale - Arthur Ailsworth (Sooty) Morris At the time of his passing, Arthur was the Club's oldest member, aged 94 years & 5 months. Arthur gained his Bronze Medallion in 1943 & embarked on a long & distinguished career as an active lifesaver, competitor, coach & official. Along with good friend & clubmate Ted Burns, Arthur was awarded a SLSA Certificate of Merit for bravery in a major rescue at Coniston Beach in 1950.... He was the ultimate water man, with exceptional skills in swimming, body surfing, surfboard riding, longboard paddling & as a surfboat sweep. Arthur was a multiple Club & Illawarra Branch Champion in a range of events but his greatest success came as a coach/mentor. He was a major influence on the careers of Bob Little, a champion longboard paddler from our Club & to the 8 members of the WCSLSC 1961-62 NSW & Australian Junior R&R Champion Team, commonly referred to as ‘Sooty's Boys’. We have lost a good friend, fine sportsman, valued life member & proud family man whose 5 children all came through the ranks of Surf Life Saving as did his 7 grandchildren. Condolences to Arthur & late wife Rita's children - Darren, Trina, Peter, Craig, Martyn & their families. May he Rest in Peace.
